Crimson Desert Armor Guide: Refinement, Sets and Stats

The weapons guide covered the six slots you swing. This covers the five you wear — with the actual Defense and Attack numbers from +0 to +10, the material bill at every step, the 30 Abyss Artifacts a full loadout quietly costs you, and why the tier badge on a piece does not predict its defence.

Your boots have an attack stat

That is not a typo and it is not a rounding error. Ashad Plate Boots, a mid-tier craftable pair, list Attack 10 at +0 and Attack 34 at +10. The matching gloves go 11 to 35. Those are numbers on the same stat line the weapons in our weapons guide are rated on, where the standout named picks top out at Attack 41. And they are sitting on two armour slots, not in the weapon menu.

Crimson Desert has no character level pushing your damage up. Your stats are your gear, which the weapons guide already said. What it did not say is that half your gear is the stuff you never open the menu for.

All numbers below are read off the Crimson Desert Database, which is datamined from game build 1.18.01 and last refreshed August 16, 2026. The live build as this goes up is 1.18.02, a hotfix dated the same day whose four fixes cover the camp resources UI, a silver reset in one quest, a movement animation, and a shop lockup — nothing that touches equipment. So the gear data is current, not stale.

What you can wear, and how much of it exists

The database splits armour into six buckets. The proportions are the story:

CategoryEntries
Damaged Gear1,637
Armor (body)144
Headgear124
Cloak99
Footwear89
Gloves81
Total2,174

Accessories are counted separately and there are only 70 of them: 29 necklaces, 19 earrings, 16 rings, 5 pairs of glasses and exactly 1 mask. There is also a Special Equipment shelf of 322 items, split into 120 Unique Armor, 115 Boss Drops, 58 Abyss Gear and 29 Unique Weapons.

Strip out the Damaged Gear — more on that below, because it is not wearable — and the Armor category's wearable pool is 537 pieces across five slots. That is a smaller number than the 2,174 headline suggests, and it is the number worth planning around.

One caveat on that 537: it is the Armor category only. Standout pieces are filed elsewhere in the database and are not counted in it — the 120 Unique Armor entries and 115 Boss Drops sit under Special Equipment, and the Armor of Loyal Friendship used later in this guide is filed under Collectibles → Contribution Goods. Treat 537 as a floor for what you can put on, not a ceiling.

One set, five slots, every number

The cleanest way to see what a slot is actually worth is to take one complete set and read all five pieces. Here is the Ashad Plate set — Tier 3, craftable at a blacksmith, named in-game for "Ashad, an orc wanderer and freesword of the Crimson Desert."

SlotPieceDefense +0Defense +10Attack +0Attack +10
BodyAshad Plate Armor441
HeadAshad Plate Helm221
FeetAshad Plate Boots4211034
HandsAshad Plate Gloves2191135
CloakAshad Plate Cloak112

Three things fall out of that table.

Body armour is worth roughly two of anything else. 41 Defense at +10 against 21 for the helm and boots. If you are refining one piece, refine the chest.

Gloves and boots carry Attack; the other three slots do not. That holds across every piece pulled for this guide — the five Ashad pieces, the Tier 5 Armor of Loyal Friendship, the Golden Greed and Schtump plate helms, and the three disguise pieces below. None of them lists an Attack value unless it is hand or foot gear. I have not opened all 537 entries, so read it as the pattern the data shows rather than a law. On those two slots a refinement level moves an offensive stat as well as a defensive one, which is a different value calculation from the other three.

The cloak is the weakest defensive slot and the most interesting one anyway. 12 Defense at +10 is a third of the chest. But the Ashad cloak also carries Fire Resistance and a Stamina Consumption Reduction of -4%, which widens to -6% at +5 and -8% at +10. Stamina is the movement budget the combat guide is built around, so a cloak is a mobility item that happens to have a defence number on it.

One footnote on that last row: the database's refinement table for the Ashad Plate Cloak starts at +1, not +0. Every other piece I pulled starts at +0. I have used the +1 figure rather than guessing at a baseline that is not published.

Added up, the five Ashad pieces go from 13 Defense unrefined to 114 at maximum. Roughly nine tenths of your armour value is refinement, not acquisition.

Refinement is where the defence is

Refinement runs +0 to +10 on armour, at a blacksmith, paid in materials rather than silver — the same system the weapons guide describes for swords. What the weapons guide does not give you is the curve. Here is the full ladder for the Ashad Plate Armor, the chest piece:

LevelDefenseMaterials required
+04
+16none listed
+28Iron Ore x3
+310Iron Ore x4, Copper Ore x2
+414Iron Ore x5, Copper Ore x4
+518Iron Ore x6, Copper Ore x6, Large Bone x1, Abyss Artifact x1
+622Iron Ore x8, Copper Ore x8, Large Bone x3, Abyss Artifact x1
+726Iron Ore x10, Copper Ore x10, Large Bone x5, Abyss Artifact x1
+830Iron Ore x15, Copper Ore x15, Large Bone x8, Bismuth Ore x2, Abyss Artifact x1
+934Iron Ore x25, Copper Ore x20, Large Bone x12, Bismuth Ore x6, Abyss Artifact x1
+1041Aeserion's Scale x1, Abyss Artifact x1

Total bill to take one chest piece from stock to maximum: 76 Iron Ore, 65 Copper Ore, 29 Large Bone, 8 Bismuth Ore, 6 Abyss Artifacts and 1 Aeserion's Scale.

Two of those are why you should be hunting on the way to objectives rather than riding past. Large Bone's own tooltip says it plainly — "used as an enhancement material for weapons and armor," obtainable "from carcasses of boar, bears, and other animals" — and 29 of them is a lot of boar.

The in-game item tooltip for Large Bone, a crafting and refinement material in Crimson Desert

The first step is free and the last one is a boss

The two ends of that ladder are strange in useful ways.

+1 lists no materials at all. On every piece I pulled — nine of them, across all five slots — the +1 row is blank while +2 starts charging. If you have picked up a piece of armour and not touched it, you are one free step below where you could be.

+10 stops being a grind and becomes a fetch quest. The final step drops the ore and hides entirely and asks for exactly two things: Aeserion's Scale x1 and Abyss Artifact x1. The scale's description reads "A steel scale obtained from Aeserion, the Great Serpent," and it is filed as a Crafting and Refinement Material. Every one of the nine pieces I checked — the five Ashad pieces, the Tier 5 Armor of Loyal Friendship, the Bear Hide Cloak, the Alpha Wolf Helm and the Bandit Cloth Armor — asks for one Aeserion's Scale at +10 and nothing else besides the artifact.

Which means a full five-slot loadout at +10 needs five scales from one named boss. That is the gate, not the ore.

Abyss Artifacts are the real price tag

Look back at the ladder. An Abyss Artifact is required at every level from +5 to +10 — six of them per piece. Five slots, and a full +10 loadout costs 30 Abyss Artifacts.

Now read what an Abyss Artifact actually is, from its own tooltip: "Can be used in the Skills menu to enhance skills, or taken to a blacksmith to refine equipment."

That is one currency for two systems. Every artifact you spend pushing a helm from +8 to +9 is an artifact not spent on a skill. It also carries a higher vendor price than the finished armour it upgrades: an artifact sells for 10.83, while the whole Tier 5 Armor of Loyal Friendship sells for 9, the Ashad Plate Helm for 2.01 and a damaged breastplate for 1.33. (The refinement materials are not all cheap either — a single Large Bone sells for 23.)

The practical read: below +5 refinement is cheap and paid in ore you trip over. From +5 it is paid in the same resource as your build. The Abyss Cores guide covers the socket half of that economy, including why body armour holds three sockets and cloaks hold none — the Ashad helm lists 1 socket, the gloves and boots 2 each, and neither cloak I pulled lists a socket line at all.

The tier badge does not predict defence

Items carry a tier icon from 1 to 5, and it is tempting to read it as a power rating. Two chest pieces say otherwise.

PieceTierDefense +0Defense +10Where it comes from
Ashad Plate Armor3441Blacksmith craft; Odeck Smuggler - Craig
Armor of Loyal Friendship5441Delesyia Contribution Office - Fennheim; Marni's contribution store

Same starting Defense, same maximum Defense, and the same material bill at every rung — Iron Ore, Copper Ore, Large Bone, Bismuth Ore in identical quantities. The Tier 5 piece is gated behind Delesyian contribution ("Only those who have contributed to Delesyia are permitted to possess it," per its description) and the Tier 3 piece is a blacksmith craft. On these two, the tier is telling you about acquisition, not about defence.

Two pieces is not a law. It is enough to stop reading the badge as a stat.

Your armour carries abilities too

Refinement numbers are only half of what a piece does. The Ashad set ships pre-socketed, and the effects are not cosmetic:

  • Helm — pre-socketed with Vigor I, listed as stamina regeneration +2%. It also carries passives labelled PlateHelm Audio, OpenableHelm and, most usefully, Daze Immunity.
  • Gloves — pre-socketed with Tempest of Destruction, an active bound to F + right mouse, plus Aegis I at Damage Reduction 1.
  • Boots — pre-socketed with Vitality I (Health +0.2 per second) and Ascent I (climb speed multiplier 2%).

Daze Immunity on a helmet is the one to notice, given that the combat guide's entire defensive loop runs on landing a parry on time. And note that Aegis I's "Damage Reduction" is listed as its own line, separate from Defense — the two are not the same stat in the database's own presentation.

Pearl Abyss's own 1.17.00 patch notes back this up from the other direction: one of that patch's fixes was "an issue where the unique effects of special headgear did not activate properly in specific situations." Headgear having unique effects is not a datamining artefact.

The only set bonuses I found are disguises

Wearing a matching set does not appear to do anything by itself. The five Ashad pieces carry no set-bonus block. The pieces flagged Unique Armor / Set Item do, and all three I opened resolve to the same kind of effect — a disguise:

SetPieces in the setPieces neededBonus
Bear DisguiseWhite Bear Helm, Boss Bear Hat, Bear Hide Cloak1Bear Disguise
Wolf DisguiseSilver Fang Helm, Alpha Wolf Helm, Wolf Cloak1Wolf Disguise
Bandit DisguiseBandit Cloth Armor, Bandit Cloth Cloak2Bandit Disguise

The piece count that triggers the bonus is not uniform, which is the part worth carrying away: Bear and Wolf fire on one piece, Bandit needs two. Chasing all three pieces of the Bear set for the disguise is wasted effort.

Their drop sources are worth knowing before you go looking. The Bear Hide Cloak drops at 10% from seven separate bear entities — three listed simply as Bear, plus Grizzly Bear, Black Bear, Captured Bear and the rideable Clawed Bear. The Alpha Wolf Helm drops at 3%, and not from a wolf: from a Mask Artisan. Bandit Cloth Armor is 2% from a Bandit, and is also stocked by the House Serkis Equipment Shop - Grakon, which is a much shorter route than farming a 2% drop.

The unique pieces also refine, and they refine on a flatter curve. The Bear Hide Cloak runs Defense 6 to 18 across +0 to +10 and only picks up its Movement Speed 1 at the final step; the Bandit Cloth Armor carries Movement Speed 1 from +0 all the way up. Cloth and leather refine on Cloth Piece, Fleece, Ivory and hides rather than ore.

Damaged Gear is three quarters of the list

1,637 of the 2,174 armour entries — 75% — are Damaged Gear, and none of it can be worn. The in-game description is unambiguous: "Armor that is completely broken and can no longer serve its function. Though it cannot be equipped, it can be sold at a shop or donated to the camp."

Damaged pieces carry no tier, no refinement track and no stats. Acklass Cloth Armor sells for 1.33. That is the whole item.

The "donated to the camp" clause is the one to read carefully, because it is easy to over-read. Donated items feed the camp's provisions — the stock that pays for comrade dispatch missions — and provisions are tracked in separate buckets, of which Funds is only one. Pearl Abyss's 1.18.00 notes, published August 15, moved research onto that Funds bucket: "Changed the resource required for research from silvers to camp funds." But camp funds are raised by donating silver to Carl or by running shield-icon dispatch missions, per the Knowledge and Research guide — not by handing over broken armour. Donating a damaged breastplate still helps the camp; it does not pay for a research node.

What I could not verify

Five things I went looking for and did not find, listed because a guide that hides its gaps is worse than one that admits them:

  • What Defense converts to. There is no published formula for how a Defense number becomes damage reduction. I have reported the values, not what they feel like.
  • What a disguise does. The set bonus is named "Bear Disguise" and nothing I opened describes the effect. The weapons guide notes you need a Mask to steal Caliburn's Mercy, which points at access and stealth, but that is an inference and I am flagging it as one.
  • Whether Aeserion is rematchable. Pearl Abyss's 1.13.00 notes refer to Memory Fragment locations for "certain rematchable bosses," so rematches exist as a system. Whether Aeserion is on that list, and therefore whether five scales for five slots is farmable, I could not confirm.
  • Whether the +1 blank is a free step or a data gap. It is blank on all nine pieces I pulled, which is consistent, but consistent is not the same as confirmed.
  • How glove and boot Attack combines with weapon Attack. The stat is listed on both slots and it scales with refinement; whether it adds to your weapon's number, feeds an unarmed moveset, or does something else is not published, and the database does not say. Treat it as a reason to refine those slots, not as a figure to add to a sword.

Quick Action Checklist

  1. Refine the chest first. Body armour is worth roughly two of any other slot — 41 Defense at +10 against 21 for a helm.
  2. Take everything to +1 immediately. The database lists no material cost for that step on any piece checked.
  3. Refine gloves and boots second. They are the two slots that carry an Attack stat on every piece checked here, so a level there moves two stats instead of one.
  4. Stop at +4 while artifacts are scarce. Refinement is ore-cheap up to +4 and costs an Abyss Artifact at every level from +5.
  5. Decide deliberately between gear and skills. The same Abyss Artifact enhances skills in the Skills menu or refines equipment at a blacksmith. Thirty of them is a full +10 loadout.
  6. Hunt on the way past. 29 Large Bone go into one chest piece, and Large Bone comes off boar and bear carcasses.
  7. Do not read the tier badge as a power rating. A Tier 3 Ashad Plate Armor and a Tier 5 Armor of Loyal Friendship share the same 4-to-41 Defense curve and the same material bill.
  8. Wear one disguise piece, not three. Bear and Wolf fire on a single item; only Bandit wants two.
  9. Buy the Bandit Cloth Armor from House Serkis Equipment Shop - Grakon rather than farming its 2% drop.
  10. Sell or donate Damaged Gear rather than carrying it. It cannot be equipped, it sells for 1.33, and its tooltip offers the camp as the alternative sink. Donating it feeds camp provisions, not the camp funds that now pay for research.

Frequently Asked Questions

Crimson Desert armour refines from +0 to +10 at a blacksmith, paid in gathered materials rather than silver. Using the Ashad Plate Armor chest piece as the worked example, Defense climbs from 4 at +0 to 41 at +10. The +1 step lists no material cost, +2 through +4 cost only Iron Ore and Copper Ore, every level from +5 to +10 additionally costs one Abyss Artifact, and the final +10 step costs only Aeserion's Scale x1 plus one Abyss Artifact. The full bill for one chest piece is 76 Iron Ore, 65 Copper Ore, 29 Large Bone, 8 Bismuth Ore, 6 Abyss Artifacts and 1 Aeserion's Scale.
