Tokyo Game Show 2026: What Actually Happened

Our guide to watching Tokyo Game Show 2026 flagged one entry on the official schedule as suspicious: the LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW NEW PROJECT listing was written entirely in the past tense, describing a cosplayer and a replica weapon on a stage that had not happened yet. We guessed it was recycled boilerplate. We were half right — it was recycled copy, but for something the show's own category list had no box for. Dragami Games used the slot to announce an R-rated Lollipop Chainsaw movie, not a game.

That was the fun surprise of TGS 2026. The bigger story arrived two days later: Typhoon Dujuan, tracked by the Japan Meteorological Agency as Typhoon No. 25, forced organiser CESA to cancel the entire in-person program on what was supposed to be the show's fifth and final day — the extra day that made this the first five-day Tokyo Game Show in the event's history. Here is what actually got announced across TGS 2026's four full days at Makuhari Messe, what happened to the day that got cut, and what still went out anyway.

Two of those rows only exist because of the typhoon, not despite it — more on that below.

The typhoon that cancelled day five

TGS 2026 was built to be the biggest edition in the show's 30-year history before anyone had heard of Typhoon No. 25. CESA's own pre-show press release, dated September 10, put the final exhibitor count at 1,138 companies and organisations — 540 from Japan, 598 from overseas — spanning a record 53 countries and regions and 3,999 booths, edging out 2025's 1,136 exhibitors and 47 countries.

Then, on September 19, CESA posted an "Important Notice" citing Typhoon No. 25 (Dujuan): Sunday, September 20 would proceed, "depending on future weather conditions," but Monday, September 21 — a national holiday in Japan, and the fifth day added specifically to make this the longest TGS ever — was cancelled outright. Japan's Meteorological Agency was tracking Dujuan approaching the Kanto-Koshin region with sustained winds near 40 metres per second, and Weathernews and the Japan Times both reported it threatening the same public-transport network TGS attendees rely on to reach Makuhari Messe. CESA's notice put it plainly: winds and rain were "expected to intensify in the afternoon, raising concerns about potential disruptions to public transportation." Refunds went out to everyone holding a September 21 ticket; September 20 tickets were not refunded, because that day's show floor opened as planned.

With the fifth day gone, final in-person attendance across September 17-20 came to 257,642 — 53,630 on the first business day, 52,545 on the second, 78,678 on the first public day (Saturday) and 72,789 on the second (Sunday) — down from 263,101 across all five days in 2025.

What still happened on the cancelled day

Cancelling the show floor didn't mean cancelling the broadcast. CESA's follow-up notice, posted September 20, confirmed it would "stream the 'official program' as scheduled on Monday, the 21st … ensuring safety without requiring in-person attendance." Two sessions from our streaming schedule guide survived the cut: the Street Fighter 6 showmatch Red Bull Revenge and the closing Ending Stage, both broadcast with no audience in the room.

Red Bull Revenge was always the marquee booking for the cancelled day — four invitation-only "grudge match" rematches, each a first-to-5 set, recreating specific historic Street Fighter results rather than random pairings:

Famitsu confirmed the matchups and broadcast time carried over unchanged despite the venue closure — streaming from 10:30 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. JST on YouTube (Red Bull Play) and Twitch (Red Bull Japan), "無観客で実施" (held without spectators). Results were not posted as of this writing; see "What we could not verify" below.

Capcom Spotlight: a Switch 2 push and a second Mega Man

Capcom's pre-recorded showcase aired Wednesday, September 16 — the night before doors opened — and its biggest news wasn't even new that week. A September 10 Capcom investor-relations release, timed to land ahead of the show, had already confirmed Monster Hunter Wilds is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on December 4, 2026, alongside a Resident Evil trio — 2 Deluxe Edition, 3, and 4 Gold Edition — also landing on Switch 2, digitally on October 16, 2026 and on physical media January 29, 2027, timed to the franchise's 30th anniversary.

What the Spotlight itself broke was Mega Man: Dual Override, a Spring 2027 release across PS5, PS4, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. Proto Man joins Mega Man as a second playable lead — Capcom's framing splits them between ranged and close-range playstyles — built around a new "Override" ability. Monster Hunter Wilds also picked up a full expansion, Ascendance, confirmed for 2027 with the returning elder dragon Teostra as its headline monster. Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen got a firm date, October 9, 2026, adding a new area (Forsaken Dominion), twelve new dungeons and a new character creator to the 2024 base game. And Street Fighter 6's Year 4 pass named its second DLC fighter, Arjun, arriving October 13, 2026 with a martial-arts-yoga moveset.

The Xbox broadcast: 17 reveals and a Kojima casting bomb

Xbox's own broadcast ran Thursday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. JST (3 a.m. Pacific, 6 a.m. Eastern, 11 a.m. UK), hosted by Misuzu Araki. Xbox's own recap describes 17 gameplay reveals, announcements, a surprise release and a world premiere, spanning games published through Activision, Bethesda, Kojima Productions, Koei Tecmo and Sega. The headline dates:

• Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — a new campaign trailer, with campaign early access October 16 and full launch October 23, 2026.
• Once Human: Isles of Abyss — an ocean-focused expansion trailer, ship-building and deep-sea survival, dated October 22, 2026.
• Fallout 76: The Slasher — a horror-themed seasonal update, available the day of the broadcast.
• Persona 4 Revival — a character reveal, dated February 18, 2027.
• Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember — new gameplay, dated March 4, 2027.

The broadcast saved its biggest news for the very end. Hideo Kojima appeared to share an update on OD – KNOCK and then revealed the lead cast for PHYSINT: Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård — best known to most audiences as Pennywise in the It films — alongside Charlee Fraser, shown together on a new poster. No character names, release window or platforms came with it.

The Lollipop Chainsaw mystery, resolved

Back to where this started. Our schedule guide caught the tell: the LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW NEW PROJECT entry on TGS's official programme was written in the past tense before the session had happened, describing a cosplayer's reaction and a replica weapon as if reporting on something already over. That recycled-copy red flag turned out to be masking a genre swap, not a typo. Publisher Dragami Games used the Saturday, September 19 slot to announce an R-rated Lollipop Chainsaw movie — a prequel to the game's own story, not an adaptation of it — attaching a five-name production credit list: Joe Teng (Nada Holdings), Robert Franke (Orange Chariot, formerly ZDF Studios), Takafumi Yuki (Throne Inc), Kirk Shaw (Ambitious Entertainment) and Patricio Rabuffetti (Non Stop TV). Dragami president Shohei Sato told Deadline the film is aimed at "fans who have played the game and audiences who are new to the franchise" alike. No release date, cast or director has been announced.

What we could not verify

• Red Bull Revenge's results. All four Street Fighter 6 matches streamed as scheduled on the cancelled day, but no winner had been published for any of the four sets — Big Bird vs. Bonchan, Tokido vs. MenaRD, Blaz vs. Sahara, LeShar vs. Kawano — as of this writing.
• Whether Sunday, September 20 ran its full published schedule unmodified. CESA's own notice warned it might "need to make changes to or cancel certain facilities or activities" that day depending on conditions; we found no follow-up listing specific Sunday changes, so we are not claiming the day ran exactly as originally scheduled.
• A specific character name or setting for PHYSINT. Kojima's reveal named the lead actors and showed a poster; it did not attach a character name, story detail or release window to either.
• Any release date for the Lollipop Chainsaw movie. Confirmed as in development with a five-person production credit; nothing beyond that has been dated.

Quick Action Checklist
