Elden Ring Boc the Seamster Questline: Every Step
Boc the Seamster turns up at six places between Limgrave and Leyndell, and all he really gives you is free armor alterations. Here is every stop, what the Gold Sewing Needle adds, where the wikis disagree, and why you can alter armor without him anyway.

Boc the Seamster's main job is altering your armor for free, and his questline, from the demi-human lying beside the Coastal Cave grace to the Larval Tear he asks for at East Capital Rampart, decides whether you keep that service. You do not even need him for it. Fandom says armor adjustment is unlocked at any Site of Grace by the Tailoring Tools the Demi-Human Chiefs drop, for a rune cost each time, and that Boc simply does the same job at no charge once he has the Sewing Needle.
That makes Boc a questline you can ignore without losing anything but runes, and one that is easy to break by accident. Fandom's questline list has six stops. Three are marked optional: Lake-Facing Cliffs, East Raya Lucaria Gate and Altus Highway Junction. The tree, the Coastal Cave and the final conversation in Leyndell are not. The route, the one item that lifts his service to demigod armor, and the choice that ends it are all below.
What Boc actually gives you

Armor adjustment changes the look of chest armor and headgear. The adjusted piece is marked "(Altered)" in your inventory, per Fandom's Armor Adjustment page. That page lists roughly eighty base pieces as alterable and notes that DLC and cut armor are missing from its list, so treat it as a floor, not a full count.
Four items decide who can do the sewing:
| Item | Where it comes from | What it unlocks | Cost to you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tailoring Tools | Dropped by the two Demi-Human Chiefs in Coastal Cave (Fandom, Fextralife) | Armor adjustment at any Site of Grace | Runes each time |
| Sewing Needle | Same Demi-Human Chief fight | Returning it to Boc starts his questline and, later, his free service | Free once Boc has it |
| Golden Tailoring Tools | Chest in the Church of Vows, next to the Basin of Atonement (Fandom) | Demigod attire adjustment at any Site of Grace | Runes each time |
| Gold Sewing Needle | Same chest as the Golden Tailoring Tools | Gives Boc the ability to alter demigod attire | Free once Boc has it |
Neither wiki page I read gives the rune price per adjustment, so I will not guess one. What the table does show is the whole trade: with both sets of tools you can alter everything yourself at a grace, and Boc only saves you the runes. If you never want to think about it again, finish his questline. If you would rather keep a Larval Tear for Rennala, you lose nothing but the discount.
The whole questline in six stops
Fandom's Boc page lists six places. Fextralife's page walks the same ground and adds the grace names below.
| # | Region | Where | What to do | Optional on Fandom's list |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Limgrave | A small tree near Gatefront Ruins (Fandom). Fextralife: northwest of Murkwater Bridge | Attack or roll into the tree to break the spell | Not marked |
| 2 | Limgrave | Beside the Site of Grace at the start of Coastal Cave | Beat the Demi-Human Chief duo, bring back the Sewing Needle | Not marked |
| 3 | Liurnia of the Lakes | Lake-Facing Cliffs grace | Talk to him; he offers free alterations | Yes |
| 4 | Liurnia of the Lakes | East Raya Lucaria Gate | Give him the Gold Sewing Needle | Yes |
| 5 | Altus Plateau | Altus Highway Junction | Let him call you Lord, which unlocks the My Lord gesture | Yes |
| 6 | Leyndell, Royal Capital | East Capital Rampart | Larval Tear, refusal, or the Prattling Pate | Not marked |
Fextralife says the later stops appear in ascending order according to the furthest Site of Grace you have rested at, so skipping one does not strand him. Fandom says the Gold Sewing Needle can still be given at a later stop if you miss stop 4.
Limgrave: the tree and the Coastal Cave
Boc starts the game as a bush. Fandom's lore section says a spell turned him into a tree after his demi-human kin cast him out, and that he calls out to passers-by until you hit or roll into him. Doing so reverses the illusion and he turns back. Fextralife places the tree east of the telescope south of the Agheel Lake North grace in one section and northwest of Murkwater Bridge in another; both descriptions sit in the same corner of Limgrave.
He then tells you he has been thrown out of the cave on the western shore and offers to sneak back in for something of value. Fandom says his kin catch and beat him, and you find him lying beside the Site of Grace at the start of Coastal Cave. Fandom's dialogue record has him warning you off: they will rush in and beat you to a pulp.
Ignore the warning. The two Demi-Human Chiefs inside are the dual boss that drops both the Tailoring Tools and the Sewing Needle, per Fandom's Demi-Human Chief page, which lists 1,215 HP each and 1,200 runes. Take the needle back to Boc at the cave entrance. He explains it was his mother's, a seamstress's, and decides he cannot just curl up and die. He moves on.
Liurnia: the free alterations start

Rest at the Lake-Facing Cliffs grace and he is there, calling you master and offering to serve as your seamster. Per his own dialogue on Fandom, he cannot make anything from scratch but will adjust what you already own. That is the free service switched on.
At East Raya Lucaria Gate he moves again once you have reached the Academy. Fextralife says you need to speak with him there and then rest, which unlocks a dialogue option with Melina about him. He does not need an Academy Glintstone Key for the Grand Library at the end of his line, per Fandom's notes.
The Gold Sewing Needle

By default Boc's dialogue includes an apology: your wardrobe includes old demigod garb he cannot adjust. His mother told him a royal seamster could do it in a jiffy.
The fix is in the Church of Vows, on the east side of Liurnia. Fandom says the Gold Sewing Needle sits in a treasure chest beside the Basin of Atonement, alongside the Golden Tailoring Tools. Fandom describes it as one of the tools Radagon brought when he married into the Carian line.
Giving the needle to Boc is slightly picky. Fextralife says you must hold the needle plus at least one legendary armor piece, and it counts only demigod armor, so something like Briar Armor will not do. Fextralife also says Finger Reader Enia at Roundtable Hold is the source of that armor. Fandom's My Lord gesture page words the requirement as obtaining any alterable demigod attire first. Either way, bring a demigod piece.
Fandom says he can take the needle at East Raya Lucaria Gate or at any later stop; Fextralife says any stop except Lake-Facing Cliffs. When he receives it, his dialogue is a small gem: he calls himself the golden seamster and says he will now be able to sew even the threads of the demigods.
Altus and Leyndell: Lord, Rennala and the Pate
At Altus Highway Junction, with the needle already given, Fandom says he asks if he may call you Lord. Agree and you unlock the My Lord gesture, which Fandom's gesture page says locks the player in place during the animation. Refuse and he apologizes for overstepping.
The last stop is East Capital Rampart in Leyndell, and it only matters if Rennala is dead. Per Fandom, he then asks for a Larval Tear. Three branches follow, covered in more depth in the Larval Tear respec guide:
- Give the tear. He goes to Raya Lucaria Grand Library, appears kneeling in human form and unresponsive, and is dead after you reload the area. Fandom's Armor Adjustment notes say he stops providing services if reborn or killed.
- Refuse, then pick "What do you really think?" He dies just outside the Grand Library.
- Use the Prattling Pate "You're Beautiful" in front of him. He hears his mother's voice, asks whether you find him beautiful, and stays at East Capital Rampart for the rest of the game.

Fandom and Fextralife both place the Pate in the Hermit Village on Mt. Gelmir; Fandom says it lies on the body of a demi-human on the stoop of one of the stone houses. Fextralife says using the Pate removes the Larval Tear option: it is one or the other. Its item description, quoted on Fandom, ends with the line that it must have been a mother speaking.
The Pate is a reusable tool. Fandom's quest-items table says using it before him at East Capital Rampart averts his death and ends the questline.

Fandom's gallery includes this human face under the caption "Boc the Human", the form he takes when Rennala rebirths him.
Where the wikis disagree
- Tree location. Fandom says near Gatefront Ruins. Fextralife gives two descriptions on one page (east of a telescope south of Agheel Lake North, and northwest of Murkwater Bridge).
- What you hand over in Coastal Cave. Fandom's Boc page and Sewing Needle page say the needle is what you return. Fextralife says you give him the needle and the Tailoring Tools.
- Where he asks to call you Lord. Fandom's Boc page puts it at Altus Highway Junction; Fandom's My Lord gesture page says East Capital Rampart. Fextralife does not say.
- What the Larval Tear does. Fandom says he is dead after you reload the area. One Fextralife section says he is reborn and dies when you rest again; another says he moves beside Rennala and the questline ends if you rest again.
- Doing nothing. Fextralife says that if you do neither, he ends up outside the Raya Lucaria Grand Library and the questline ends.
If you are following the quest in order, none of this stops you. It only matters at the edges, so rest at each grace, talk to him, and re-check his position if he is not where you expect.
What can go wrong
- He dies in one hit. Fextralife says Boc does not respawn, even with Celestial Dew. Do not swing at him in the Rampart.
- His map icon can vanish. Fextralife says that after you burn the Erdtree in the Forge of the Giants and beat Maliketh, his map icon disappears because Leyndell changes. He stays where he was; Fextralife's fix is to go to the spot and light the grace again.
- The Tear is a real cost. If you hand it over, you lose one respec and the free alterations. Fandom calls this the end of his questline.
- Skipping the needle caps him. Without the Gold Sewing Needle, the free service covers ordinary garb only; demigod attire still needs the Golden Tailoring Tools and runes at a grace.
Quick Action Checklist
- Break the tree near Gatefront Ruins and follow Boc into Coastal Cave.
- Beat the Demi-Human Chiefs and give him the Sewing Needle.
- Rest at Lake-Facing Cliffs to switch on the free alterations.
- Loot the Church of Vows chest for the Gold Sewing Needle and the Golden Tailoring Tools, and carry a demigod armor piece.
- Give him the needle at East Raya Lucaria Gate or the next stop, then agree to the Lord request.
- Fetch the Prattling Pate from the Hermit Village on Mt. Gelmir before you reach East Capital Rampart.
- Use the Pate, not a Larval Tear, if you want him alive. Compare the other NPC routes in the Alexander questline guide and the Millicent questline guide.
