RE4 Remake Platforms: Every Version and What It Needs

The Resident Evil 4 remake is sold on PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Apple's App Store and, from October 16, the Switch 2 eShop, and the versions are not the same deal. Here is what each one needs to run, what it costs at list, and what it adds or leaves out.

The Resident Evil 4 remake's base game costs $39.99 on Steam and $59.99 to unlock on an iPhone. Nintendo's Switch 2 listing puts four add-ons in its Gold Edition that the Steam, PlayStation and Xbox Gold Editions leave out. VR Mode exists only as a PS5 download, and Digital Foundry's testing found the PS4 version visibly cut down. It is the same remake everywhere, sold as several slightly different deals.

Here is every version as of October 11, 2026: what each needs to run, what it costs at list, and what it adds or leaves out. The Switch 2 version goes on sale digitally on October 16, so its row comes from Nintendo's store listing, not from play.

The release dates are Wikipedia's, and the hardware lines come from each store's own requirements. The sections below have the detail.

Two things hold on all seven. Separate Ways is available on each of them, either as a $9.99 add-on or inside Gold Edition. And The Mercenaries costs nothing: Capcom's official site calls it free DLC, Steam and Microsoft's store list it at $0, Capcom's Apple launch release describes it as free DLC, and Nintendo's listing puts it in the Switch 2 bundle. The Separate Ways guide and the Mercenaries guide cover both modes.

Leon Kennedy aiming a silver handgun over his shoulder at two villagers in the Resident Evil 4 remake's village square, one of them hit in the chest, with a fire burning around a wooden post behind them and the ammo counter reading 9/23.

The two consoles it skipped

Xbox One. The remake is on Series X|S and has no Xbox One version. Microsoft's own store lists the game for Xbox Series X|S, tags it Optimized for Xbox Series X|S, and states in its Remake Trilogy bundle text that Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition is not compatible with Xbox One. The same note says that Microsoft Store copy is not compatible with Windows either, so a PC player buys on Steam. Wikipedia's platform list for the 2023 game agrees.

The original Switch. There is no version of the remake for it, native or streamed. Capcom put RE2, RE3, RE7 and Village on the first Switch as cloud-streamed Cloud Versions. Denfaminicogamer's October 2024 sale round-up lists exactly those four as the Switch cloud titles, and gives RE:4's platforms as PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and iOS. Capcom's current Switch 2 page shows the same split: it prints a warning about Cloud Version save data under RE2, RE3, RE7 and Village, and none under RE4.

The Resident Evil 4 already sitting in a Switch library is the 2005 original. The Switch 2 release date guide covers how to tell the two apart. So October 16 is the remake's first release on a Nintendo console, not an upgrade from a stream you might already own.

PC: what Capcom's spec sheet promises

These are Capcom's requirements as printed on the Steam listing:

MinimumRecommended
OSWindows 10 (64-bit)Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit)
ProcessorAMD Ryzen 3 1200 / Intel Core i5-7500AMD Ryzen 5 3600 / Intel Core i7 8700
Memory8 GB RAM16 GB RAM
GraphicsAMD Radeon RX 560 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, 4GB VRAMAMD Radeon RX 5700 / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
DirectXVersion 12Version 12
Capcom's performance estimate1080p at 45fps, on the Prioritize Performance setting1080p at 60fps
Needed for ray tracingAMD Radeon RX 6700 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070

Three things in Capcom's notes are worth a second read:

  • The minimum spec targets 45fps, not 60, and both tiers warn that the frame rate can drop in graphics-heavy scenes.
  • The two ray-tracing lines disagree. The minimum block names an RTX 2060 for ray tracing and the recommended block an RTX 2070, both beside the same RX 6700 XT. Capcom doesn't explain the gap. If ray tracing matters to you, plan around the 2070.
  • Both tiers list a broadband internet connection, and the listing gives no storage figure.

Steam's listing is Windows-only, so there is no Mac build there. Mac owners buy through Apple's App Store, covered below.

Steam Deck is Verified, with two notes

Valve rates the remake Verified on Steam Deck, its top compatibility rating, and Steam's compatibility data gives it the same Verified rating for the Steam Machine. The Deck report passes the default controls, the on-screen button glyphs, text legibility and default-settings performance, then adds two notes:

  • First-time setup needs an active internet connection.
  • The game does not default to an external Bluetooth or USB controller as the primary player. A docked Deck with a pad may need its active controller switched by hand.

PS4 and PS5: one purchase, two different games

The PlayStation Store sells the game as one product for both consoles. The Gold Edition page is titled Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition PS4 & PS5, and Capcom confirmed at its October 2022 showcase that digital PS4 buyers can upgrade to the PS5 version for free, as PSU reported at the time. Capcom's store notes add the DLC rule: content bought for either version licenses both, but content bought for PS4 has to be re-downloaded on the same PlayStation Network account after the upgrade. Capcom points to PlayStation's own upgrade instructions for the steps.

That matters because the PS4 version is the compromised one. Push Square's write-up of Digital Foundry's findings credits Capcom with a fairly impressive effort to get it running on the older machine, then lists the cost: very blurry textures, long load times and unsteady performance. Push Square's write-up gives no frame-rate figure for it.

Two things are PS5-only:

  • VR Mode. It is a free download for PS5 that needs PS VR2 and the main game. Capcom says it is not compatible with Separate Ways or The Mercenaries. The VR Mode guide covers what carries over from a normal save.
  • PS5 Pro enhancements. The PlayStation Store lists the game as PS5 Pro Enhanced. That came with a November 2024 update, version 1.400, which MP1st reported arrived with no changelog and no new graphics settings.

iPhone, iPad and Mac: one purchase, a 30GB install

Capcom released the remake for Apple devices on December 20, 2023, with Separate Ways the same day, according to its launch press release, which also describes The Mercenaries as free DLC.

  • The download is free, the game is not. A limited part of the base game plays for free and the rest is an in-app purchase. The App Store lists that unlock, called Base Game, at $59.99, with Separate Ways at $9.99 and the Extra DLC Pack at $19.99. Capcom's launch release sold the unlock at $29.99, a 50%-off deal that ran to January 17, 2024.
  • One purchase covers all three devices. The game supports Universal Purchase across iPhone, iPad and Mac, and the App Store description says save data can be uploaded and downloaded between macOS and iOS devices. The same description says in-app purchases can't be shared with Family Sharing members.

What it needs, per the App Store's compatibility section:

DeviceRequirementStarts at
iPhoneiOS 17 or later and an A17 Pro chip or lateriPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max
iPadiPadOS 17 or later and an M-series or A17 Pro chipM1 iPad Pro and iPad Air; the A17 Pro iPad mini
MacmacOS 13 or later and an Apple M1 chip or laterApple silicon Macs

The standard iPhone 15 is not on the App Store's device list; the cut is the chip, and it has an A16. The list does include the iPhone 16 family and later models.

Three practical notes:

  • It is a big install. Capcom's App Store description puts the app at about 30GB and says installing it needs at least twice that in free space.
  • Controls depend on the device. iPhone and iPad get customizable touch controls and take controllers, and Capcom's compatibility page says keyboard and mouse are not supported on them. The Mac version does support keyboard and mouse, per Capcom's launch release. The App Store description has a single line saying keyboard and mouse are not supported, without naming a device; Capcom's own page attaches that warning to iPhone and iPad only.
  • The startup internet check came and went. Capcom's Apple page logs an August 26, 2024 update that made an internet connection required at launch, then a December 10, 2024 update that removed the requirement. The App Store description still says a connection is needed at startup, which contradicts Capcom's December note.

Switch 2 gets four extra add-ons

Nintendo's store listing itemizes the Switch 2 Gold Edition, in a description its UK page says was provided by the publisher. Alongside the main game, Separate Ways, The Mercenaries and the nine-item Extra DLC Pack, it lists four more:

Add-onWhat it doesPrice on Steam
Attaché Case: GoldRaises the drop rate of pesetas$0.99
Attaché Case: ClassicRaises the drop rate of gunpowder$0.99
Charm: Handgun Ammo+30% handgun ammo craft bonus frequency$0.99
Charm: Green Herb+15% health recovery from green herbs$0.99

Those four started as pre-order and Deluxe bonuses, and Gold Edition elsewhere does not carry them. Capcom's own store section lists Gold Edition on PlayStation, Xbox and Steam as the base game, Separate Ways and the Extra DLC Pack. Steam itemizes that pack as nine items with no case or charm in it, and the Resident Evil Wiki's Gold Edition page says the pre-order items are not included. So the Switch 2 bundle carries $3.96 of add-ons that Steam charges for separately. The attaché case guide and the charms guide cover what the case and charm bonuses are worth in play.

The rest of Nintendo's listing:

  • Download size: 26.9 GB, on Nintendo's UK store page.
  • Play modes: TV, tabletop and handheld.
  • Cloud saves: Save Data Cloud backup, which needs a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • Price: $49.99, with a $39.99 early-adopter price that Nintendo's US listing runs to November 7. Physical copies follow on January 29, 2027, per Nintendo Wire's report of the announcement.

Neither Capcom's Switch 2 page nor Nintendo's listing gives a resolution or frame-rate figure for this version. The Switch 2 release date guide covers the bundle and its pricing, and the hands-on preview roundup collects what the press reported after playing it at Tokyo Game Show.

What it costs at list

List prices on October 11, 2026, before any sale:

StoreGold EditionBase game alone
Steam$49.99$39.99
Microsoft Store (Xbox)$49.99$39.99
PlayStation Store (PS4 and PS5)$49.99$39.99
Nintendo eShop (Switch 2)$49.99Not sold
App Store (iPhone, iPad, Mac)No bundle among the listed purchases$59.99 unlock

Bought piece by piece on Apple, the Gold Edition contents come to $89.97: the $59.99 unlock, $9.99 for Separate Ways and $19.99 for the Extra DLC Pack. That is $39.98 more than the $49.99 bundle on the other four stores, and the $59.99 unlock alone is $20 over the $39.99 base game on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation. The free portion lets you check how it runs on your device before you pay.

Sales move these numbers. On the day they were checked, the PlayStation Store had Gold Edition at $14.99 until October 21 and Microsoft's store also had it at $14.99. Check for a sale before paying list anywhere.

Which version to buy

  • You own a PS5: buy it there. VR Mode exists only on PS5, the store lists it as PS5 Pro Enhanced, and the same purchase covers the PS4 version.
  • You have a PC at the recommended spec, or a Steam Deck: Steam. The base game is $39.99 at list, Valve rates it Verified on Deck, and Capcom publishes both a minimum and a recommended spec.
  • You only have a PS4: it runs, with the downgrades Digital Foundry found. Buy it digitally, and the free upgrade means you don't pay again when you move to a PS5.
  • You have an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, an M-series iPad or an Apple silicon Mac: play the free portion first. The unlock costs $20 more than the base game on the other stores at list, and the full Gold Edition contents cost $39.98 more bought piecemeal.
  • You have a Switch 2: Gold Edition is the only edition on sale, and it includes the four pre-order extras. Neither Capcom nor Nintendo lists performance figures, so read the hands-on roundup if that decides it for you.
  • You have an Xbox One or an original Switch: there is no version of the remake for either. On Switch, the Resident Evil 4 you can buy is the 2005 original, and the beginner guide has what changed between the two.

Quick Action Checklist

  • PS5: buy on PlayStation. One purchase covers PS4 and PS5, and VR Mode (free, needs PS VR2) is PS5-only.
  • PS4: the digital version upgrades to PS5 for free; DLC bought on PS4 must be re-downloaded after the upgrade.
  • PC minimum: GTX 1050 Ti or RX 560 with 4GB, 8 GB RAM, for Capcom's 1080p/45fps estimate. Recommended: GTX 1070 or RX 5700, 16 GB RAM, for 1080p/60fps.
  • Ray tracing: RX 6700 XT, or an RTX 2070 to be safe, since Capcom's two notes name both a 2060 and a 2070.
  • Steam Deck: Verified. Connect to the internet for first-time setup, and be ready to switch the active controller by hand if you play docked with a pad.
  • iPhone/iPad: A17 Pro chip or later, or an M-series chip, iOS/iPadOS 17, about 30GB, with at least twice that free to install. No keyboard and mouse on iPhone or iPad.
  • Mac: M1 or later and macOS 13, through the App Store. Steam has no Mac build.
  • Apple pricing: $59.99 to unlock at list, or $89.97 for Gold Edition contents bought separately. Try the free portion first.
  • Switch 2: Gold Edition only, 26.9 GB, digital from October 16, 2026, and the only Gold Edition listing with the Gold and Classic cases and the two charms.
  • Xbox One and the original Switch: no remake version on either.
