Crimson Desert Fishing Guide: Rods, Legendary Fish, Pond

Crimson Desert fishing in one place: how to learn it, the four rods and how to get each, the spots two guides agree on, all five legendary fish, the camp pond, and the May patch that made legendary fish unsellable while a March guide still lists a sell price for them.

Kliff, with a round wooden shield slung on his back, stands in tall grass on a riverbank holding a fishing rod, his line running out into a clear, rocky stream below tall pines, log buildings and a pale rock cliff in Crimson Desert.

Fishing is the slow road to the rarest achievement

Steam's global achievement page, read on October 10, 2026, puts Natural Collector at 0.4% of players. That is the lowest of Crimson Desert's 34. It asks for every Life challenge, which PowerPyx counts at 12, and one of those is The Underwater Ecosystem: Knowledge of 56 fish and water creatures, five of them legendary.

Our camp guide treats fishing only as a supply run for the cooking pot, in a section it shares with hunting and gathering. That undersells it. This guide covers the rest: how Kliff learns to fish, the four rods, where the rare fish are, all five legendary fish, and the camp pond.

It also covers the rule Pearl Abyss rewrote in May. Patch 1.08.00 made legendary fish impossible to sell, use or discard. KeenGamer's March fishing guide still lists a 10-silver sell price for them and tells you to donate them to camp or feed them to cats, and Fextralife's pets page still lists the cat trick.

Pearl Abyss's patch notes carry fishing lines in twelve patches, from 1.04.00 on April 23 to 1.16.00 on August 1. Nothing since then, through the 2.03.02 hotfix on September 23, touches fishing. Where a detail below comes from those notes, the patch is named. Where it comes from a fan guide instead, the guide is named.

How to start fishing

Kliff learns to fish by watching someone else do it. PlayStation's pre-launch hands-on describes driving bandits out of a fish market, after which the fishermen moved back in and could be observed. Console Pulse points you at the fishermen at Nas River Fishing Dock, which VGC places southeast of Hernand.

Then you need a rod. Three early ways to get one (KeenGamer's shop lists also show it at the Rodbel and Vellua fishing docks):

  • Finley at Nas River Fishing Dock sells a basic Fishing Rod. VGC calls it a small fee, and KeenGamer prices it at 15 copper.
  • The Provisioner's Shop in Hernand stocks one as well, per PowerPyx. 8bittoast names the shopkeeper Alden and gives the same 15-copper price.
  • Annabelle, north of the Freesword Encampment in Hernand, trades you a basic rod for a Tench. KeenGamer and 8bittoast both describe this, and KeenGamer adds that the quest is not offered if you already own a rod.

Fifteen copper is less than one silver (100 copper make 1 silver, as our trading guide explains), so just buy the rod.

To equip it, PowerPyx and VGC (both written in March) say to hold Left on the D-pad and pick the rod from the bow's slot on that wheel. Patch 1.08.00 later added a dedicated tool slot. The eight tools it lists are the logging axe, mallet, shovel, broom, scythe, pickaxe, drill/chainsaw and fan. A fishing rod is not among them.

The cast, the fight and the reel

PowerPyx, VGC and 8bittoast describe the same loop on controller:

StepInputWhat to watch
AimHold L2 / LTA blue cursor means fishable water; red means nothing will bite there (VGC, 8bittoast)
CastRelease L2 / LTCast above a fish you can see. PowerPyx says that if you can't see fish under the surface, there are none to catch
HookR2 / RT on the bitePowerPyx: a bite shows as large white splashes
Tire itLeft stick, against the fish's pullKeeps the line tight while it thrashes
ReelRotate the right stickOnly while it has stopped thrashing. Reel into a thrash and the line snaps
Land itCatch or ReleaseThe catch card shows the fish's length and both options

The reel input is confirmed by Pearl Abyss's own 1.04.00 notes, which fixed "actions requiring rotation of the right stick, such as Nature's Snare and reeling in a fishing rod" for Xbox controllers with Steam Input turned on.

On PC, KeenGamer and 8bittoast both put the rod on F2 and the hook on the right mouse button. They disagree about the cast key, so check your bindings.

A player character in white plate armour and a white visored helm with a blue plume holds up a grey, black-banded Blackhead Seabream on a rocky shoreline, with a catch card reading 77.7cm and Catch and Release prompts, in Crimson Desert

Five things the guides add, and two the patch notes do:

  • No bait. Console Pulse and NerdsChalk both say standard fishing needs none, and none of the other fishing guides checked for this piece lists a bait item.
  • You can steer the lure. VGC and 8bittoast say holding LT and moving the stick (the left one, per 8bittoast's control table) repositions the lure to attract fish.
  • Size the fish up first. Console Pulse's tip is to angle the camera down at the approaching silhouette and cancel before hooking if it is too small.
  • Snags cost you the fish. VGC says the fish escapes if your line hits obstacles or NPCs, and 8bittoast says a fish that swims behind a rock or submerged object can snap the line.
  • Small fish can be picked up by hand. PowerPyx and KeenGamer describe wading in and picking them up. KeenGamer names Small Gudgeon and Pond Loach and warns that not every fish works. Patch 1.10.00 added animations for putting live fish into the inventory and taking them back out.
  • A spot that never bit may have been bugged. Patch 1.06.00 on May 11 fixed fish not biting "when the hook was cast into certain areas," and made the fishing guide stay on screen while you wait.
  • So might a red cursor at sea. Hotfix 1.12.02 on June 24 fixed "certain areas of the ocean" being classed as "No Fishing Zones."

The four rods, and which one to chase

Effects are from the Fextralife wiki's item pages. Acquisition is from the guides named in each row.

RodHow to get itListed effect
Fishing RodFinley at Nas River Fishing Dock, the Hernand Provisioner, or Annabelle's Tench tradeNone
Fine Fishing RodBlueprint from Grimrak at the Back Alley Shop for 10 silver (8bittoast), crafted at a Blacksmith from 10 Fine Timber, 10 Iron Ore, 3 Thick Hide and 10 FeatherFishing Cooldown Reduction Lv 1
Pororin Fishing RodThe Pororin research node Secret Tools of Life, which VGC says "allows you to dispatch missions to craft" this rod and the Magic ScytheFishing Cooldown Reduction Lv 2
The ClawA gift from the wandering vendor Patrigio at 100 Trust, or taken from the "Item Fisher" NPC at Bounty's Nest (PowerPyx)Reels in a hooked fish automatically

Fextralife and 8bittoast list the same four materials for the Fine rod. KeenGamer also gives 10 silver for it, without mentioning a blueprint. Pearl Abyss's patch notes don't define "Fishing Cooldown Reduction." KeenGamer describes the Fine rod as speeding up how quickly fish bite.

The Pororin rod is a research unlock. VGC priced Secret Tools of Life at 500 silver in March. Patch 1.18.00 later moved research costs from silver to camp funds, so that bill now comes out of the camp's wallet. Opening Pororin's research tree is covered in our knowledge and research guide.

The Claw is the one worth a detour. Reeling is the step where lines snap, and The Claw does it for you. The 1.05.00 notes confirm that "Patrigio's Secret Shop" exists by fixing a display bug in it. PowerPyx says he only appears along roads between 12 AM and 4 AM in-game, and that the road toward Hernand at Howling Hill is an easy place to meet him. The other route, also per PowerPyx, is the Item Fisher at Bounty's Nest, east of Vellua in southern Hernand. Scare him by attacking nearby or using your own rod near him, and he drops The Claw.

For the legendary fish, KeenGamer and 8bittoast point at the Pororin rod, and Console Pulse names either the Pororin rod or The Claw.

Where to fish

KeenGamer's rule of thumb: rivers and lakes give freshwater fish, the sea gives saltwater fish, and deeper water gives better odds of bigger fish.

Before you cast anywhere, though, visit every fishing vendor. PowerPyx says that alone gets you a little over half of the fish Knowledge, because you learn each fish a vendor sells.

For the rarer catches, these are the spots where PowerPyx's fish list and Console Pulse's fishing routes agree:

SpotFish
The waterfall beside Claggy Chasm, west of LongbranchGiant Pond Loach, Crucian Carp
The Red River at Bursada Temple Ruins, in the Crimson Desert regionCatfish, Electric Eel
The water west of Dewhaven Logging Camp, western DelesyiaSalmon, Sockeye Salmon, Paddlefish
Southeast of Thornbriar Fortress, on Demeniss's south coastOpaleye, Crimson Opaleye
Off Demeniss's south coast, south of the Steel MountainsSturgeon
The coast northeast of Marni's Drilling Rig, DelesyiaStriped Marlin, Giant Red Seabream, Broadnose Sevengill Shark
The east coast beside the port of DelesyiaSailfish
Off the southeast coast of the Crimson Desert regionAnglerfish

One single-source extra: PowerPyx says the Blue Whale entry comes from rowing a boat out to the edge of the map.

The same armoured player character holds a pink Red Seabream aloft in deep shadow beside dark water and rocks, with a catch card reading 84.2cm and Catch and Release prompts, in Crimson Desert

The five legendary fish

The Fandom wiki and PowerPyx agree on the five: Golden Tench, Golden Carp, Coelacanth, Golden Coelacanth and Clockwork Fish. Locations are where 8bittoast's list and Console Pulse's routes agree. Where they differ, both are given.

FishWhereHow
Golden TenchA stream southwest of the Mountain of Frozen Souls, in southern HernandA rod, or grab it by hand when its gold shadow surfaces (Console Pulse)
Golden CarpA small lake in Pailune. 8bittoast says east of the Argent Peaks; Console Pulse says below the "P" of Pailune on the mapA rod, or grab the gold shadow
CoelacanthWest of the Cliff of Despair, in DelesyiaPororin Fishing Rod or The Claw
Golden CoelacanthBeside the water south of Forebearer's Barrens. 8bittoast places it in Pailune; Console Pulse says north of Deadfire MountainPororin Fishing Rod or The Claw
Clockwork FishA quicksand pool in the southern Crimson Desert region (Console Pulse). 8bittoast and KeenGamer put it near TashkalpCast into the sand, not water (Console Pulse, NerdsChalk)

Bring a rod even for the two you can grab by hand. NerdsChalk relays player reports that a legendary fish vanishes as soon as you step into the water. Console Pulse, updated in September, still lists the hand grab as the quick option. A rod works either way.

What 1.08.00 changed about legendary fish

This is the part the March guides predate. Patch 1.08.00, posted May 22, says it plainly:

"Legendary fish can no longer be sold, used, or discarded. Additionally, previously sold, used, or discarded legendary fish have been restored to the player's inventory."

Two follow-ups closed the gaps. 1.09.00 on May 29 "fixed an issue where legendary fish could be donated." 1.10.00 on June 5 made legendary fish unusable from quick slots, and fixed extra legendary fish appearing in the pond after loading a save.

Set that against what you could do with one at launch:

UseStatus since May
Sell it (KeenGamer's March 31 guide gives 10 silver each)Blocked by 1.08.00
Donate it to camp for provisions (KeenGamer)Blocked. 1.09.00 calls donating one a bug
Eat it or use it from a quick slotBlocked by 1.08.00, and 1.10.00 took it off quick slots
Feed it to a cat for +100 Trust (KeenGamer; Fextralife's pets page)Unconfirmed. Fextralife's page, last edited June 2, still lists it. 1.08.00's "used, or discarded" reads against it, and I found no test from after May 22 either way
Register it in the camp pondAllowed, one at a time (below)
Fill its Knowledge entryStill the point: 5 of the 56 Underwater Ecosystem entries

The upshot is simpler than the old advice. Catch each legendary once for its Knowledge entry and put your favourite in the pond. If you sold one before May 22, check your inventory, because 1.08.00 says it was given back.

The camp pond

The pond also arrived in 1.08.00. Per Pearl Abyss's notes:

  • There is one at Howling Hill and one at Pailune Camp, each built by completing a pond construction mission.
  • You release fish into it straight from your inventory, or through pond management mode, where Zoom In/Out lets you watch them.
  • Several fish of the same species gradually multiply, at a rate that varies by species.
  • Fish may die if the number registered goes over the pond's capacity.
  • A legendary fish always survives, whatever the fish count or its lifespan. Only one can be registered.

Console Pulse fills in the numbers Pearl Abyss leaves out. You talk to Ross at the Greymane Camp, open the Greymanes tab and assign Howling Hill Camp Pond Construction. It needs 8 Greymanes and 2 in-game days. Console Pulse also says the pond holds 30 ordinary fish and that you can fish from it like any other water. No other source checked here gives those numbers, so treat them as one guide's figures. If you are short of Greymanes, our comrades guide covers recruiting more.

Because same-species fish multiply, a full pond can overflow on its own, and fish may die when it does. Console Pulse's advice is to leave free slots before you sleep. It also warns that cleaning, cooking or selling a big catch destroys it as a pond specimen, so decide before you gut it. Two 1.09.00 fixes are worth knowing too: pond management sometimes would not open, and dying after entering it while taking damage froze your controls. Don't open it mid-fight.

Fish traps, big fish and the rest of the patch trail

More fishing lines from the patch notes:

PatchDateWhat changed
1.04.00Apr 23Fish now stack in the inventory
1.04.02Apr 24Fishing dock vendor's shop UI display fixed
1.05.00May 2A Striped Marlin on the character's back no longer disappears or drops when you use a shop
1.06.00May 11Fish sell prices raised; a fishing shop buying items from players at higher prices fixed
1.08.00May 22Fish traps can now catch fish; griddle-cooked and pan-fried dishes split into fish, meat and vegetable variants
1.09.00May 29The "Clean" prompt no longer shows on fish that cannot be cleaned
1.12.00June 19Extra-large fish, including the Striped Marlin, can no longer be caught in a fish trap
1.13.00July 3Fish traps placed by NPCs now prompt "Pickpocketing" instead of "Take"; salmon and burbot Knowledge text changed
1.15.00July 24A large fish carried on your back no longer vanishes when you collect from a fish trap
1.16.00Aug 1Fish details sometimes not showing after a catch fixed

Four things come out of that list.

  • Big fish ride on your back. Two separate fixes, in 1.05.00 and 1.15.00, describe a large fish carried on the character's back, and the 1.05.00 line names the Striped Marlin.
  • Fish traps exist, and some belong to other people. They have caught fish since 1.08.00, though not extra-large ones since 1.12.00. Since 1.13.00, the prompt on an NPC's trap reads Pickpocketing rather than Take, so emptying one is stealing. What theft costs you in a region is in our Contribution guide. I could not find a source that explains how to get a trap of your own.
  • Old price lists are out of date. 1.06.00 "increased the selling prices of fish," so treat any fish price list written before May 11 as stale.
  • Cleaning is real. KeenGamer describes using a fish from the Use menu to clean it into fillets that take up less space. The 1.09.00 fix confirms a Clean interaction exists. Fish also feed the cooking system in our camp guide, and cats' favourite foods include several fish, listed in our pets guide.

One fishing bug is still open. Pearl Abyss's Known Issues notice, unchanged since its September 21 revision, lists "Fish being caught while fishing in certain areas are unable to move." Our known issues guide tracks it.

The Underwater Ecosystem: 56 entries for Natural Collector

The challenge text, per PowerPyx, asks for all freshwater (25), saltwater (15), legendary (5) and underwater wildlife (11) Knowledge. PowerPyx's category breakdown and the Fandom wiki's Aquatic Creatures list give the same counts:

Knowledge categoryEntries
Small freshwater fish13
Medium freshwater fish10
Large freshwater fish2
Small saltwater fish3
Medium saltwater fish4
Large saltwater fish8
Aquatic creatures (crabs, clams, squid, the Blue Whale and others)11
Legendary fish5
Total56

A grey Blackhead Seabream with dark vertical bands swimming above pale rocks in green water, framed by a ragged brush-stroke border, from Crimson Desert

PowerPyx and Fextralife agree on the rewards: an Abyss Artifact, a Faded Abyss Artifact and Surge III. Console Pulse says the Knowledge itself is under Knowledge > Creatures > Aquatic Creatures.

It is a Life challenge, so it stays locked until you pick up its Sealed Abyss Artifact. Why that matters, and the rest of the Natural Collector list, is in our achievements guide. The two guides disagree on where this one's artifact is. PowerPyx puts it in Demeniss, on the north side of the Spire of Clockwork at the intersection west of Demeniss Sentry Camp. Fextralife puts it at a stone altar southwest of Musket First Outpost in the Crimson Desert region. If the first spot turns up nothing, try the other.

Beyond catching fish yourself, PowerPyx lists three Knowledge sources:

  • Fishing vendors. Visit them all first, as above.
  • Greymane camp expeditions after Chapter 4. These can turn up new fish, but PowerPyx calls the chance of a fish not sold in that area's shop "extremely low."
  • NPCs with a white dot on the minimap. These sometimes teach you a fish, most often near fishing vendors or at Dewhaven Logging Camp.

What I could not verify

  • How to get a fish trap of your own. The patch notes prove traps exist and that NPCs own some. No guide I checked explains how to get one.
  • Whether a legendary fish still feeds a cat. The 1.08.00 wording reads against it, but Fextralife's pet table still lists +100 Trust and I found no test from after May 22.
  • What "Fishing Cooldown Reduction" does in numbers. Pearl Abyss does not define it.
  • Where The Underwater Ecosystem's Sealed Abyss Artifact is. PowerPyx and Fextralife name two different places.
  • The pond's capacity and construction cost. Console Pulse's 30 fish, 8 Greymanes and 2 in-game days are the only figures I found.
  • A sixth legendary. Fextralife's cat-food table lists a "Hexe Earthen Fish" alongside the five. It is not among the five legendary entries PowerPyx and the Fandom wiki count for the challenge.
  • Whether Charting the Unknown adds fishing. The DLC is due October 29, 2026 at 22:00 UTC, per Pearl Abyss's September 30 date notice. Its official page and its Steam description promise sailing, new islands and diving for sunken treasure, but neither mentions fishing.
  • Current fish prices. 1.06.00 raised them, and no source I found has re-listed them since.

Quick Action Checklist

  • Learn it by observing fishermen. Console Pulse points to the ones at Nas River Fishing Dock, southeast of Hernand.
  • Buy a basic rod for about 15 copper from Finley or the Hernand Provisioner, or trade Annabelle a Tench for one.
  • Cast on blue. Hold L2/LT, release over a fish you can see, hit R2/RT on the bite, steer the left stick against it, and rotate the right stick only while it is still. No bait needed.
  • Visit every fishing vendor before you start hunting. That covers a little over half the fish Knowledge.
  • Upgrade to The Claw (Patrigio at 100 Trust, or the Item Fisher at Bounty's Nest) or the Pororin Fishing Rod (the Secret Tools of Life research node) before you go after the legendary fish.
  • Cast into the sand for the Clockwork Fish.
  • Don't plan to sell, donate, eat or use legendary fish. Since 1.08.00 and 1.09.00 you can't. Catch each once for Knowledge, and register one in the pond.
  • Build the pond through Ross: Howling Hill Camp Pond Construction, which Console Pulse says needs 8 Greymanes and 2 in-game days. Leave room, because same-species fish multiply and fish may die once the pond is over capacity.
  • Keep a big catch whole if you want it in the pond. Console Pulse warns that cleaning, cooking or selling it removes it as a pond specimen.
  • Leave other people's fish traps alone unless you mean to steal. Since 1.13.00 the prompt reads Pickpocketing.
  • Grab The Underwater Ecosystem's Sealed Abyss Artifact. Guides place it in Demeniss or near Musket First Outpost.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you start fishing in Crimson Desert?
In Crimson Desert, Kliff learns fishing by observing fishermen; Console Pulse points to the ones at Nas River Fishing Dock, southeast of Hernand. You then need a basic Fishing Rod, which Finley at Nas River Fishing Dock and the Provisioner's Shop in Hernand sell for about 15 copper. You can also get one free from Annabelle, north of the Freesword Encampment, by giving her a Tench. Equip it from the wheel you open by holding Left on the D-pad.
How does the Crimson Desert fishing minigame work?
To fish in Crimson Desert, hold L2/LT to aim until the cursor turns blue, then release to cast above a fish you can see. Press R2/RT when it bites. Push the left stick against the direction the fish pulls to tire it, and rotate the right stick to reel only while it has stopped thrashing, because reeling during a thrash snaps the line. No bait is needed.
What is the best fishing rod in Crimson Desert?
PowerPyx calls The Claw the best fishing rod in Crimson Desert, because it reels in a hooked fish automatically. You get it from the wandering vendor Patrigio, who appears on roads between 12 AM and 4 AM in-game, by raising his Trust to 100, or by making the Item Fisher at Bounty's Nest drop it. The Pororin Fishing Rod, unlocked through the Pororin research node Secret Tools of Life, carries Fishing Cooldown Reduction Lv 2. Guides recommend either one for legendary fish.
Where are the legendary fish in Crimson Desert?
Crimson Desert has five legendary fish. The Golden Tench is in a stream southwest of the Mountain of Frozen Souls in southern Hernand. The Golden Carp is in a small lake in Pailune. The Coelacanth is west of the Cliff of Despair in Delesyia. The Golden Coelacanth is beside the water south of Forebearer's Barrens. The Clockwork Fish is caught by casting into a quicksand pool in the southern Crimson Desert region. Guides recommend the Pororin Fishing Rod or The Claw for them.
Can you sell legendary fish in Crimson Desert?
No. Since patch 1.08.00 on May 22, 2026, Crimson Desert legendary fish cannot be sold, used or discarded, and any that had been sold, used or discarded were returned to players' inventories. Patch 1.09.00 also fixed legendary fish being donatable. Their confirmed remaining uses are Knowledge entries for The Underwater Ecosystem challenge and the camp pond, which holds one legendary fish at a time. Whether one can still be fed to a cat has not been confirmed since the change.
How do you unlock the fish pond in Crimson Desert?
Patch 1.08.00 added a fish pond to both Greymane camps in Crimson Desert, Howling Hill and Pailune Camp, each built through a pond construction mission. Console Pulse says you talk to Ross, open the Greymanes tab and assign Howling Hill Camp Pond Construction, which needs 8 Greymanes and 2 in-game days. Same-species fish multiply over time, fish can die if the pond goes over capacity (Console Pulse says 30 ordinary fish), and one legendary fish can be registered and never dies.
How many fish do you need for The Underwater Ecosystem challenge?
The Underwater Ecosystem, a Life challenge in Crimson Desert, needs Knowledge of 56 entries: 25 freshwater fish, 15 saltwater fish, 5 legendary fish and 11 underwater wildlife creatures. It rewards an Abyss Artifact, a Faded Abyss Artifact and Surge III, and it counts toward Natural Collector, Crimson Desert's rarest achievement on Steam at 0.4% of players as of October 10, 2026. Visiting every fishing vendor teaches a little over half of the fish Knowledge, per PowerPyx.
