CS2 Spray Control Guide: Recoil Patterns That Work
The AK spray pattern is identical every single time you pull the trigger. That is not a figure of speech — it is a lookup table. Here is how CS2 recoil and inaccuracy actually work, and how to practise the parts that transfer to a real round.

The AK-47's spray pattern is a lookup table. Not a tendency, not a general shape — an actual pre-generated list of horizontal and vertical values that the game reads one entry at a time, in order, every time you hold the trigger. Shot 14 kicks exactly as far and in exactly the same direction as it did in your last match, your last thousand matches, and everyone else's. That is why spray control is learnable at all, and why "I got unlucky" is almost never true for the first ten bullets.
What confuses people is that the pattern is only half the system. The other half is deliberately random, and knowing which half is punishing you is the difference between fixing your aim and grinding a workshop map for nothing.
Recoil and inaccuracy are two different systems
Counter-Strike runs two independent mechanics on every bullet you fire.
Recoil is deterministic. It moves your shot off your crosshair by a fixed amount and direction pulled from that weapon's table. It also pushes your view slightly, which is the kick you feel.
Inaccuracy is random. It deviates every shot from its aim point by a randomly chosen amount and direction inside a cone. Lower inaccuracy means a smaller cone.
They stack, in that order: the game calculates recoil first, then applies inaccuracy as a random deviation from the already-recoiled angle. So a perfectly compensated 20-bullet spray still will not land 20 bullets in a dinner plate, because inaccuracy climbs as you keep firing and no amount of mouse control touches it.
This distinction has one enormous practical consequence. Recoil you fix with your mouse. Inaccuracy you fix with your feet and your trigger discipline. If your first shot missed, that was inaccuracy, and pulling down harder will never help.
The buy menu even quantifies it. Every weapon lists an Accurate Range, which Valve's own hints define as the distance at which the weapon is guaranteed to hit a 30-centimetre dinner plate — from a standstill. That last clause is the whole game.
Why the AK spray pattern is identical every time
For fully automatic weapons, as long as the mouse button stays down, an index into the recoil table increments by one per shot. The pattern is constant regardless of the player's status — crouching, standing, moving, health, none of it changes which entry gets read.
Two details that most guides skip:
The first shot of a spray is unaffected by recoil entirely. It lands where your crosshair is, subject only to inaccuracy. This is why first-shot accuracy is the single most valuable stat in a rifle duel, and why one-tapping beats spraying at range every time.
Recoil recovery walks back down the table. When you release the trigger, the index falls back toward zero rather than resetting instantly, and the speed of that fall differs per weapon. Fire again while it is still dropping and you resume from wherever the index currently sits — not from the top. That is precisely why a panicked re-tap mid-spray lands somewhere unexpected: you are reading the middle of the table with your crosshair back at the start position.
The shape of a spray and where it goes wrong
Every automatic rifle in CS2 follows roughly the same three-phase shape:
- Shots 1 to about 4 — nearly pure vertical. Heavy upward climb, almost no horizontal movement. Pull straight down, proportionally.
- The middle section — the transition. Vertical climb flattens out and horizontal movement takes over.
- The tail — horizontal sway. Shots swing left and right with comparatively little vertical change. This is where most players fall apart, because they are still pulling down when the gun stopped climbing five bullets ago.
The general rule the wiki states plainly: more powerful weapons like the AK-47 have a more active and less controllable pattern, but less bullet spread. You get a harder pattern to learn in exchange for tighter grouping when you learn it.
Where sprays actually die in real rounds is not the tail. It is the transition. Players learn the first four bullets on a workshop wall, take that into a match, get their first four on target, then keep dragging downward into the horizontal phase and paint the floor. If you are going to learn one segment properly, learn shots 5 through 12.

Crouching does not reduce recoil
This is the most persistent myth in Counter-Strike and it is flatly wrong. Crouching does not reduce the amount of recoil applied to your shots. Moving does not increase it either. The recoil table does not care what your legs are doing.
What crouching does change is inaccuracy, and here the picture is genuinely counterintuitive:
- With most weapons, you are less inaccurate standing still than crouching. Crouching does not improve your first-shot accuracy — it usually makes it slightly worse.
- But inaccuracy recovers faster when crouching than standing with nearly all weapons. Between bursts, a crouched player's cone tightens back up sooner.
So crouching is not an accuracy button. It is a recovery-rate trade with a smaller hitbox attached, and it costs you the ability to reposition. Crouch to hold an angle you have already committed to, or to finish a spray you have already started. Do not crouch as your reaction to being shot at.
Movement inaccuracy, by contrast, is brutal and non-negotiable. Moving at full speed, jumping, being mid-air, and climbing ladders all drastically increase inaccuracy. The one nuance worth knowing is that you are less inaccurate if you are stationary while mid-air, including at the peak of a jump — which is exactly why jump-shots with the SSG 08 work and jump-shots with an AK do not.
Counter-strafing is the other half of the skill
Because inaccuracy is driven by your velocity, the fastest way to make yourself accurate is to have zero velocity. Counter-strafing is how you get there without stopping being a moving target for longer than necessary: strafing right, you tap A to kill your momentum, and the moment your speed hits zero your inaccuracy drops to standing values. Shoot in that window, then keep moving.
CS2 makes this more honest than CS:GO did. Sub-tick netcode relays what happened between server ticks as a time value rather than snapping everything to the nearest tick, so the exact instant you stopped and the exact instant you clicked are both preserved. A correctly timed counter-strafe registers as a correctly timed counter-strafe. It also means a sloppy one is no longer bailed out by tick rounding.
The practical drill is unglamorous: strafe, stop, one shot, strafe the other way, stop, one shot. Do it against a static bot at mid-range until stopping is muscle memory rather than a decision. Peeking is not aiming — it is a movement skill with an aiming step bolted onto the end.
Burst, tap, spray: picking the right one
Because inaccuracy recovers when you stop firing, tap firing is a legitimate compromise between rate of fire and accuracy rather than a beginner's crutch. Pick by range:

The mistake is treating spray transfers as a default rather than a close-range tool. If two enemies are 30 metres away and you already sprayed 12 bullets into the first, transferring the tail of that spray to the second is a low-percentage play. Reset, let the index drop, re-tap.
One weapon-specific exception worth knowing: semi-automatic and burst-firing weapons pick their recoil index at random for every shot, which means they have no learnable pattern at all. Their recoil is very controllable in exchange. There is no Deagle spray pattern to memorise. There never was.

Rifle by rifle: what you are actually learning
You do not need every pattern. You need two, plus an awareness of the cheap guns.
AK-47 — $2,700, 600 RPM, 30 rounds, 77.5% armor penetration, 215 hu/s. The one pattern every Terrorist must own. Slowest rifle fire rate of the main four, which makes the pattern easier to track than it looks, and the one-shot headshot through armor at any range is why the gun defines the T side.
M4A4 — $2,900, 33 damage, 666 RPM, 30 rounds, 70% armor penetration. The CT default, and $200 cheaper in CS2 than the $3,100 it cost in CS:GO. Faster fire rate than the AK means the pattern arrives quicker and you have less time to correct.
M4A1-S — $2,900, 38 damage, 600 RPM, 20 rounds. Higher per-shot damage, quieter, a much softer pattern — and a 20-round magazine with only 60 reserve rounds in CS2, down from 80 in CS:GO. It also has the harshest damage falloff of the three: a range modifier of 0.94 against the M4A4's 0.97 and the AK's 0.98. Great for holding angles, punishing for spraying through a site.
Galil AR — $1,800, 30 damage, 666 RPM, 35 rounds, 77.5% armor penetration. The force-buy rifle that shares the AK's armor penetration. Worth ten minutes of pattern practice purely because you will hold one on every second eco.
UMP-45 — $1,200, 666 RPM, 25 rounds, 230 hu/s, $600 kill reward. Not a spray-pattern gun. It is a close-range volume weapon that funds your next round. Learn its behaviour by feel, not by pattern.

A practice routine that takes 15 minutes
Long sessions on a spray wall build a skill that does not survive contact with a real duel. Fifteen focused minutes beats an hour of pattern tracing.
Minutes 1 to 4 — pattern, on a wall. AK only. Full 30-round sprays. Do not aim for a group; aim to stay on the vertical line through the transition. Watch shots 5 to 12 specifically.
Minutes 5 to 8 — bursts, on bots. 4-round bursts at chest height, reset fully between bursts. This is where inaccuracy recovery becomes intuitive.
Minutes 9 to 12 — counter-strafe and one-tap. Strafe, stop, one shot to the head, strafe back. Never fire while moving. If you cannot land the tap, you stopped too late.
Minutes 13 to 15 — spray transfers, close only. Two bots, under 15 metres, spray through the first into the second. Close range only, because that is the only range the play is worth making.
Then go play. The pattern is a lookup table you can learn in a week; the counter-strafe and the range discipline take a season, and they are what actually move your rating.

Quick Action Checklist
- Stop moving before you shoot. Movement inaccuracy ignores every mouse skill you have.
- Learn shots 5 to 12 of the AK pattern, not shots 1 to 4. The transition is where sprays die.
- Never crouch as a reaction. It does not reduce recoil and it usually worsens standing accuracy.
- Tap at long range. The first shot of any spray is completely unaffected by recoil.
- Burst 3 to 5 rounds at medium range and let inaccuracy fully recover between bursts.
- Do not re-tap mid-spray at range — the recoil index resumes from where it dropped to, not from zero.
- Counter-strafe with a firm opposite-key tap. CS2 sub-tick preserves exactly when you stopped.
- Stop looking for a Desert Eagle pattern. Semi-auto weapons randomise the recoil index every shot.
- Save spray transfers for under 15 metres.
- Practise 15 minutes with intent rather than an hour on a spray wall.
