Best PUBG LMGs, Ranked

Three LMGs, three different jobs — and a different three from a year ago. The DP-28 left the game in June, the RPD arrived in August, and the M249 has been world loot since 2020, whatever the crate guides say. Ranked on KRAFTON's own numbers, the wiki where KRAFTON is silent, and the Update 43.1 trims, with a December clock on all of it.

KRAFTON's Update 42.3 patch-note art of PUBG's three current light machine guns propped against a workbench: the MG3, the M249 and the new RPD with its wooden stock and drum magazine.

PUBG has three light machine guns, and if the last LMG ranking you read had a DP-28 in it, it was describing a game that no longer exists. The DP-28 went out with the weapon cull KRAFTON announced in the Update 41.2 patch notes and carried out in Update 42.1 in June 2026. The RPD arrived in Update 42.3 in August as the centrepiece of KRAFTON's first Meta Rotation. And the M249, which the previous version of this page called a crate gun, has been world loot since Update 6.3, in 2020.

So this is a fresh ranking, not a touch-up. Three guns, three jobs: the RPD you can plan a loadout around, the M249 you find on the ground if the loot is kind, and the MG3 that only falls out of the sky. We rank on what KRAFTON has published, say plainly where the only figure is a wiki figure, and account for Update 43.1, which trimmed the whole class four weeks into its season. This is PUBG: Battlegrounds on PC and console, which share balance but patch about a week apart; PUBG Mobile is a different game.

Rewritten 12 September 2026. The previous version of this page ranked the M249, DP-28 and MG3 and called the M249 crate-only. Neither survived contact with the patch notes. The roster below is checked against KRAFTON's Update 42.3 and 43.1 notes and the official pubg.com weapons page, which files exactly three LMGs under its ETC tab: M249, MG3 and RPD.

What changed, and why this ranking is new

GunStatus in September 2026Where that comes from
DP-28Gone. Removed from the loot table with the six-weapon cull — announced in Update 41.2, executed in Update 42.1 (June 2026)KRAFTON 41.2 and 42.1 patch notes; the wiki's DP-28 page records "Update 41.2: Removed from the weapon loot table"
RPDNew. Added in Update 42.3 (PC 12 August, console 20 August 2026); "World spawns", "Available on all maps"KRAFTON 42.3 patch notes
M249World loot, not crate. "Removed from Care Packages and added to normal loot" in Update 6.3, as a "semi-rare spawn"; Update 43.1 still treats it as a world spawnWiki update history quoting the 6.3 notes; KRAFTON 43.1 notes ("World spawn rates for the RPD and M249 have been reduced by 30%")
MG3Care-package weapon since Update 8.2; nothing in 42.3 or 43.1 changes thatWiki update history quoting the 8.2 notes; the wiki's Air Drops page lists the MG3, and not the M249, among crate weapons

One more thing changed, and it changes how this post is written. KRAFTON's Meta Rotation Dev Letter published per-shot damage for the RPD (43) and the M249 (41), so two of the three now have official figures. The MG3's 42 is the wiki's number, not KRAFTON's, and it is labelled that way everywhere below.

How we rank LMGs

With three guns, the ladder is short and the criteria matter more than the order. In priority:

  1. Availability. Whether you can plan for the gun at all. World spawn on all maps beats semi-rare world loot beats care package, because a gun you hold once in fifty matches does not shape how you play.
  2. Sustained fire. Magazine size and reload time, the two numbers that define the class. KRAFTON published post-42.3 reload times for the RPD and M249; the MG3's is not published.
  3. Ammo and per-shot damage. Which pool the gun drains, and what each round does — official figures where they exist, wiki figures flagged where they do not.
  4. Handling, as KRAFTON describes it. ADS transition, firing-position bonuses, attachment slots. We do not rank on recoil "feel", because nobody outside KRAFTON has the current numbers.
  5. The 43.1 trims. All three were adjusted on 10 September on PC (17 September on console); the section near the end carries the figures.

The ranking

Read the order as impact across your real matches. The MG3 is third because you cannot plan for it, not because it is weak in the hand; the RPD is first because it is the only one of the three KRAFTON describes as available on all maps.

RPD: the one you can build around

KRAFTON's official reveal render of the RPD light machine gun, showing its wooden foregrip, wooden stock and drum magazine.

The RPD is a 7.62mm, full-auto LMG and the first new one in PUBG in nearly two years, by KRAFTON's own count. Every number here is from the 42.3 patch notes or the Dev Letter: 43 damage, 750 RPM, 735 m/s muzzle velocity, a 5.2-second base reload, and a 50-round magazine that an extended mag takes to 110. It world spawns on all maps.

Why it ranks first is the ammo as much as the availability. 7.62mm is what a DMR or a bolt-action already has you carrying, so an RPD does not open a second supply line the way a 5.56 gun does next to a 7.62 AR — the ammo guide covers how much of the roster that pool feeds. And its reload is the fastest published figure in the class: 5.2 seconds against the M249's 5.962.

The build rules are strict and worth memorising, because two of them take away the slots you would normally use to tame a spray:

  • All AR/LMG magazine attachments and all AR/LMG stock attachments fit.
  • Scopes up to 6x.
  • No foregrip of any kind, and no muzzle attachment — no compensator, no suppressor, no flash hider.

The recoil you get is the recoil the gun shipped with. Put the compensator on your AR and plan the rest of the loadout around a gun you cannot tune.

Since 43.1, on PC: the RPD's firing-position recoil-control bonus is smaller (standing reduced by 10%, crouching by 17%, prone by 27%), its damage multiplier against vehicles went from 1.1x to 1.0x, its ADS transition — like every LMG's — is 0.37 seconds instead of 0.30, and its world spawn rate is down 30%. The base recoil values and patterns, per KRAFTON, "remain unchanged".

M249: the world-loot belt

The official PUBG render of the M249 light machine gun, belt-fed with a 5.56mm ammunition belt visible at the feed tray.

Start with the correction, because it is the one that changes loot decisions: the M249 is not a crate weapon. The Update 6.3 notes, as the wiki's update history records them, read "Removed from Care Packages and added to normal loot on Miramar and Erangel" and call it a "semi-rare spawn". The same update added stock and magazine attachment slots and "reduced standard ammo capacity to 75", with an extended magazine taking it to 150. The 100-round crate M249 that older guides describe is the pre-6.3 gun. The 43.1 notes confirm where it lives today by cutting its world spawn rate — a care-package gun has no world spawn rate to cut.

The published numbers, from the Dev Letter: 5.56mm, 41 damage, 800 RPM, 915 m/s, and a 5.962-second base reload. Against the RPD that is a trade, not a loss — the M249 keeps a small DPS edge (546.7 to 537.5) and a 180 m/s muzzle-velocity advantage, which is what you feel leading a runner across an open field. It drinks 5.56, which is either convenient (you run an M416) or a second supply line (you run a Beryl). Scopes on LMGs top out at 6x, a limit the wiki traces to an early PC update that "restricted big scopes (8x and up)" for the class.

Second, not first, for one reason: KRAFTON calls the RPD available on all maps and has never published anything comparable for the M249 beyond "semi-rare". You will find an M249; you cannot plan on one.

Since 43.1, on PC: recoil-control bonus reduced while crouching (17%) and prone (27%), with no standing figure listed; vehicle multiplier 1.1x to 1.0x; ADS 0.37 seconds; world spawn rate down 30%.

MG3: the crate buzzsaw

The MG3 light machine gun as shown in KRAFTON's Update 8.2 announcement art.

The MG3 has been a care-package weapon since Update 8.2, whose notes — again via the wiki's update history — read "Spawns in Care Packages on all maps". It is 7.62mm, feeds from a 75-round belt with no extended-magazine option listed, and leaves the muzzle at 820 m/s. Its signature is a two-mode fire rate, "660 rpm and 990 rpm", and an attached bipod that deploys automatically when you go prone. The 8.2 notes also gave it tracer rounds and a damage bonus against vehicles, which matters below. Its per-shot damage, 42, is the wiki's figure after the +2 KRAFTON gave it in Update 15.1; it is not a number KRAFTON has restated since.

At 990 RPM the MG3 puts more rounds into a doorway per second than either world-spawn gun, and the bipod is why prone MG3 fire was so flat before 43.1. Two costs: a 75-round belt at 990 RPM is a short belt, and the reload is the one figure in this post with no current source at all — the wiki's 8.2 seconds predates the 25% class-wide cut in 42.3, and KRAFTON has not published the MG3's new time.

Third because a crate is a crate: you fight for it, you do not plan around it. When you do win one, the MG3 is the only LMG that still carries a vehicle damage bonus — reduced in 43.1 from 1.25x to 1.1x, but the RPD and M249 lost theirs entirely.

Since 43.1, on PC: recoil-control bonus reduced while standing (15%) and crouching (17%), with no prone figure listed; vehicle multiplier 1.25x to 1.1x; ADS 0.37 seconds.

What Update 43.1 did to all three

Four weeks after 42.3 made LMGs the Meta Rotation's first featured class, KRAFTON's 43.1 patch notes said it had found LMGs "having a greater impact on the overall gameplay environment than intended" and trimmed them. The class-wide picture:

ChangeRPDM249MG3
ADS transition time0.30 → 0.37 sec0.30 → 0.37 sec0.30 → 0.37 sec
Damage multiplier vs vehicles1.1x → 1.0x1.1x → 1.0x1.25x → 1.1x
Firing-position recoil controlstanding −10%, crouching −17%, prone −27%crouching −17%, prone −27%standing −15%, crouching −17%
World spawn rate−30%−30%n/a (care package)

What did not move: the base recoil values and patterns, which the notes say "remain unchanged", and the 42.3 reload and horizontal-recoil figures, which 43.1 does not mention. The stance figures are cuts to the size of the crouch and prone bonus, not to your recoil; how that lands in absolute terms is not published. The full breakdown, KRAFTON's reasoning and the December clock are in the Meta Rotation write-up.

Two dates. 43.1 reached PC on 10 September 2026; the console maintenance is scheduled for 17 September 2026 (01:00–09:00 UTC), subject to change, so until then console LMGs run the untrimmed 42.3 numbers. And the LMG buffs themselves are scheduled to return to a standard level when Update 44.2 starts the second Meta Rotation in December — which is why this ranking is dated and will be re-run then.

When an LMG beats an AR

Most of the time an AR is in your hands and the LMG is a should I swap decision. An LMG beats an AR when:

  • You are holding a position, not pushing one. Defending a compound, anchoring a building in the final circles, covering an angle your squad has to cross. The magazine makes the space unlivable for longer than any AR can.
  • You are suppressing for a teammate. The point of suppression is that nobody peeks while your squadmate flanks or revives; an AR runs dry mid-suppression and a 110-round RPD does not.
  • You are set up and the fight is static. Braced or prone at mid-range, the LMG's ADS and mobility costs stop mattering and its uptime advantage does — with the 43.1 caveat that crouch and prone now buy less stability than they did in August.
  • You are hosing a vehicle — for the magazine, not for a bonus. The RPD and M249 hit cars at 1.0x since 43.1; only the MG3 keeps a 1.1x multiplier. The sustained fire still helps; the class bonus mostly does not.

An LMG loses to an AR when the fight is mobile: hot drops, building clears, anything where you are moving and reacting and need a fast ADS — and every LMG's ADS just got 0.07 seconds slower. There you want a kitted M416 or AUG every time. The play is rarely "LMG instead of AR"; it is "AR as your primary, LMG as the second gun for the hold-this-position fights", the two-gun thinking in the loadouts guide.

Quick Action Checklist

  • Stop looking for the DP-28 — it left the loot table in Update 42.1; the three LMGs are the RPD, M249 and MG3
  • Build around the RPD if you are already carrying 7.62mm: world spawn on all maps, 50/110 magazine, 5.2-second reload, no foregrip and no muzzle slot
  • Treat the M249 as world loot, not a crate gun — 75/150 magazine since Update 6.3, 5.56mm, the fastest bullet in the class at 915 m/s
  • Take the MG3 when a crate lands, flip to 990 RPM for suppression, and expect the 75-round belt to go fast
  • Remember every LMG's ADS is 0.37 seconds since 43.1 (PC now, console from 17 September) — pre-aim earlier
  • Expect crouch and prone to flatten less LMG recoil than they did in August; the base pattern is unchanged
  • Hose vehicles for the magazine, not a bonus — only the MG3 still has one, at 1.1x
  • Keep an AR as your primary and an LMG as the second gun for holds, and re-check this ranking when Update 44.2 lands in December

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best LMG in PUBG?
Across your real matches, the RPD. It is the only light machine gun KRAFTON describes as a world spawn available on all maps, it uses 7.62mm ammunition shared with DMRs and bolt-action rifles, and its published figures are 43 damage, 750 RPM, 735 m/s and a 5.2-second base reload with a 50-round magazine expandable to 110. The M249 is second: 5.56mm, 41 damage, 800 RPM and 915 m/s per KRAFTON, but semi-rare world loot rather than an all-maps spawn. The MG3 has the fastest fire rate in the class at 990 RPM but is care-package only, so it ranks third on availability, not on power.
Is the M249 a crate weapon in PUBG?
No, and it has not been for years. Update 6.3 removed the M249 from care packages and added it to normal world loot as a semi-rare spawn, reducing its standard magazine to 75 rounds (150 with an extended magazine) and adding stock and magazine attachment slots — the 100-round crate M249 in older guides is the pre-6.3 gun. KRAFTON's Update 43.1 patch notes confirm its current status by cutting the world spawn rates of the RPD and M249 by 30%, and the PUBG Wiki's Air Drops page lists the MG3, not the M249, among care-package weapons.
Was the DP-28 removed from PUBG?
Yes. KRAFTON announced in the Update 41.2 patch notes that six weapons and all related content would be removed from the game, and Update 42.1 carried it out in June 2026. The DP-28 was one of the six, alongside the Mosin Nagant, QBU, PP-19 Bizon, R45 and P1911. The current LMG roster is the RPD, the M249 and the MG3, and the official pubg.com weapons page lists exactly those three.
RPD vs M249 — which is better in PUBG?
They trade, on KRAFTON's published numbers. The RPD hits harder per shot (43 vs 41), reloads faster (5.2 vs 5.962 seconds) and uses 7.62mm. The M249 fires faster (800 vs 750 RPM), holds more (75 rounds default and 150 extended against the RPD's 50 and 110), keeps a small DPS edge (546.7 vs 537.5) and has a much faster bullet (915 vs 735 m/s), which matters at range against moving targets. The deciding factor in practice is availability: the RPD world spawns on all maps, while the M249 is semi-rare world loot. Since Update 43.1 both have a 1.0x vehicle multiplier and both had their spawn rates cut 30%.
Is the MG3 still crate-only in PUBG?
Yes. The MG3 has been a care-package weapon since Update 8.2, whose notes said it spawns in care packages on all maps, and nothing in the Update 42.3 or 43.1 patch notes changes that. It is a 7.62mm LMG with a 75-round belt, no extended-magazine option, two fire-rate modes of 660 and 990 RPM, and a bipod that deploys automatically when prone. Its damage figure of 42 is the PUBG Wiki's, not an official one. Since Update 43.1 it is the only LMG that still carries a vehicle damage bonus, reduced from 1.25x to 1.1x.
Did Update 43.1 nerf LMGs in PUBG?
Partially. KRAFTON's Update 43.1 patch notes increased ADS transition time for all LMGs from 0.30 to 0.37 seconds, reduced the recoil-control benefit of crouching and going prone (by up to 27% for the RPD and M249 prone), cut the vehicle damage multiplier to 1.0x for the RPD and M249 and to 1.1x for the MG3, and reduced RPD and M249 world spawn rates by 30%. The notes state that base recoil values and patterns remain unchanged and do not mention reload times or horizontal recoil. The changes reached PC on 10 September 2026 and are scheduled for console with the 17 September maintenance.
When should I use an LMG instead of an assault rifle in PUBG?
When you are holding a position rather than pushing one — defending a compound, anchoring a building in the final circles, or suppressing an angle so a teammate can flank or revive. The big magazine keeps fire on a space without the reload break an AR forces. Stick with an AR for mobile fights such as hot drops and building clears, where the slower ADS (0.37 seconds for every LMG since Update 43.1) and low mobility get you killed. Vehicles are no longer a special reason to reach for an LMG: since 43.1 only the MG3 keeps a damage bonus against them.
