Illumineer's Quest: The Great Hunny Rescue - Lorcana's Co-op Box, Explained

Ravensburger opened Gen Con 2026 with a Winnie the Pooh co-op box instead of a competitive reveal. Here's what an Illumineer's Quest actually is, what the first two boxes established, and everything confirmed about The Great Hunny Rescue - contents, date, and price included.

The Illumineer's Quest: The Great Hunny Rescue box: Winnie the Pooh in a purple wizard hat and cloak raising a honey-topped staff, with Piglet, Tigger, Rabbit and friends in adventuring gear below him, dark Vine tendrils framing the art, and the callouts A Co-op Adventure and 1-2 players with included decks.

Ravensburger had one slot to open Gen Con 2026 - the Streaming Stage, Thursday, July 30, 10 a.m. ET, simulcast on the official Disney Lorcana Twitch channel - and it didn't spend that slot on a new competitive set or a championship hype reel. It spent it on a live playthrough of a Winnie the Pooh co-op box. Illumineer's Quest: The Great Hunny Rescue made its public debut in Indianapolis this weekend, with early copies on sale at Booth 2001 months ahead of its October 3 wide release.

Timing note up front: I'm writing this on August 1, day three of the four-day show, which is sold out for the third straight year at roughly 70,000 attendees a day. Everything below is what Ravensburger has actually published - the July 28 Gen Con announcement and the product reveal from its GAMA Expo presentation this spring - plus what the first two Illumineer's Quest boxes established. Where a detail hasn't been confirmed, I say so instead of guessing.

The debut: live from Indianapolis

The pitch, straight from Ravensburger's announcement: you and your fellow Illumineers traverse multiple chambers to find the source of the Vine's power and rescue Piglet from the Hundred Acre Wood gone wrong. The Vine is the same corrupting threat the current set, Attack of the Vine!, is built around - this box isn't a side story, it's the payoff. Star City Games' coverage of the reveal adds the stakes: Ravensburger has said the quest serves as the conclusion to the game's current story arc.

Beyond the Thursday stream, the Gen Con rollout is deliberately wide: ticketholders can buy an early copy at Ravensburger's booth all weekend (under the same daily-allocation, one-per-attendee rules as everything else on the menu), and a limited number of first-look playthrough events run throughout the show. If you want the full convention picture - all 118 Lorcana sessions, the Stitch participation promo, the Format Coconut open beta - that's covered in our separate Gen Con 2026 report. This post is about the product itself, because "co-op Lorcana" deserves a proper explanation.

What an Illumineer's Quest actually is

An Illumineer's Quest is Lorcana against the machine. Instead of two players racing each other to 20 lore, your table plays against a villain who runs on autopilot: a dedicated, gold-backed scenario deck flips its own cards, deploys its own threats, and escalates on a schedule, no human required. You win as a team or lose as a team.

Three things separate it from regular head-to-head Lorcana, and they've been consistent across the line since 2024:

  • Simultaneous turns. Player turns happen at the same time, so the table talks constantly - who inks what, who blocks, whose glimmer gets buffed. It plays closer to a cooperative board game than a tournament round.
  • The villain cheats, openly. Scenario decks use card types and effects that don't exist in normal play - the villain doesn't build a fair 60-card deck, it runs a script designed to pressure everyone at once.
  • Difficulty is a dial. Every box ships with selectable difficulty, so the same product is a gentle on-ramp for a new player and a genuine puzzle for an enfranchised one.

The scenario decks in all three boxes are exactly 50 cards, the two included player decks are always tournament-standard 60s, and every box so far has carried a $59.99 US price tag where a price has been published. Ravensburger found a formula and has iterated on it rather than reinvented it - which makes the changes in each new box the interesting part.

Deep Trouble set the template

The Disney Lorcana card Ursula - Sea Witch Queen from Ursula's Return, a 7-ink Amethyst legendary with 4 Strength and 7 Willpower, showing a crowned Ursula holding the golden trident while Flotsam and Jetsam coil beside her.

The first Illumineer's Quest, Deep Trouble, shipped alongside Ursula's Return - hobby stores and Disney Parks on May 17, 2024, mass retail on May 31 - at $59.99. The box: an oversized Ursula card, her 50-card scenario deck, two prebuilt 60-card player decks built around Yen Sid and Mulan, two oversized double-sided battleground cards, a paper playmat, a draw token, lore trackers, 29 damage counters, and a sealed secret victory card you only open after beating her.

The structure was clean. Ursula's turn runs itself: ready her cards, resolve effects, process her row left to right, draw and play based on difficulty. The four battlegrounds - from an easy first encounter up to an extreme mode - set how hard she hits, and per TheGamer's guide the win condition asks every player at the table to individually bank 20 lore before Ursula's own lore total ends the game or someone's deck runs out. That "everyone must get there" clause is the smart bit of design: nobody gets carried, and the table's weakest board is everyone's problem.

The sealed reward card was a confetti-foil Half Hexwell Crown - half of a broken artifact, which turned out to be a plot device, not a trinket.

Palace Heist upgraded the hardware

The Disney Lorcana card Jafar - High Sultan of Lorcana from Reign of Jafar, a 5-ink dual-ink super rare with 4 Strength and 4 Willpower, showing Jafar enthroned in ornate armor between golden serpent statues, with the DARK POWER questing ability.

The second box, Palace Heist, arrived with Reign of Jafar - hobby stores May 30, 2025, everywhere else June 6 - and picked up exactly where that crown left off. The premise, from Ravensburger's own product copy: a Jafar glimmer has reforged the broken Hexwell Crown and transformed into the Supreme Sorcerer of Lorcana, and your team has to sneak into his stronghold and snatch it back before he becomes all-powerful.

Mechanically it kept the skeleton - 50-card scenario deck (set code Q2, underlings, items, and obstacles included), two purpose-built player decks, four difficulty levels, solo up to four players - and improved everything around it. The flimsy folding playmat became a durable one, the packaging became a reusable board-game-style box with individual deck boxes, and the objective got a heist twist: per the Mushu Report wiki's documentation of the rules, reaching your lore target isn't enough - someone on the team has to actually be holding the stolen Crown. Reviewers at Screen Rant called it the high-quality version of what Deep Trouble sketched out, and the reward card this time was an alternate-art Archimedes - Resourceful Owl.

Two boxes in, the pattern is legible: each Illumineer's Quest advances the storyline the competitive sets are telling, and each one invests in replayability a little harder than the last.

What's confirmed about The Great Hunny Rescue

Here's everything Ravensburger has published about box three, first shown at its GAMA Expo 2026 presentation in Kentucky and dated at Gen Con. Release: October 3, 2026. Price: $59.99 US - same sticker as Deep Trouble. Contents, per the reveal:

  • 1 Vine scenario deck (50 cards) with storage box
  • 10 Vine Tendril cards
  • 2 player decks (60 cards each) with storage boxes
  • 6 Encounter cards
  • 1 prize pack (5 cards)
  • 30 tokens
  • 1 game board
  • Game rulebook

Read that list against the first two boxes and the design shift jumps out. There's no oversized villain card, because there's no villain character - the Vine is a force, not a face, and it comes with its own new hardware: ten Tendril cards and six Encounter cards, component types neither earlier quest had. The playmat is gone entirely, replaced by an actual game board, which fits the announcement's language about traversing multiple chambers - Deep Trouble and Palace Heist were pitched battles on a single battleground, and this reads like a crawl through territory instead. And the sealed single reward card has grown into a five-card prize pack.

The box lists 1-2 players with the included decks. Both prior quests scaled to four when players brought their own standard decks, and Star City Games' coverage confirms four difficulty levels are back - but Ravensburger hasn't published the full rules yet, so whether four-player support returns, what the Encounter cards actually do, and what's inside that prize pack all remain open questions as of August 1. The cover art carries one more tell: Winnie the Pooh front and center in his Hunny Wizard getup - wizard hat, cloak, staff crowned with a honey dipper - with the rest of the Hundred Acre Wood crew behind him in full adventuring gear.

The Disney Lorcana card Winnie the Pooh - Hunny Wizard from Fabled, a 5-ink Amethyst common with 5 Strength and 5 Willpower, showing Pooh in purple wizard robes sitting atop a honey-dripping beehive shaped like a robe, holding a honey-dipper staff while bees and ribbons of honey swirl around him.

That's not a new invention for the box. Hunny Wizard Pooh debuted as a card in Fabled back in August 2025 - a 5-ink Amethyst 5/5 whose flavor text notes he'd always felt a kinship with honey. The co-op box is promoting an existing glimmer to protagonist.

The Hunny party is already in the card pool

The smartest thing about this product is how much groundwork the current set already laid. I ran the count on the Lorcast database: Attack of the Vine! contains fifteen cards with "Hunny" in the name, and together they're an unambiguous RPG party - Tigger the Hunny Barbarian, Rabbit the Hunny Paladin, Roo the Hunny Rogue, Kanga the Hunny Bard, Lumpy the Hunny Druid, Owl the Hunny Ranger, Eeyore the Hunny Scholar, Gopher the Hunny Cook, Christopher Robin the Hunny Sage as the set's Amethyst legendary, Pooh himself upgraded to Hunny Archmage, plus a Magical Hunny Staff, a Big Book of Hunny, and a Hunny Campsite location to camp at.

And then there's the victim:

The Disney Lorcana card Piglet - Hunny Mage Apprentice from Attack of the Vine!, a 1-ink Sapphire common with 2 Strength and 2 Willpower, showing a nervous Piglet in a blue mage robe holding a glowing honey-dipper wand while dark thorny Vine tendrils coil around him.

Piglet - Hunny Mage Apprentice, a 1-ink Sapphire common, literally depicted mid-abduction: tiny mage robe, glowing wand, dark tendrils closing in from the edges of the frame. His flavor text is Christopher Robin telling him that being scared doesn't mean you're not brave. The card pool set up the kidnapping; the co-op box sells you the rescue. As connected-product storytelling goes, a one-cost common foreshadowing a $59.99 box release three months out is genuinely tight work.

It also means the box's theme has competitive-play roots. These fifteen cards are Core-legal right now - the Hunny package isn't quarantined inside the co-op product the way, say, a board game spin-off would be. Play the quest, like the characters, and the same glimmers are waiting in boosters.

Who this box is actually for

Three years and three boxes in, the Illumineer's Quest line has a clear job, and it isn't serving the tournament grinder. It's the product you put on the table with a partner who would never sit across from you in a competitive match - co-op removes the feels-bad of stomping a newer player, simultaneous turns remove the downtime, and the difficulty dial means the box survives past the first weekend. Ravensburger's own Gen Con announcement frames it as a bridge for tabletop gamers, TCG fans, and Disney fans to play together, and choosing this product to open the biggest tabletop convention in North America - a show with 500-plus exhibiting companies' worth of board gamers walking the floor - says the company believes the bridge carries real traffic.

The honest caveats: nobody outside Ravensburger and the Gen Con show floor has the full rulebook yet, so nobody can tell you whether the chamber-crawl structure actually delivers, whether the Vine is a smarter villain than a script-following Ursula, or whether four players fit at the table. Early copies are circulating from Booth 2001 this weekend, so real reviews will land well before October 3. What's already knowable is the trajectory: Deep Trouble proved the concept, Palace Heist fixed the components, and The Great Hunny Rescue is swinging at structure - a board, chambers, a faceless villain, and the end of a story arc the competitive sets have spent a year building. For a product line that started as a curiosity box, that's a real evolution.

Wide release is October 3, 2026, at $59.99. The Hundred Acre Wood has been arming itself all set long. Now we get to answer for Piglet.
