Gen Con 2026 Beyond the Tables: Cardhalla, a Ballpark, and 1,000 Drones
Gen Con 2026 ran 27,467 ticketed events. The ones worth writing about were the ones with no game on the table: a card city built to be demolished for charity, 2,000 people on a baseball field, a 1927 movie palace turned into six floors of D&D, and 1,000 drones over downtown Indianapolis.

At 10 o'clock on Saturday night, Gen Con ran a scheduled event whose entire stated purpose was to let people throw pocket change at a city made of trading cards until the city stopped existing. It has a game code, ZED26ND328885. It has a capacity, 5,000. It costs nothing. It is rated for ages six and up.
That is real Gen Con programming, not a bit somebody did in a hallway — and it is the best way into the part of the show that never makes a coverage roundup: the events that are not a table with a game on it.
We were in Indianapolis for all four days, and this is deliberately not the product report. For what launched and what got announced, see the Gen Con 2026 zoom-out and the full Wizards showing; for badges and wish lists, the practical guide. This one is the card city, the ballpark, the movie palace, the drones and the money — sourced from Gen Con's press releases, the public event database's final Sunday sync, and official venue and publisher pages.
The short version
- Cardhalla has run since 1999. In 2026 it built for three days at the Indiana Convention Center's Georgia Street entrance and was demolished by thrown coins on Saturday night. Free, 5,000 capacity, filed under Isle of Misfit Events.
- Gen Con expanded into Victory Field for the first time. One Victory Field session appears in the public catalog: a 2,000-person Dungeon Crawler Carl meet-up and group photo with Matt Dinniman and Jeff Hays, run by Renegade Game Studios.
- Wizards of the Coast turned the Indiana Repertory Theatre — a 1927 Spanish Baroque movie palace — into a six-floor "D&D Tower."
- A 1,000-drone light show went up over downtown Indianapolis on Saturday night, the first of its kind at the show.
- The money splits between Super Heroines, Etc. and the Immigrant Welcome Center. Gen Con says it has raised nearly half a million dollars for charity since moving to Indianapolis in 2003.
Cardhalla, four days up and one hour down
Cardhalla is a city built out of donated trading cards, on the floor, by whoever wants to help. Gen Con's own charity page dates it to 1999 and gives it a three-word motto: build, donate, destroy.
The 2026 catalog entries are unusually specific for something this informal. Cardhalla Construction was listed three times — Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day — at the ICC's Georgia Street entrance, free, capacity 5,000, ages six and up. Drop in whenever. Fold for other people. Donate cards you no longer want. Help clean up.
The rules are the good part. Fold, stack, cut a card to make a piece fit — but no glue, no tape, no adhesive of any kind. Nothing holds Cardhalla up except friction and the fact that nobody has knocked it over yet, in a convention centre entrance with tens of thousands of people walking past for three days.
It sits under Isle of Misfit Events, Gen Con's 967-session junk drawer for things that are not a game, not a seminar and not a show — a category hiding a surprising amount of the show's best programming.
The teardown is the whole point

Cardhalla Destruction was its own listing: Saturday, 10 p.m. to 11 p.m., same location, free, capacity 5,000. The description lays out the running order — closing ceremonies at 10, an auction for the right to take the first ceremonial throw, general destruction from 10:30. Bring spare change. All of it goes to Gen Con's charity partners.
Sit with the auction detail, because it is the part that tells you Cardhalla is not a novelty. Gen Con sells the privilege of being first to break something strangers spent three days building. The building phase costs nothing and produces nothing you could sell, so the only way three days of effort converts into money is the collapse. The cards are a fundraising instrument that happens to look like a skyline.
One honest limit: Gen Con does not publish per-event charity totals and had not published a 2026 Cardhalla figure when this went up. Any dollar amount you see attached to this year's teardown is somebody's estimate, not a reported number.
Gen Con put 2,000 people on a baseball field

Gen Con's July 28 press release announced the expansion in plain terms: "For the first time, Gen Con will expand into Victory Field, holding both industry and fan-focused events at the ballpark."
Search the public catalog by location and exactly one fan session comes back: Dungeon Crawler Carl Fan Meet-Up & Group Photo, Saturday 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., run by Renegade Game Studios, free, ages 13 and up, capacity 2,000, photo at 1:30 on the turf, Matt Dinniman and Jeff Hays both listed. Cosplay encouraged.
Now the number that makes the case for the ballpark. At the final Sunday sync, that 2,000-seat meet-up still had 100 tickets left. Every other Dinniman event was gone, and several were oversubscribed:
| Dungeon Crawler Carl event | Capacity | Availability at final sync |
|---|---|---|
| Q&A with Matt Dinniman (Thu 4 p.m.) | 300 | -49 |
| Crawler Creation Chaos with Dinniman & Hays (Fri 1 p.m.) | 150 | 0 |
| Dinniman & Hays signing (Thu 1 p.m.) | 125 | -1 |
| Dinniman & Hays signing (Sun 9 a.m.) | 125 | -2 |
| Book signing with Matt Dinniman (Fri 11 a.m.) | 100 | 0 |
| In Hobby: Early Access Showcase (Sat 3 p.m.) | 150 | -4 |
| Fan meet-up, Victory Field (Sat 1 p.m.) | 2,000 | 100 |
Negative numbers mean organisers seated more people than the listing allowed. Every room-sized Dungeon Crawler Carl event overflowed. The only one that did not was held in a baseball stadium, and it was still 95 percent claimed.
That is why the ballpark is on the map now. Gen Con did not add Victory Field for the ambience — it added it because there is no room in the Indiana Convention Center where 2,000 people can stand in one photograph. A book series generating stadium-scale demand at a tabletop convention is genuinely new, and the venue list is the receipt.
Six floors of Dungeons and Dragons in a 1927 movie palace

The building at 140 W Washington Street opened in 1927 as the Indiana Theatre — Rubush and Hunter, Spanish Baroque, 3,200 seats, with the Indiana Roof Ballroom and its fake-sky elliptical dome on top. It joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and the Indiana Repertory Theatre has been its tenant since the 1979-80 remodel.
Wizards of the Coast rented all of it and called it D&D Tower. Per the official D&D Gen Con page:
| Floor | What was on it |
|---|---|
| 1 and 2 | Main Stage — check-in, merch, the keynote, The Twenty-Sided Tavern, the concert, actual play |
| 3 | Dungeon Dare: Web of the Red Wizards |
| 4 | Actual Play Amphitheatre and D&D Talks |
| 5 | Dungeon Master University (Friday and Saturday) |
| 6 | D&D Carnival (Friday and Saturday) |
The catalog backs that up from the other direction: filter the database by that address and you get five separate categories at one venue — Entertainment Events, Roleplaying Game, Seminar, Workshop and Isle of Misfit Events. That is not how a normal off-site venue behaves.
Some of the volume, all from the final sync:
- Dungeon Dare: Web of the Red Wizards ran 36 hourly sessions of 20 players at $8 a seat, handing out pre-generated 3rd-level characters for a single Underdark fight. Almost every slot finished at zero or negative.
- The D&D Carnival ran 20 overlapping two-hour sessions on Friday and Saturday, free, 250 capacity each. The Saturday 2 p.m. slot closed at -55.
- Dungeon Masters Live Play on Saturday night, $14, 540 seats, finished with two tickets left, proceeds to Children's Miracle Network. The Puppy Roll III: LIVE that morning, $12, 540 seats, raised money for animal rescue through Petco Love.
- The D&D Vision Keynote 2027 on Thursday was free, listed at 500 capacity, and closed at -28. We covered the roadmap in the D&D and Baldur's Gate 3 keynote breakdown.
Nine D&D Talks seminars ran alongside all that in 240-seat rooms, and Wizards streamed the Main Stage, D&D Talks and the Actual Play Amphitheatre on its own YouTube channel — the tell that D&D Tower was a broadcast studio that happened to admit an audience. Wizards could have taken a hotel ballroom. It took a landmark with a marquee, where the queue is visible from the street.
A thousand drones over downtown
Gen Con's release lists it flatly among the marquee events: "a 1,000-drone light show over downtown Indy on Saturday at 10 pm hosted by Wizards of the Coast." Public radio station WFYI carried the same figure and time. D&D's own Gen Con page scheduled it at 10:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 1. The two official sources disagree by fifteen minutes and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
It is the only marquee item of the weekend with no capacity number attached, because it is in the sky. No badge, no ticket, no wish list, no two-hour cart window. Anyone standing downtown got the same show as the person who paid $164 for a four-day badge.
And here is the scheduling collision: Cardhalla Destruction was listed 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, coins flying from 10:30. The drone show was 10 p.m. or 10:15 depending on which official page you read. Gen Con's two biggest free spectacles of the weekend were stacked on top of each other, roughly half a mile apart. If that was deliberate — hold the crowd downtown, then hand them somewhere to walk — it is smarter than it looks. If it was an accident, it is the kind of accident that happens when a convention outgrows one building.
Where the money actually goes
Gen Con names two charity partners a year and splits the proceeds of every fundraising programme between them. For 2026: Super Heroines, Etc., which uses fandom to push for equity and representation with programmes aimed at women, underrepresented genders and youth leaders in tabletop, and the Immigrant Welcome Center, an Indianapolis nonprofit founded in 2006 — its 20th anniversary this year — running English and citizenship classes, naturalisation clinics and a Natural Helpers volunteer programme. Both were announced in February, and both get proceeds, promotional marketing and exhibiting space on the floor.
The machinery feeding them is bigger than Cardhalla: the Saturday Charity Auction of items donated by exhibitors and individuals, a separate Collectibles Auction for rare pieces in a glass case near the auction stage, the Consignment Store open to any badge holder with prices dropping through the weekend, and a Blood Drive run with the American Red Cross and the Heinlein Society.
Gen Con's charity page says the show and its attendees have raised "nearly half a million dollars" for Indianapolis and tabletop nonprofits since 2003, and lists every partner back to Rupert's Kids in 2006. Gen Con also partnered with Make-A-Wish this year to grant the wish of a teenager named Eleanor, who attended with her family. None of it comes with a 2026 total attached yet — Gen Con reports charity outcomes after the fact, and slowly.
The block party nobody needs a badge for
The Gen Con Block Party ran on South Street across all four days: an outdoor, open-to-the-public festival with more than 40 local food trucks and eateries, including Sun King Brewery, HotBox Pizza, Daniels' Vineyard, Helm Coffee, Island Noodles and Prime 47. Open to the public is the operative phrase — it is the one part of Gen Con that Indianapolis gets to walk into.
Inside, the 40th Annual Gen Con Costume Contest ran Saturday 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in an 850-seat room that finished 130 people over capacity, plus a 30-seat VIG allocation and a 50-seat kids ticket. The Costume Parade an hour earlier was free with 500 slots. And the Pin Bazaar traded pins each evening in the Capitol Food Court, free, 500 capacity — the listing locates it "near Cardhalla," which tells you Cardhalla is now a landmark people navigate by.
That is the pattern. Gen Con's non-game programming is free or near-free, sized in the hundreds or thousands rather than the sixes and eights of a roleplaying table, and oversubscribed anyway. Out of 27,467 ticketed events in the final catalog, the ones you will still be describing to people in November are mostly in this post.
What we could not confirm
Gen Con had published no official 2026 attendance or economic-impact figure when this went up. The most recent hard numbers are 2025's: nearly 72,000 attendees and an estimated $82 million local economic impact. Gen Con's own release said only "tens of thousands."
No 2026 charity total exists yet, and Gen Con does not break out per-event fundraising, so there is no verified figure for what this year's Cardhalla teardown raised.
The drone show is 10 p.m. in Gen Con's press release and WFYI's preview, and 10:15 p.m. ET on the official D&D Gen Con page. We could not reconcile them.
Only one Victory Field session appears in the public catalog, but Gen Con said the ballpark held "both industry and fan-focused events," and industry programming is not listed in the fan-facing catalog — so the real total is almost certainly higher.
All availability numbers here come from the public event database's final sync of Gen Con's events.csv on Sunday, August 2 at 5:51 p.m. That is a third-party mirror, not a Gen Con report, and negative availability means an organiser seated people beyond the listed capacity rather than an error.
And Gen Con has not said whether Victory Field, the theatre or the drones come back in 2027.

Gen Con 2026: What Actually Happened — A World Debut, an 18+ D&D Setting, and a Flooded Hall
Gen Con hung its sold-out signs the morning before Trade Day opened. Four days later it had given a card game its world debut a year ahead of release, watched D&D shrink-wrap a setting, seen a twenty-six-year-old grail game rebuilt in Middle-earth, and taken a tornado warning that put water through the ceiling of the hall holding most of its card games.

StarCraft Tabletop Miniatures at Gen Con 2026: 640 Free Demo Seats and a Release Date Nobody Agrees On
Archon Studio booked 40 hours of free demo table at Gen Con 2026 for its Blizzard-licensed StarCraft miniatures game — 640 seats, no charge, Hall B. The event database says something surprising about how those seats moved. Here is that data, the real contents of both starter boxes, the rules Archon has actually published, and the four different dates attached to this game shipping.

Pick Up Your Gen Con Badge a Day Early. Seriously.
I lost roughly four hours of Gen Con 2025 standing in a badge line on opening day. In 2026 I arrived a day early and collected it before the show started. Here is the mechanics of why that works: Will Call versus mailed badges, why Wednesday pickup exists, and what else the extra day gets you.

I Learned Six Trading Card Games in One Weekend at Gen Con 2026
Six publishers, one badge, four days, and a stranger with no idea how any of it worked. Pokemon charged $4 for the teach and $26 for the sequel thirty minutes later. Bandai charged nothing and handed me a deck and a promo. WeirdCo sold out a free table for a game that does not hit shelves until November. This is not a ranking. It is what each publisher was willing to spend to get one more person to the table.

Four Days Was Not Enough: Leaving Gen Con Early
I left Gen Con 2026 on Saturday morning for family reasons, with a four-day badge in my pocket and a day and a half of convention still running behind me. Two and a half days held six card games, a painting table and a Commander event — which is exactly why I would buy the four-day badge again without thinking twice.
