BlizzCon 2026: Every Announcement and Every Champion

Our BlizzCon 2026 schedule guide could tell you exactly when the Diablo panel started. It could not tell you what got said in it — Blizzard's own words were that any article claiming otherwise before September 12 was guessing. The doors are open now. Diablo V is coming in 2029 to a Sanctuary where the demons already won, StarCraft is becoming an open-world shooter targeting 2030, World of Warcraft is getting a third permanent version of itself in November, and five esports titles were decided on the show floor — including a Hearthstone final that ended 3-1 and an Arena World Championship that came back from 0-2 down to win it.

Our BlizzCon 2026 schedule guide could tell you exactly when the Diablo panel started. It could not tell you what got said in it — Blizzard's own "Know Before You Go" post said in as many words that no name, number or date attached to any of the weekend's "What's Next" panels yet, and any article claiming otherwise before September 12 was guessing. The doors are open now, and the guessing is over.

Here is what actually happened across two days at the Anaheim Convention Center: five new release windows, the first new mainline StarCraft project since Legacy of the Void in 2015, one panel we specifically flagged as unresolved, and five esports championships decided on the show floor.

Two things worth flagging before the detail. First, several of these are genuinely long-lead: Diablo V is more than two years out, the new StarCraft is closer to four. Second, several are not: Season 15, the Battlegrounds Aberrations patch, and the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Diablo IV's Age of Hatred Collection (bundling the base game, Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred) all shipped within days of the announcement, on September 15.

World of Warcraft: a third permanent version of Azeroth

The single biggest reveal for the game's largest playerbase was World of Warcraft: Forever. Blizzard's own framing is specific: it is not a Classic re-release and not a Retail expansion, but "a new, permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW" — a reimagined take on the original 1-60 continents, positioned chronologically after Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core. It ships with a new playable race, the Skyborne, whose starting zone is Zephras Isle, plus new and overhauled zones, additional dungeons, and access included with a standard subscription or Game Time — no separate purchase. Beta opens September 17, the day after this article, and the full launch is November 4, 2026.

The rest of the Worldsoul Saga also got real dates attached to it, not just teasers. Patch 12.2, Eclipse, is the saga's midpoint and puts Xal'atath's storyline front and center — Blizzard's language is that players "will need to confront her directly and stop her from claiming victory." The saga's actual final chapter is now named: The Last Titan, described only as "more than a return to Northrend," with full details promised "early next year" rather than at this show.

Diablo: a war already lost, and what comes after

Diablo got the darkest pitch of the weekend. Diablo V is coming Spring 2029, and its premise inverts the franchise's usual arc: Sanctuary has already fallen, and Diablo has already won. Blizzard's stated question for the game is "what must you become when the world has already fallen?" No subtitle has been given yet, and — accurately — nothing beyond setting and tone has been shown.

Diablo IV, the game people are actually playing right now, got three separate pieces of news. Season 15, "Hell's Legacy," launched September 15 and brings back the three Prime Evils — Baal, Mephisto and Diablo — with players working to reclaim splinters of their souls. A new class, the Amazon, arrives in the first half of 2027: she hails from the island of Skovos (the same region Diablo IV's Lord of Hatred expansion already added), fights across four playstyles Blizzard names as Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger and Commander, and brings a new weapon type, the javelin, alongside a returning bow. And the Age of Hatred Collection — base game plus both expansions, Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred — landed on Nintendo Switch 2 the same day as the new season.

Separately, Blizzard confirmed a Diablo animated series in development with Netflix. No title, no cast, no release window — just confirmation that it exists.

StarCraft becomes an open-world shooter

It is the first new mainline StarCraft project since Legacy of the Void shipped in 2015. Former Far Cry producer Dan Hay took the stage to announce a new StarCraft project that Blizzard describes as "something new, an open world shooter where every step is earned" — not a real-time strategy game. Reporting from Korean media interviews after the reveal adds detail Blizzard didn't put on stage: it is single-player focused, built around a player-created, player-named Marine whose missions tell a linear story with "a beginning, a middle, and an end," with open-world exploration between them. Hay has also said explicitly it is "not a seasonal game."

What shipped at the show was a cinematic, not gameplay. Blizzard is targeting Spring 2030, roughly three and a half years out, and has not shown a single frame of actual gameplay, a platform list, or a protagonist beyond that trailer.

Overwatch: a vampire healer, two reworks and a Cyberpunk crossover

Overwatch used its 10th-anniversary BlizzCon to introduce Doctrine, a vampire-inspired Support hero and ally of Doomfist, whose reveal Blizzard frames as pushing the game's year-long "Reign of Talon" story toward its conclusion. Doctrine was playable in a limited Hero Trial from September 12-14 and officially joins the roster with Season 5 on October 6, 2026 — the same patch that brings major reworks to Sombra (moving out of the Damage role and into Support) and Roadhog, plus a new Escort map, Watchpoint: Grimsvotn.

Further out, Blizzard confirmed an Overwatch x Cyberpunk: Edgerunners crossover landing sometime in 2027, with two characters already locked in: David, from the first Edgerunners season, and Talia, introduced in the upcoming Edgerunners 2. No specific season, date or shop rotation has been attached to it yet.

Hearthstone: the Old Gods return, and a sixth class

Hearthstone's news split into three pieces, each with its own date. The next expansion, Reign of the Black Empire, launches October 20, 2026, bringing ancient Azeroth's four Old Gods into the card pool as legendary neutral minions alongside a new, Old God-themed Assemble keyword. Nine days before that, on September 22 (patch 36.6.1), Hearthstone Battlegrounds adds Aberrations, a corrupted minion type built around discard effects and a new Deity mechanic: each Aberration that dies advances a player toward summoning their randomly assigned Old God, C'Thun or Y'Shaarj. Naga and their associated heroes and cards are being rotated out of Battlegrounds in the same patch.

Longer-term, Hearthstone confirmed its first new class in six years: the Monk, fronted by Chen Stormstout, arriving March 2027.

Warcraft III and Heroes of the Storm get real updates too

Two announcements that would headline a smaller show got a single-panel treatment here. Warcraft III: Reforged shipped a new campaign, Forsaken Kingdom — a prologue plus three story chapters bridging the fall of Lordaeron, built around a new neutral Forsaken Paladin hero unit — available immediately on the Battle.net Shop, alongside a 3.0 update overhauling the game's graphics and revamping the World Editor.

Heroes of the Storm picked up a new hero, Xal'atath — the same character central to World of Warcraft's Eclipse storyline — with a PTR release on September 14 and a full launch on September 28.

The CD Projekt Red panel we flagged as unknown got answered

Our schedule guide singled out one line on the published timetable as the weekend's biggest question mark: "30 Years of Battle.net with Special Guest CD PROJEKT RED," the only session on the schedule to name a non-Blizzard studio, with no description beyond the title. We now know what happened in it, and it's bigger than the Witcher 3 crossover CD PROJEKT RED had already teased in August.

Two announcements came out of that panel. Cyberpunk 2077 and its Phantom Liberty expansion are coming to Battle.net, sold separately or as the Ultimate Edition bundle, sometime later in 2026 with no exact date set yet. And the Geralt-inspired Barbarian skin for Diablo IV — previously announced only as "in development" — was fully revealed: it unlocks for any Battle.net player who pre-purchases The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past (the expansion launching in 2027) or buys it after release. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered itself still launches on Battle.net on September 29, 2026, as originally announced — see who gets the free Witcher 3 upgrade if you already own the base game on another storefront.

Every esports champion crowned this weekend

Away from the announcement stages, BlizzCon 2026 also decided five separate championships. Blizzard's own results are light on set-by-set detail, so scores below are cross-checked against independent match coverage rather than the recap article alone.

TitleChampionResultPrize pool (if published)

WoW Mythic Dungeon International (MDI)Team Liquid (Yipz, Xesevi, Ashine, Boomie, Wolfdisco)Defeated Big Lucky 3-1 in a best-of-five, closing the deciding dungeon in Voidscar Arena with no deaths$300,000 total; $150,000 to first

Blizzard Classic CupTeam TastelessDefeated Team Artosis in the multi-title exhibition spanning StarCraft: Remastered, StarCraft II, Warcraft III: Reforged and Heroes of the Storm$100,000 total

The Overwatch World Cup result carries the most history. South Korea won the tournament's first three editions outright in 2016, 2017 and 2018, then went eight years without a title while the USA (2019) and Saudi Arabia (2023) each won one. This is their fourth World Cup and their first since 2018.

What we could not verify

  • We are not printing an MVP name for the Overwatch World Cup final. One outlet's coverage named a player as MVP; we could not confirm it against a second independent source, so it's left out rather than repeated on one report's authority.
  • We did not find a published head-to-head score for the Blizzard Classic Cup. Blizzard's own recap states only that Team Tasteless defeated Team Artosis; no set score or match breakdown had been published as of this writing.
  • A specific claim that this StarCraft project follows two prior cancelled StarCraft projects appears in some outlets' framing of the reveal. We could not confirm that history against a Blizzard statement, so we have not repeated it here.
  • What Diablo's "Immortal Event" — the longest single block on both days of the published stage schedule — actually consisted of is still not documented anywhere we could find, including in Blizzard's own post-show recap.

Quick Action Checklist

  • If you play WoW: Beta for World of Warcraft: Forever opens September 17; full launch is November 4. Patch 12.2 "Eclipse" and the Last Titan expansion do not have dates yet.
  • If you play Diablo IV: Season 15, "Hell's Legacy," is already live as of September 15. The Amazon class is first half of 2027. The Geralt Barbarian skin requires pre-purchasing or buying Songs of the Past on Battle.net.
  • If you play Overwatch: Doctrine, Sombra's Support-role rework, Roadhog's rework and the new map all land together with Season 5 on October 6.
  • If you play Hearthstone: Battlegrounds' Aberrations arrive September 22 (and Naga leave). Reign of the Black Empire launches October 20. The Monk class is March 2027.
  • Diablo V (2029) and the new StarCraft (2030) are both multi-year waits — nothing shown so far beyond setting, tone and a single cinematic.
  • Esports, in one line: South Korea (Overwatch World Cup), Gators Back (AWC), Team Liquid (MDI), OTGxhh (Hearthstone), Team Tasteless (Classic Cup).
  • Curious about the schedule, the sold-out passes, or what streamed free? Our BlizzCon 2026 schedule and stream guide covers all of that — this article covers what the panels actually said. More convention coverage lives in the Gaming Events archive, and everything else is on the Mythras blog.
