Crimson Desert Romance and Marriage: How Flirting Works
Pearl Abyss spelled out the romance rules in the 2.04.00 launch notes, and three hotfix notices have touched them since. Here is the trust ladder, the one-a-day limit, what flirting as one character costs you with the others, and what a spouse actually does.

Pearl Abyss wrote the romance rules into the launch notes
Until October 29, all anyone had was one sentence. Pearl Abyss's October 20 Features Overview said Kliff, Oongka and Damiane "can form even deeper bonds with some of Pywel's inhabitants" and that trust "may eventually blossom into romance and even marriage." Our DLC unlock requirements guide covers that announcement and the gates for everything else in the expansion. It could not say how any of it works, because nothing was published.
The Patch Notes Version 2.04.00, posted at launch on October 29, 2026 at 22:00 UTC, changed that. They describe a separate, extra layer of trust, a button to raise it, a number that lets you propose, and a list of what a spouse does. Three of the four hotfix notices since then (2.04.02 on October 30, 2.04.03 on October 31 and 2.04.04 on November 1) have fixed or changed pieces of it. I read the launch notes and every hotfix notice on Pearl Abyss's board today, plus the October 20 overview and the Known Issues notice. This guide is built from those, and the "what I could not verify" section lists what they leave out.
I have not played the DLC for this guide, so there is no first-hand tip in here. Where the notes are silent, I say so rather than guess.

The three buttons: Chat, Gift and Flirt
The launch notes changed the NPC interaction menu. Ordinary business now sits under Interact, and two new options, Chat and Gift, sit beside it. Romance is a third button, Flirt, reached from Interact. Per the notes, flirting is how you raise the "additional level of Trust", and once that level reaches 100 you can propose.
| Action | What the notes say it does | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chat | Lets you share your Knowledge with an NPC "and earn their trust" | Knowledge is the research system covered in our knowledge guide |
| Gift | Give items to an NPC; the notes list it among the interactions that raise trust | Since 2.04.03 you can select several items at once and set a quantity for each |
| Interact | Ordinary interactions | The menu where Flirt sits |
| Flirt, then Gift or Chat | Raises the additional level of trust toward 100 | Limited to once a day per type of interaction |
| Propose | Becomes available at additional trust 100 | The notes do not say where the option appears |
Three details in the notes are worth planning around.
- A cooldown is shown. After any interaction that raises trust, the game displays how long until the same interaction can raise trust again, so you do not have to count.
- New books teach preferences. The notes add books "that will help you learn residents' preferences." Pearl Abyss does not name them or say where they are sold. They are the obvious first stop before spending gifts blind.
- The daily limit is per interaction type. The notes say the additional trust "can only be increased once a day for each type of interaction." Read plainly, that means one Flirt-Gift and one Flirt-Chat per day per NPC. The notes do not say whether "a day" is an in-game day or a real-time day, so I would not promise a number of days to 100.
Flirting as one character costs you with the others
This is the line that will catch people out. Per the notes: if you flirt with a certain NPC as one playable character, "their trust with the other playable characters will decrease." The notes do not give an amount.
My reading is that an NPC you court as Kliff is not a free romance option for Damiane or Oongka as well. If you intend to swap between the three characters, decide up front who is pursuing whom. The notes do not say whether the reduction applies only to the extra romance level or also to ordinary trust, so I would treat both as at risk.

Who can be romanced is still unpublished
Neither the launch notes nor the October 20 overview names a single romanceable NPC or says how many there are. The overview says only "some of Pywel's inhabitants". The launch notes add one condition, and it is a spoiler-flagged line, so skip this paragraph if you want it fresh: for the witches, you must complete each witch's sanctum quest first. The same line says "some NPCs may require special conditions to be met," with no list.
Until Pearl Abyss or a source that shows the game itself confirms a name, treat any list of romance options as unconfirmed.
What marriage gives you
Once you propose and the NPC accepts, the launch notes list the consequences:
- Appearance changes. You can change your spouse's appearance at barber shops. The notes also say new barber shops were added in major cities and can be used regardless of camp, a change our dyes and barber guide predates.
- Map presence. Your spouse's icon shows on the world map and the minimap.
- Travel together. You can travel with your spouse. Hotfix 2.04.02 fixed a bug where your spouse or a comrade would follow you into water, and another where a spouse would repeatedly behave abnormally in combat.
- Gifts. Your spouse "may also give you gifts from time to time." The notes do not say what the gifts are or how often. Hotfix 2.04.03 fixed an issue where spouses did not give gifts properly after marriage, so if you married before October 31 and have seen nothing, update first.
- A breakup option. After marriage you can break up, but "doing so comes at a cost." The cost is not stated.
Residences: where your spouse lives
The launch notes add 17 residences. They are built through dispatch missions, the same system behind your camp comrades, so the comrades guide is the place to learn how a dispatch works. Once you designate a residence, your spouse lives there, and the map shows an icon for the residence's owner among Kliff, Oongka and Damiane.
That 17 is separate from the home you can build yourself. The upgraded housing system, with free-form walls and windows, is under Home Decoration > Layout > Free Construction. The notes give its gate as completing Luke's Request, one of the Greymane faction quests under "Grounds of the Sunrise", after setting up camp in Howling Hill. Our housing guide describes the base-game version of that system. The residences are a different thing: places a spouse lives, not rooms you design.
Festivals and Honorary Greymanes
Romance is only half of the new social layer. The launch notes also add a mission to hold festivals at camp. NPCs you have reached a certain trust level with visit for a limited time, and talking to them at a festival builds trust "more quickly." The notes name no trust threshold, and the October 20 overview's separate gate, a camp "upgraded to a certain level", also has no stated number. The camp loop that gets you there is in our camp guide.
Certain festival visitors can be hired as Honorary Greymanes. They can be sent on dispatch missions like your other comrades, but "some features may be unavailable to them." Hotfix 2.04.03 adjusted festivals so that customer visit intervals no longer lengthen during nighttime hours.

The hotfix trail since launch
The romance and social-feature changes in the launch notes and the hotfix notices since, in order. The first hotfix notice, also titled 2.04.00, contains no romance change. The version shown in game stayed at 2.04.00 after the first hotfix, which the notice itself explains, so I list the notices by their titles and dates.
| Notice | Date | Change that touches romance or social features |
|---|---|---|
| 2.04.00 (launch) | Oct 29 | Chat, Gift, Flirt, proposals, spouses, 17 residences, festivals and Honorary Greymanes added |
| 2.04.02 hotfix | Oct 30 | Spouse or comrade no longer follows you into water; spouse no longer behaves abnormally in combat |
| 2.04.03 hotfix | Oct 31 | Gift takes multiple items and quantities; items no longer bounce back instead of being delivered; spouse gifts after marriage fixed; festival customer timing at night adjusted |
| 2.04.04 hotfix | Nov 1 | Some Gift UI text that was showing in Korean fixed |
Two things to know about delivery. The 2.04.03 and 2.04.04 notices list Xbox as "available at a later time", and all of the notices list the Mac App Store as later. Pearl Abyss's launch notice says the Mac App Store update "may arrive slightly later than on other platforms" and points to the patch notes for status. Pearl Abyss also warns to update the base game before playing so the base game and DLC match.
What is still broken
Pearl Abyss's Known Issues notice, last updated November 1 at 03:00 UTC, has one entry that matters most for this guide: "Interactions with NPCs, mounts, and specific objects is unavailable in certain situations." Its listed workaround is restarting the game. If a Chat, Gift or Flirt option is missing from an NPC you expect it on, that is the first thing to try.
Two more entries sit nearby. Greymane faction quests cannot be progressed while playing as Damiane or Oongka, which matters because Luke's Request, the housing gate above, is a Greymane faction quest. And the game may crash if the base game and the DLC are on different versions, so update both.
What I could not verify
- Which NPCs can be romanced, and how many. No Pearl Abyss notice names any.
- How trust grows before Flirt appears. The notes describe the extra level, not what ordinary trust level, if any, unlocks the Flirt button.
- Whether a "day" is in-game or real time for the once-a-day limit.
- The size of the trust penalty for flirting as another character.
- What a spouse's gifts are and what breaking up costs.
- Whether marriage changes stats or gives a buff. The notes list no gameplay bonus, and I will not claim one.
- Whether the romance interface appears for players without the DLC. The notes say saves created with the DLC installed cannot be loaded on a game version without it. They do not say what base-game players see.
Quick Action Checklist
- Update first. Install the latest base-game and DLC patch before judging any romance bug; the spouse-gift fix only arrived with 2.04.03.
- Pick one character per romance. Flirting as one playable character lowers that NPC's trust with the other two.
- Use the cooldown readout. The additional trust can rise once a day per interaction type, and the game displays the wait.
- Hunt for preference books before you spend gifts.
- Remember the witches' condition: their sanctum quests come first.
- Build residences through dispatch missions if you want a spouse to have a home; the map shows who owns each one.
- Hold a festival once the camp is upgraded to reach more NPCs and speed up trust.
- Restart the game if an NPC will not offer interaction options.
