Which Resident Evil Games Should You Play Before Requiem?
You do not need to play nine games to understand Requiem. You need one, maybe two. Here is the honest catch-up list, what each one actually sets up, and what you can skip without missing anything.

Requiem moved five million copies in five days, the fastest start any Resident Evil has ever had. A lot of those copies went to people whose last Resident Evil was a rental with a memory card. So the question clogging every forum and every Steam discussion board right now is the reasonable one: how much homework does this thing actually require?
Less than you think. But not zero, and the "just jump in, it's fine" crowd is glossing over one specific game that does real work.
The Short Answer
You can start with Requiem. It will make sense. Grace Ashcroft is written as an outsider to all of this — an FBI technical analyst, not a BSAA veteran — and the game explains the Raccoon City incident to her because she needs it explained. That is not an accident. Capcom built a newcomer into the cast.
But "makes sense" and "lands" are different things. Requiem is the ninth mainline entry, it is set twenty-eight years after the incident that started everything, and roughly half its emotional payload is aimed at people who were there. If you play exactly one game first, play the Resident Evil 2 remake. If you play two, add Resident Evil 7. Everything past that is a preference, not a prerequisite.
Here is the case for each, and the honest case against.
What Requiem Assumes You Already Know
Requiem is set in October 2026. The premise is Raccoon City Syndrome: a latent strain of the t-Virus that only affects people who survived the 1998 outbreak, dormant for nearly three decades and now finally manifesting. Survivors of a disaster you may never have played through are dropping dead, and Grace is the analyst assigned to figure out why.
To follow that, you need four things:
- Raccoon City existed, and it fell. A midwestern city, a viral outbreak in September 1998, a full civilian collapse.
- Umbrella did it. A pharmaceutical conglomerate running bioweapons research under the city.
- The government erased the evidence. A missile strike, a crater, an official story.
- Leon S. Kennedy was there on day one. Rookie cop, first shift, worst night in American fiction.
Requiem gives you all four. It just gives them to you as briefing material rather than as memory. Our story and setting breakdown covers the confirmed plot skeleton if you want the summary version instead of a fifty-hour reading list.

Resident Evil 2 Remake Is the One That Actually Matters
If you play nothing else, play this. The 2019 remake is Leon's origin — his first day as a Raccoon City police officer, which is also the day the city dies. Every piece of weight Requiem hangs on Leon's shoulders traces back to a building you walk through in RE2.
It is also, by a wide margin, the most-played game in the series. Capcom's own platinum titles ledger puts the RE2 remake at 18.30 million units as of March 31, 2026 — ahead of RE7 at 17.40 million, Village at 14.90 million, and the RE4 remake at 13.60 million. That is not a coincidence of marketing. It is the entry point most people actually used.
Budget around ten hours for one campaign. It has two protagonists with overlapping-but-distinct routes, so a complete run is closer to double that, but you do not need both for Requiem. Play Leon's.
Why Sherry Birkin Makes RE2 Non-Optional
Sherry Birkin returns in Requiem as a confirmed supporting character on Leon's side of the campaign. She debuted in RE2 as a twelve-year-old you spend a chunk of the game protecting, and she was later playable in Resident Evil 6.
If you have not played RE2, she is a competent adult voice on a radio. If you have, she is a kid Leon dragged out of a collapsing city, now grown, still tangled in the same disaster. Same scenes, completely different temperature. That is the single clearest example of what you gain by doing the reading, and it is why I would not tell anyone to skip RE2 and call it a fair experience.
Resident Evil 3 Remake Explains the Crater
Requiem spends a substantial stretch of its runtime in the ruins of Raccoon City. The RE3 remake, from 2020, is the game that shows you how the city got that way — the evacuation collapse, the sterilization operation, the missile. It runs parallel to RE2 and overlaps with it, so playing them back to back gives you two angles on the same week.
It is also the shortest mainline entry by a distance. Most first playthroughs on Standard land around six hours, which is why it got a rougher reception than RE2 at launch. For catch-up purposes that brevity is a feature: six hours to understand why every skyline in Requiem's third act is a silhouette of something that used to be a building.
Worth it? Yes, if you have the evening. Necessary? No. Requiem tells you the city was destroyed. RE3 just makes you watch.
Resident Evil 7 Is the Template for Grace
This one is not lore homework. It is gameplay homework, and it might matter more.
Koshi Nakanishi directed both RE7 and Requiem. RE7 is the game that pulled the series out of its action era and back into first-person, low-ammo, one-building dread, and Grace's half of Requiem is built from the same parts: an under-armed protagonist, a confined interior, a stalker you cannot kill your way past. Nakanishi has said in interviews that the third-person option in Requiem exists partly because RE7's first-person view was too intense for some players to finish at all — which tells you exactly how directly the two games are related.
Play RE7 and you will walk into the Wrenwood Hotel already knowing the grammar. You will know to check every drawer, to treat a handgun round as a resource rather than an answer, and to stop trying to fight the thing following you. Our Requiem beginner guide covers the same lessons in twenty minutes, but the game teaches them better.
Resident Evil 4 Remake Is the Template for Leon
Same logic, opposite half. Leon in Requiem plays like his RE4 remake self — full arsenal, attaché case inventory, parries and dodges driven by quick-time prompts, aggressive crowd control rather than avoidance. If those systems are new to you, Leon's chapters will feel like a different game bolted onto Grace's, because mechanically they are.
The 2023 remake is also just an outstanding action game and, at 13.60 million units, the fastest the series has ever reached ten million. But for Requiem specifically, it is a tutorial you can skip. Leon's half is forgiving enough to learn on the job, and the Leon combat guide will get you there faster.
Resident Evil Village Is the Optional One
Village is the direct predecessor — the eighth mainline entry, 2021 — and it is the one people assume they need because it came immediately before. They do not. Village closes out the Ethan Winters story that RE7 opened, in Europe, with a cast Requiem does not use. Its connection to Requiem is chronological, not narrative.
Play it because it is good. Do not play it because you think Requiem depends on it.
Resident Evil Outbreak Is the Deep Cut You Cannot Legally Play
Here is the frustrating one. Grace Ashcroft is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, the Raccoon Press reporter who was one of the eight playable survivors in Resident Evil Outbreak on the PS2 in 2003. Alyssa lived through 1998. She was killed at the Wrenwood Hotel roughly eight years before Requiem opens, and that death is the thread Grace is pulling on from the first scene.

So: essential background, right? Except Outbreak and Outbreak File #2 have never been remastered or ported. No PS4 release, no PC release, nothing on a current storefront. The only legitimate way to play them is to own a PS2 and the discs. Capcom folded a twenty-three-year-old spin-off's protagonist into the mainline story of its fastest-selling game and left the source material stranded on hardware that stopped shipping in 2013.
You are not missing mechanics here — Outbreak is a co-op-first PS2 game with all the friction that implies. You are missing about ninety minutes of context that Requiem mostly re-explains anyway. Read a summary and move on. And if this ends up being the pressure that finally gets Capcom to remaster them, good.
What You Can Safely Skip
Everything else. Genuinely.
- Resident Evil 5 and 6 — global bioterrorism, Chris and Jill, a Sherry appearance in RE6 that Requiem does not build on. Skippable.
- Code: Veronica and the Revelations games — good, weird, irrelevant here.
- Resident Evil 1 and its remake — the Spencer Mansion is franchise foundation, but Requiem does not lean on it the way it leans on the city.
- Every live-action film — separate continuity, separate problems.
- RE Resistance, Re:Verse, the multiplayer detours — no.
The series has thirty years of branches. Requiem prunes almost all of them and points at one city.
The Weekend Catch-Up Plan
If you have a weekend and want maximum return per hour, this is the order:
- Resident Evil 2 remake, Leon campaign — about 10 hours. Non-negotiable if you want Sherry and Leon to land.
- Resident Evil 7 — about 10 hours. Do this if Grace's half is what you are here for.
- Resident Evil 3 remake — about 6 hours. Do this if you want the ruins to hit.
- Resident Evil 4 remake — about 16 hours. Do this because you want to, not because Requiem needs it.
All four are on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC, and all four go on sale constantly. If you only have one evening, do step one and stop.
The Bottom Line
Requiem is playable cold, and it reviewed like a game that earns its own hype — Metacritic aggregates in the high 80s to low 90s across all four platforms, and 6.90 million units sold by the end of March 2026. Capcom built Grace as a deliberate on-ramp for people with no series history.
But the RE2 remake is ten hours that convert a handful of Requiem's scenes from "fine" to "oh." Sherry Birkin is the whole argument. Play it, then go in. Start with the Requiem beginner guide when you are ready, or browse the full Resident Evil Requiem coverage hub.
