Elden Ring Respec Guide: All 27 Larval Tear Locations
Every Rebirth at Rennala costs one Larval Tear, and a Journey only holds 27 of them. Here is where all 18 base-game tears and all nine Shadow of the Erdtree tears are, what the Rebirth menu will and will not let you change, and why eight of the eighteen wait behind Starscourge Radahn.

The base game hides 18 Larval Tears. Shadow of the Erdtree adds nine more. That is the whole respec budget for a Journey: every Rebirth at Rennala eats one tear, nobody sells them in bulk, and eight of the base game's eighteen sit underground in two cities that stay shut until Starscourge Radahn is dead.
Our other Elden Ring guides mention Rebirth a sentence at a time. The starting class guide says a wrong origin costs you one Larval Tear, and the Tarnished Pack guide explains the origin floor. None of them tells you where the tears actually are. This one does: the rules of the menu, all 27 locations, and the order the game really lets you collect them in.
How Rebirth works
Rebirth is a service, not an item. It unlocks the moment you defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon in the Academy of Raya Lucaria. She survives the fight as an NPC, stays in the Grand Library where you met her, and the Fandom wiki places the Rebirth option next to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library Site of Grace. The switch is her Great Rune, the Great Rune of the Unborn, which needs no Divine Tower and no Rune Arc — the Great Runes guide covers how that differs from the rest.
The rules, from the Fandom and Fextralife wikis:
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Cost | One Larval Tear per Rebirth. The Shadow of the Erdtree version of the tear is accepted too |
| Your level | Does not change. You reassign every level you have earned, back up to your current level |
| The floor | No attribute can be set below the value your origin started with |
| Backing out | Free. The tear is consumed only when you answer "Yes" to "Undergo rebirth?" |
| Appearance | Free, no tear. Rennala offers it, and so does the mirror stand in Fia's bedroom at Roundtable Hold |
Two of those rows do most of the planning for you. Because your level is fixed, a Rebirth never hands runes back — every rune you spent levelling stays spent, it just points at different stats. And the floor makes your origin a permanent minimum: a Samurai reborn as a pure caster still carries 15 Dexterity, because that is what the Samurai starts with. The two Tarnished Pack origins carry their own floors, including the Heavy Knight's 17 Endurance.
Neither of the two most recent patches touches these rules. Version 1.17, released 27 August 2026, has no entry for Rebirth or Larval Tears; its notes cover the Tarnished Pack, balance adjustments and bug fixes. Version 1.17.1, released 8 September 2026, fixed a multiplayer issue that let DLC-specific items be obtained by players not eligible for them; it does not mention Rebirth either.
Getting to Rennala

Three things stand between you and the menu.
- The Academy Glintstone Key. It is on a Glintstone Sorcerer's corpse north of the Temple Quarter Site of Grace in Liurnia, behind Glintstone Dragon Smarag. The Fandom wiki notes you can loot it without fighting the dragon. It opens the sealed gates of the Academy.
- The Red Wolf of Radagon, a boss in the Academy's Debate Parlor, which Fextralife lists as a prerequisite fight on the way to her.
- Rennala herself. Fextralife's recommended level for the Academy of Raya Lucaria is 50 to 60, the same band the boss order guide gives her.
One routing wrinkle. If you are running Sorceress Sellen's questline, Sellen takes over Rennala's spot in the library for a while and Rennala moves behind one of the bookshelves; she returns to her usual place once Sellen's questline is complete. If the queen is not where you left her, check the shelves before you panic.
All 18 base-game Larval Tears
Both wikis count 18 in the Lands Between. Here they are by region. The item description explains why so many of them come out of monsters: a Larval Tear is the "core of a creature of mimicry known as a silver tear."
| # | Region | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Limgrave | Kill the lone sword-wielding Wandering Noble directly east of the Agheel Lake South grace. It is a Runebear in disguise |
| 2 | Liurnia of the Lakes | Corpse in the graveyard at the Village of the Albinaurics |
| 3 | Liurnia of the Lakes | Kill the one patrolling Giant Crayfish near the gazebo between Rose Church and Boilprawn Shack. It is a Grafted Scion |
| 4 | Liurnia of the Lakes | Buy from Pidia, Carian Servant at Caria Manor for 3,000 runes (one in stock) |
| 5 | Liurnia of the Lakes | Touch the painter's ghost in the graveyard east of Caria Manor once you hold the "Resurrection" Painting from the Artist's Shack in east Liurnia |
| 6 | Siofra River | Buy from the Abandoned Merchant in the Worshippers' Woods for 3,000 runes (one in stock) |
| 7 | Caelid | Kill the kneeling Wandering Noble by the stone coffins south of the Caelid Highway South grace. It is a Troll |
| 8 | Altus Plateau | Kill the cowering Wandering Noble in the unmarked clifftop ruins southeast of Windmill Village. It is a lion |
| 9 | Mt. Gelmir | Kill the burning corpse beside the first campfire east of the Road of Iniquity grace. It is a Wormface |
| 10 | Consecrated Snowfield | Kill the Wandering Noble half-buried in snow southeast of the Inner Consecrated Snowfield grace. It is a Runebear |
| 11 | Nokron, Eternal City | Corpse in the stone building southeast of the Nokron, Eternal City grace |
| 12 | Nokron, Eternal City | Corpse in a gazebo. Silver Tears drop from above as you approach |
| 13 | Nokron, Eternal City | The Giant Silver Tear at Night's Sacred Ground (Fextralife calls it a Silver Sphere) |
| 14–15 | Nokron, Eternal City | Two from the Mimic Tear boss |
| 16 | Nokstella, Eternal City | The Giant Silver Tear on the bridge |
| 17 | Nokstella, Eternal City | The Giant Silver Tear hanging from the ceiling in the northeast building past the bridge |
| 18 | Nokstella, Eternal City | The Giant Silver Tear dripping Silver Tears from the ceiling in the building at the top of the stairs past the bridge |
Row 17 has a trap Fextralife spells out: you can damage that one from range, but do not land the killing blow while it is still on the ceiling, or the tear drops somewhere you cannot reach.

Radahn is sitting on eight of them
Rows 11 to 18 are the catch. The route into Nokron only opens after Starscourge Radahn dies — per the Fandom wiki, his death drops a star on Limgrave and opens a crater near Fort Haight. Nokstella is gated one step further: it can only be reached through the sending gate at Renna's Rise, and Renna's Rise stays sealed until you have entered Ranni's service and handed her the Fingerslayer Blade, which is found in Nokron's Night's Sacred Ground. So every one of the eight Eternal City tears runs through Radahn, and the last three also run through Ranni. The full chain is laid out in the endings guide, and the fight itself in the Radahn boss guide.
That leaves ten tears you can collect without him, and two of those want Royal Knight Loretta dead first: Pidia's balcony and the Caria Manor graveyard are both reached through the Three Sisters, which sit behind her. Seven of the ten are in Limgrave, Liurnia, Siofra River and Caelid; the other three wait in the Altus Plateau, Mt. Gelmir and the Consecrated Snowfield.
Six of them are monsters in disguise
Rows 1, 3, 7, 8, 9 and 10 are easy to walk past, because nothing about them looks like loot. Each is a different monster wearing the shape of something else. Four of the six are Wandering Nobles; the other two are a crayfish and a burning corpse. Fextralife's notes add that they change shape when you kill them whether or not you have beaten Rennala yet, so you can collect them long before you can spend them.
Two of the four nobles are not alone: Fextralife picks out the Caelid troll as the one kneeling at the western end, and the Consecrated Snowfield runebear is half-buried in snow with two nobles standing next to it. The practical rule: a noble standing, kneeling or cowering somewhere a noble has no business being is worth one swing.
Two of them cost 3,000 runes
Pidia and the Siofra River merchant each sell exactly one, at 3,000 runes. Pidia is on a balcony you reach by dropping down the cliffs from the southeastern side of the Three Sisters. The Abandoned Merchant camps in a cave in the Worshippers' Woods section of Siofra River, up the scaffolding southwest of the Worshippers' Woods grace and along the wooden walkways to the northwest.
For scale: at level 30 a single level costs 5,915 runes, so each of these is about half a level. Buy both the moment you see them.
The nine in Shadow of the Erdtree

The DLC tear has a different icon and description — it is a creature that grows out of spiritgraves rather than the core of a silver tear — but Fandom's Great Rune of the Unborn page says Rennala takes either one, and Fextralife says it functions like the same item. Fextralife lists nine locations, and Game8's DLC list also counts nine. Fandom's own page still flags its location data as missing.
Two conditions apply to all nine. They only appear at night, and they sit in the middle of a ring of gravestones that glow blue. If you are standing in the right spot in daylight, rest at a grace and pass time.
| Region | Where |
|---|---|
| Gravesite Plain | Prospect Town, on a small hill southeast of the large ruins |
| Gravesite Plain | Southeast of the Scorched Ruins |
| Gravesite Plain | Northeast of the Suppressing Pillar |
| Gravesite Plain | South of the Abandoned Ailing Village, just east of the Greatbridge, North grace |
| Scadu Altus | South of the Church of the Crusade |
| Scadu Altus | West of Rabbath's Rise |
| Scadu Altus | East of Messmer's Army Encampment (Game8: follow the path north from the Highroad Cross grace to the hill east of the camp) |
| Rauh Base | On the cliff above the Fog Rift Catacombs, southwest of the Ancient Ruins Base grace |
| Rauh Base | Northwest of the Ravine North grace |
The landmarks are Fextralife's. The Gravesite Plain and Scadu Altus placements come from each landmark's own Fandom page, except the encampment, which has no Fandom page: Game8's directions to it start from Highroad Cross, a Scadu Altus grace on Fandom's region page. The two Rauh Base entries are labelled Rauh Base by Fextralife itself. All three regions match the ones Fandom's Spiritgrave page lists. None of the nine is in the Abyssal Woods, the Cerulean Coast or Enir-Ilim.
What each gate unlocks
Put the two tables together and the whole respec budget for one Journey looks like this:
| What stands in the way | Tears it unlocks | Running total |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing beyond reaching the region | 8 (Limgrave, Liurnia ×2, Siofra River, Caelid, Altus Plateau, Mt. Gelmir, Consecrated Snowfield) | 8 |
| Royal Knight Loretta | 2 (Pidia, the "Resurrection" graveyard) | 10 |
| Starscourge Radahn | 5 (Nokron) | 15 |
| Fingerslayer Blade handed to Ranni | 3 (Nokstella) | 18 |
| Entering Shadow of the Erdtree | 9 | 27 |
The DLC row has its own entry condition: both Mohg, Lord of Blood and Starscourge Radahn must be dead before Miquella's hand opens the Land of Shadow. Radahn, in other words, stands in front of 17 of the 27.
You can hold up to 99 at once, and the Fandom wiki is blunt that the supply is limited: Larval Tears cannot be farmed indefinitely.
New Game Plus and co-op
Larval Tears carry into a new Journey. Fextralife's New Game Plus page files them among the key items you keep, and does not put them on its list of items whose extra copies stop appearing on later Journeys. The menu itself does not carry, though. Great Runes are stripped when a Journey starts, the Great Rune of the Unborn is one of them, and the Academy Glintstone Key goes too — so Rebirth stays locked on the new Journey until you beat Rennala again. That is why the New Game Plus guide says to respec before you press yes, not after.
Co-op is not a loophole. Fextralife notes that a Larval Tear you pick up from one of these enemies while summoned as a Furled Finger is removed from your inventory when you return to your own world.
Boc will ask for one, and it kills him

One NPC wants a tear of his own. Boc the Seamster — the tailor you first find disguised as a small tree near Gatefront Ruins — reaches East Capital Rampart in Leyndell later in his questline, and if you have already beaten Rennala he asks you for a Larval Tear so she can rebirth him.
Per the Fandom wiki, two of the three ways this goes end with him dead:
- Give him the tear and he moves to the Grand Library, kneels there in human form, and is dead when you reload the area. Fextralife adds that his services are gone for the rest of the game.
- Refuse, and a new dialogue option appears, "What do you really think?". Choosing it kills him just outside the Grand Library.
- Use the Prattling Pate "You're Beautiful" in front of him instead of choosing either option, and he survives, staying at East Capital Rampart for the rest of the game.
So the tear Boc asks for costs you twice: once from your respec budget, and once from the tailor who alters your armor. Carry the Prattling Pate when you walk up to him.
Quick Action Checklist
- Beat Rennala early. Rebirth needs no Divine Tower and no Rune Arc, just the Academy Glintstone Key and her defeat, at a recommended level of 50 to 60.
- Open the menu without fear. The tear is only consumed when you confirm "Undergo rebirth?".
- Plan around what Rebirth cannot do. Your level stays the same, no runes come back, and no stat drops below your origin's starting value.
- Buy both 3,000-rune tears from Pidia and the Siofra River merchant as soon as you reach them.
- Swing at out-of-place Wandering Nobles, alone or in a group. Four of the six disguised tear-carriers are nobles, and they transform whether or not Rennala is dead.
- Kill Radahn to open the five in Nokron, then hand Ranni the Fingerslayer Blade to reach the last three in Nokstella.
- Do not kill the Nokstella ceiling sphere on the ceiling. Its tear falls out of reach.
- Hunt the nine DLC tears at night, in the rings of glowing blue gravestones across Gravesite Plain, Scadu Altus and Rauh Base.
- Keep your tear away from Boc unless you are finished with his tailoring, and use the Prattling Pate "You're Beautiful" to keep him alive.
- Respec before starting New Game Plus. Your tears carry over; access to Rennala does not.
