Resident Evil 4 Remake Story and Ending Explained
Full spoilers. The Resident Evil 4 remake story chapter by chapter, who is really working for whom, what the Amber is, the four beats Capcom rewrote from 2005, and what Ada's post-credits call to Wesker sets up.

Full spoilers from here on, including the post-credits scene and Separate Ways.
Capcom's own Resident Evil 4 site promises "a reimagined storyline," and that line is doing real work. The bones are 2005's: Leon, the president's kidnapped daughter, a Spanish village owned by a parasite cult. But who kills Luis, who Krauser was to Leon, how Mike dies and why Ada crosses Wesker all changed. With the remake on Switch 2 since October 16, here is the whole thing in one place: the setup, all 16 chapters, the cast's real allegiances, the ending and the 2005 rewrites.
The chapter detail comes from the Resident Evil Wiki's plot and chapter pages, the character descriptions from Capcom's official site, and the Amber from the game's own file text.
The setup in 60 seconds
It is autumn 2004, six years after Raccoon City. Leon S. Kennedy, a rookie cop on that night in 1998, is now an agent working directly under the US president, and the wiki's plot page has him trained in a secret government program under Major Jack Krauser. Ashley Graham, the president's daughter, has been kidnapped, and the trail ends at a remote village in Spain.
The villagers are Ganados, people infected with Las Plagas, a parasite that makes its host hostile and obedient. The cult behind it is Los Iluminados, which Capcom's character page calls "a powerful religious cult that has long existed in the region," and its leader is Osmund Saddler. By the end of Chapter 1, the village chief, Bitores Méndez, has injected Leon with a Plaga egg, and by Chapter 5 Ashley is coughing up blood too. So the rescue is really a race: get both parasites out before Saddler can control them.
All 16 chapters, in order
The remake runs 16 numbered chapters: the village (1 to 6), Salazar's castle and the mines beneath it (7 to 12) and the cult's island (13 to 16). The fights themselves are in the boss guide; this is what happens around them.
| Ch | Where | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Village | Leon's two police escorts are killed and the villagers turn on him until a church bell calls them off. He frees Luis Serra from a body bag, and Méndez knocks Leon out and injects him with a Plaga egg. |
| 2 | Village | Leon wakes chained to Luis, escapes, and hears Ashley may be at the church. At his manor, Méndez strangles Leon and says his blood "has accepted the gift," until a shooter outside the window hits Méndez. |
| 3 | Lake | Hunnigan's background check says Luis is a former Umbrella researcher. The church key is across the lake. Leon kills Del Lago with harpoons, coughs blood and blacks out. |
| 4 | Village | Saddler appears in Leon's visions. Leon gets the church insignia, kills an El Gigante in the quarry and finds Ashley inside the church as a mob closes in. |
| 5 | Village | Heading for a helicopter pickup, Leon and Ashley end up holding a cabin with Luis. Ashley coughs blood; Luis explains Las Plagas and says the parasite can still come out, because his did. |
| 6 | Village | Ada Wong, missing since Raccoon City, meets Luis about something called the Amber. The storm grounds the chopper, Méndez chases Leon and Ashley into a slaughterhouse, and Leon kills him. They head for the castle. |
| 7 | Castle | Ramón Salazar, eighth head of the family that rules the region, demands Ashley. In the courtyard her Plaga takes over and she goes for Leon with his own knife, then a gate drops between them and she runs. |
| 8 | Castle | Hunnigan's line is cut. Leon and Ada meet face to face for the first time since Raccoon City, and she tells him to give up on Ashley. He brings down an armored El Gigante with a cannon and finds Ashley again. |
| 9 | Castle | A trap cages Leon. Ashley, playable alone, finds the key to free him, then Salazar's servant, the Verdugo, carries her off. |
| 10 | Castle and below | Zealots force Ashley to drink a black liquid in the throne room, and Salazar has Leon thrown into a pit. Leon gets out of an underground lab with the Verdugo hunting him and finds Luis waiting with Plaga suppressants. |
| 11 | Mines | Leon and Luis kill two El Gigantes and ride the minecarts. Luis admits he researched the Plaga for the cult. At the top of the lift Krauser, Leon's presumed-dead mentor, stabs Luis, takes the Amber and wins a knife fight with Leon. Luis dies after giving Leon the key to his lab. |
| 12 | Castle | Salazar hands Ashley to Krauser. Leon kills Salazar's mutated form, watches Krauser take Ashley to the island by boat, and Ada turns up with a key to another boat. |
| 13 | Island | On the crossing, Leon asks Ada whether she is just using him again. She doesn't answer. Leon gets past the Regeneradores, frees Ashley and gives her the last suppressant as his own wears off. |
| 14 | Island | In the Amber storeroom, Saddler takes control of Ashley and orders her to shoot Leon; she hits his two followers instead, and he takes her away. Krauser's files explain his grudge, and Leon kills him in the ruins. |
| 15 | Island | Mike's gunship clears a path until Novistadors bring it down. Saddler nearly takes Leon over in the sanctuary before Ada opens fire. Leon carries Ashley to Luis's lab, removes her Plaga and collapses. |
| 16 | Island | Ashley removes Leon's Plaga. Saddler uses a captured Ada as bait, and Leon kills him with help from a rocket launcher Ada throws down. Ada takes the Amber, and Leon and Ashley escape on her water scooter as explosions tear through the island. |
Chapter 9 is where you take control of Ashley, and the Ashley guide covers it.
Who is working for whom

Several of these people are not working for who Leon thinks they are, and the plot only makes sense once you know who answers to whom:
| Character | Really answers to | What they want | How they end |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leon S. Kennedy | The US president | Ashley home alive | Survives; Plaga removed in Chapter 16 |
| Ashley Graham | — | To get home | Survives; Plaga removed in Chapter 15 |
| Luis Serra | Ex-Umbrella, then the cult's Plaga research; secretly dealing with Ada | Out of the cult, with the Amber as his price | Stabbed by Krauser, Chapter 11 |
| Ada Wong | Albert Wesker | The Amber | Leaves with it, then turns on Wesker after the credits |
| Jack Krauser | Saddler | Power, and payback for Operation Javier | Killed by Leon, Chapter 14 |
| Bitores Méndez | Saddler | Leon and Ashley captured | Killed by Leon, Chapter 6 |
| Ramón Salazar | Saddler | Ashley delivered to the cult | Killed by Leon, Chapter 12 |
| Osmund Saddler | Himself | The Plaga spread worldwide, through the president's daughter first | Killed by Leon, Chapter 16 |
| Mike | Hunnigan, who sent him | Air support for Leon | Killed when Novistadors down his helicopter, Chapter 15 |
Luis is the hinge. Capcom's character page only calls him a mysterious man who seems to know where Ashley is, "but can he be trusted...?" The wiki's account of his history answers that: he quit Umbrella, went home to the village, and ended up running Plaga research for the cult before learning what Saddler wanted it for. He then cut a deal with Ada and her employer: the Amber and its research in exchange for getting him out. That is why Chapter 6 opens with him meeting Ada, right after he leaves Leon and Ashley. His last act is saving Leon. In Chapter 11 he shoots the knife out of Krauser's hand, and the lab key he hands over is how both parasites come out.
Krauser is the betrayal. Capcom describes him as a former soldier who "developed a bond" with Leon after Leon became an agent. Per the wiki, he was the only survivor of Operation Javier in 2002 and blames the US government for abandoning his unit, and he helped plan Ashley's kidnapping. When Leon tells him in Chapter 14 that the cult won't get him revenge, Krauser answers that it gave him what he values most: power. The blade Leon finishes him with is the Fighting Knife, which Leon keeps; the best knife guide covers what it is worth.
What the Amber actually is
Luis, Ada, Krauser and Saddler are all after one object, and Luis's own file in the castle explains why. The Amber is a Plaga specimen he found gathering dust in the cult's storeroom. Small and dormant, it carries the same organ as the "dominant species" Plaga, which his file says had only ever been seen in Saddler. Luis's verdict: "When fully developed, the Amber may rival, or perhaps even surpass, Saddler's power."
That dominant organ is the whole power structure. The wiki's Chapter 14 page says anyone carrying the parasite is under Saddler's control because his body houses the dominant version, which is why Ashley can be turned into a gun pointed at Leon. Luis's file sees the Amber as the only way to counter him. In the mines, Luis tells Leon the cult dug its Plagas out of ancient amber deposits, and in the castle Leon learns that Salazar's family had kept them buried until Ramón unearthed them.
The main handoffs, in order:
- Saddler confiscates the Amber from Luis, who gets it back and hides it before the cult catches him.
- Krauser takes it off the dying Luis in Chapter 11 and, per the wiki, hands it to Saddler on the island.
- Ada picks it up after Saddler dies in Chapter 16.
The ending, explained

Leon kills Saddler on the docks, and the wiki's plot page says every Ganado dies in a seizure when he does. Ada picks up the Amber and tells Leon that she and Luis had an arrangement, which the lab files Leon has just read back up, then offers him a ride on her helicopter. He turns it down; this is where they go separate ways. She leaves him the key to her water scooter, and he and Ashley ride out as the island goes up. Hunnigan, whose line was cut back in Chapter 8, finally reaches him.
Then comes the post-credits scene. On the helicopter, Ada asks Wesker what he plans to do with the sample. His answer, per the wiki's plot and Chapter 16 pages, is a new order that could cost billions of lives so that one can survive. Ada puts a gun on the pilot and orders a change of course.
It is the same trade Leon described to her on the boat in Chapter 13, where saving one life costs many others, scaled up to the planet. The game stops there. Neither wiki summary, of the main ending or of Separate Ways, says where she takes the Amber.
What Separate Ways adds
Ada's seven-chapter campaign covers the same days from her side, and Capcom pitches it as "filling in unanswered questions posed in the main story." The story beats it adds, per the wiki:
- She was there first. Ada rang the church bell that saved Leon in Chapter 1 and shot Méndez off him in Chapter 2.
- She was infected too. Pesanta, a creature serving Salazar, plants part of itself in her, and she hallucinates until she kills it. Capcom's own synopsis calls it "an unknown threat that is devouring her from within."
- Wesker was ready to kill Leon. The override device he gave Ada started the island's self-destruct with Leon and Ashley still on it, and she plugged in a USB stick to delay the blast and shrink it.
- Wesker had a backup. The final scene shows him on a ship nearby with Krauser's body, collected to extract its Plaga in case Ada failed. The island's destruction came in under half, and he lets her go.
That last point means Wesker does not leave empty-handed, whatever Ada does with the Amber. The Separate Ways guide covers how the campaign plays.
Four things the remake rewrote

If you know 2005, these are the beats that will catch you out. Both columns come from the Resident Evil Wiki's plot pages for the two games:
| Beat | 2005 original | 2023 remake |
|---|---|---|
| Luis's death | Saddler impales him in the castle and takes the sample | Krauser stabs him after the mines and takes the Amber |
| Krauser and Leon | Old partners from his government service, Krauser believed killed in a crash two years earlier | The major who trained Leon, presumed dead |
| Mike's death | Shot down by a Ganado with a rocket launcher | Brought down by a swarm of Novistadors |
| Ada and Wesker | Her Separate Ways report says she was only posing as Wesker's agent for a rival organization, and will send him a different sample | She turns on him in a post-credits call, after he describes a plan that could kill billions |
The Luis change reshapes the middle of the game. In 2005 he dies in the castle; in the remake he fights beside Leon through the mines, and his lab is where the story resolves. The gameplay changes, from Ashley's health bar to the knife, are tabled in the beginner guide.
How far Steam players get
Steam has an achievement for each of six main-story bosses, so its global stats show how many players reach each point. These are the figures on October 23, 2026:
| Boss | Chapter | Steam achievement | Steam players with it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Del Lago | 3 | Harpoon Hurler | 76.6% |
| Bitores Méndez | 6 | Grilled Big Cheese | 71.0% |
| Verdugo | 10 | Wave Goodbye, Right Hand | 37.7% |
| Ramón Salazar | 12 | No Thanks, Bro! | 63.5% |
| Jack Krauser | 14 | You Used to Be a Good Guy | 61.1% |
| Osmund Saddler | 16 | You're Small Time! | 60.2% |
| Saddler, in Separate Ways | — | Had Enough of Preachers | 26.7% |
Four things fall out of that:
- About three in five Steam players have seen the ending. 60.2% beat Saddler.
- After the lake, the castle loses the most players. The 23.4% of Steam players with no Del Lago kill is the biggest gap on the table, but past that, the drop from Méndez to Salazar is 7.5 points, more than the rest of the village (5.6 from Del Lago to Méndez) or the island (3.3 from Salazar to Saddler). Of players who beat Salazar, about 95% go on to beat Saddler.
- The Verdugo's 37.7% is not a wall. Of these six bosses, it is the one the story lets you skip: the wiki's Chapter 10 page says Leon can take the elevator out without killing it.
- About 8% have finished only on Assisted. Promising Agent, for a clear on Standard or higher, sits at 51.8%, 8.4 points under the Saddler kill. The challenges guide covers the difficulty awards.
Separate Ways is a paid add-on, so its 26.7% is not directly comparable with the main-story rows.
Quick Action Checklist
- Stay through the credits. Ada's call to Wesker is the scene that turns her against him.
- Read the files. Luis's Amber file in the castle, Krauser's documents at the Chapter 14 campsite and the lab files in Chapter 16 fill in the Amber's history, Krauser's grudge and Luis's deal with Ada.
- Play Leon's campaign before Separate Ways. Ada's campaign answers questions the main story asks, including who rang the bell and who shot Méndez.
- Know 2005? Expect Luis, Krauser, Mike and Ada's break with Wesker to play out differently.
- Coming to Leon from Requiem? The games to play before Requiem guide explains where this one fits.
- Want to know if you'll finish? Get past Salazar. About 95% of Steam players who beat him also beat Saddler.
