The Last of Us Part 2 Workbench Locations: All 25

Push Square lists 23 workbenches in The Last of Us Part II. The wiki's act pages add up to 25, and so do three chapter-by-chapter lists. Here is every bench in the order you reach it, the detours that hide them, and where In the Field and Prepared for the Worst pop.

A wooden workbench on the Seraphite island in The Last of Us Part II, with hand tools hung on a pegboard above it, inside a timber-built hut lit by oil lanterns, with wooden stools and a shelf to the left.

Push Square's list of The Last of Us Part II workbenches has 23 entries. PowerPyx, Digital Trends and Samurai Gamers each list 25. The Last of Us Wiki keeps no Part II list, but its act pages carry a workbench count in their infoboxes, and those numbers add up to 25 as well. The 23 is a list with a chapter missing, and the table below shows which one.

Below is every bench in the order the story reaches it, with the two trophies that hang off them: In the Field (silver) for finding 12, and Prepared for the Worst (gold) for finding all of them. It covers The Last of Us Part II on PS4 and Part II Remastered on PS5 and PC. The wiki's trophy list says Remastered left the original game's trophies untouched, and both workbench trophies are among them. What each bench lets you buy is a separate question, answered in our Part 2 weapon upgrades guide.

The count is 25, act by act

The Workbenches column is the wiki's infobox number for each act. The right-hand column is PowerPyx's chapter-by-chapter tally, which comes to the same total. Jackson and Santa Barbara each have Abby chapters too, but every bench in those two acts sits in one of Ellie's:

ActBenches found byWorkbenchesChapters that have one

Seattle Day 2Ellie4Hillcrest (2), The Seraphites (2)
Seattle Day 3Ellie4Road to the Aquarium (2), The Flooded City (2)

Seattle Day 2Abby3The Shortcut (2), Ground Zero
Seattle Day 3Abby2The Island, The Escape
Santa BarbaraEllie2Pushing Inland, The Resort
Total2519 of the game's 46 chapters

The game's other three acts, The Park, The Farm and the epilogue, have none. Three things fall out of the table:

  • Ellie finds 15 and Abby finds 10. Both Santa Barbara benches are in Ellie's chapters, which tips the split.
  • Six chapters hold two benches each: Capitol Hill, Hillcrest, The Seraphites, Road to the Aquarium, The Flooded City and The Shortcut. Those six account for 12 of the 25.
  • The 23 is Road to the Aquarium. Push Square's guide, last updated April 2, 2025, goes from The Seraphites on Ellie's Day 2 straight to The Flooded City on Day 3. Road to the Aquarium and its two benches are missing, and a reader comment under the guide pointed that out in February 2021. That is the whole gap between 23 and 25.

All 25, in the order you reach them

PowerPyx and Digital Trends put all 25 in the same chapters. The descriptions below use the landmarks the guides share, and the wiki's act pages place several benches on their own, usually while locating an artifact or a card in the same room.

#ChapterWhere the workbench is
1PatrolEugene's hideout in a library outside Jackson, past the generator you start in the hallway
2DowntownA military tent on raised ground near 5th Avenue and Madison Street, reached by climbing up from the street
3Capitol HillThe gas station garage at the far left of the area below the Capitol Inn motel. Human enemies patrol the gas station
4Capitol HillThe first building on the right of the tripwire street, after Ellie and Dina find Tommy's dead horse
5The TunnelsA side room at the top of the ladder in the red-lit room, off the path where the game wants you to pick up the yellow cable
6HillcrestThe cellar of the Rosemont clothing store, through the hole behind the counter
7HillcrestStraight ahead in the building you jump into from the dumpster you push up the road
8The SeraphitesThe kitchen of an apartment in the long building you get into from a truck roof. Using it starts a fight
9The SeraphitesThe dark back room of Weston's Pharmacy, through the hole behind the counter, in the same room as the safe
10Road to the AquariumInside the WDL Shipping & Packaging building with Jesse: crawl under the rubble into the room on the right
11Road to the AquariumThe upper level of a ruined warehouse you reach after the next swim
12The Flooded CityA dark garage with blue drums outside, down the left-hand channel before the Seattle Sleep Warehouse
13The Flooded CityUpstairs in the W&B Arcade
14On FootJust past the tool shop you rope down into, one aisle over from a tool table, with stairs beside it (PowerPyx)
15The Forward BaseInside a white tent near the start of the chapter
16Hostile TerritoryThe top floor of the Scar-held building, after the crawl under the rubble, beside an artifact
17The ForestThe left corner of La Rosa's Auto Shop
18The CoastIn plain sight in the first building after Abby splits from Yara and Lev
19The ShortcutThe left corner of the Interbay phone store
20The ShortcutThe room to the right of a shrine, two ladders further on
21Ground ZeroThe room to the immediate left after you climb through the broken wall, the same room where you restore power
22The IslandA hut in the Seraphite village, past the watchtower where two Scars attack, opposite a hut with a shrine inside
23The EscapeThe room at the top of the ladder Lev drops down for you
24Pushing InlandThe kitchen of the house with a clicker on the roof
25The ResortA wooden shack in the middle of the Rattler compound fight

The guides flag four of these as sitting on the story path, with no hunting needed: 7 in Hillcrest, 13 in the arcade, 21 in the hospital and 23 on the way off the island. PowerPyx's guide calls 7 "mandatory story progress" and describes 23 as impossible to miss, Digital Trends puts 13 on the main story path, and PowerPyx says you have to enter the room with 21 to restore power.

Ellie's 15: where the detours are

Inside the library outside Jackson that Eugene turned into his home in The Last of Us Part II: rows of bookshelves, two wooden display stands and loose books scattered across a patterned carpet, lit by high windows.

The first bench is in the Jackson act, not Seattle. The wiki's page for Eugene's library puts the building in Jackson County, near the town, and says the former Firefly turned it into his home. It is where Ellie and Dina shelter their horses from a snowstorm. PowerPyx places the bench in Patrol, in the same area as the photo of Eugene and Tommy, after you use the generator in the hallway.

Seattle is where the detours start. These are the ones the guides flag as off the obvious line:

  • Downtown (2) is in the open-world section, and it sits above street level. Digital Trends has you climb a ladder at a security checkpoint; Samurai Gamers has you climb ledges from a crashed truck. Both put it in a tent near the 5th Avenue and Madison Street junction.
  • Capitol Hill (3) is the far-left building after you drop below the motel, and PowerPyx and Digital Trends both warn that human enemies patrol the gas station.
  • The Tunnels (5) is a side room right next to the puzzle. The game is pointing you at a yellow cable, and the bench is in the room beside it.
  • Hillcrest (6) needs you to go behind the Rosemont store's counter and drop through a hole into the cellar. The wiki puts an artifact, Boris' daughter's drawing, on the bench itself.
  • Road to the Aquarium (10) is behind rubble you have to crawl under, in a room off the WDL building's hallway.
  • The Flooded City (12) is a boat detour. PowerPyx says to restart the stalled motor, then take the channel to the left before entering the Seattle Sleep Warehouse. If you have found every bench up to here, this is number 12, and In the Field pops.

The Coast Petroleum gas station in Capitol Hill in The Last of Us Part II: an overgrown forecourt of pumps under a rusted blue-and-orange canopy, with a wrecked car in the grass to the right and a storefront on the left.

The guides only call it "the gas station". Coast Petroleum is the only gas station among the wiki's Capitol Hill landmarks, which makes it the likely home of bench 3. Capitol Hill's second bench is easier to pin down: the wiki's Seattle Day 1 page puts it in the first building on the right of the trap-wired street, the one where Fran's refusal note hangs on a noticeboard.

The bench that fights back

Workbench 8, in The Seraphites, is the one that starts a fight when you use it. The wiki's Seattle Day 2 page says that when you interact with it, four WLF enemies come out of a room and attack. PowerPyx and Digital Trends also say four. The wiki's character pages name the four deserters, Andre Dominguez, Chris Marsh, Adam Peters and Ji-So Huang, and say they ambush Ellie at the workbench. The wiki's own Workbench article says three, which is the outlier, so plan for four.

Go into the bedroom they came out of afterwards. The wiki puts the Explosives training manual there, on the counter by the bed, and the WLF deserter letter in front of the TV. That manual unlocks a locked skill branch, which our Part 2 skills guide covers.

Workbench 9, later in the same chapter, shares its room with the Weston's Pharmacy safe. The note behind the counter gives you the code, and it is in our Part 2 safe codes guide too.

Abby's 10, and the one you see twice

Abby's benches run five, three and two across her three days. Three of them sit in plain view: the Forward Base tent, the first building on The Coast, and the room Lev's ladder leads to in The Escape. Ground Zero's (21) is in the room you have to enter to restore power. The other six take a little more looking:

  • On Foot (14) comes after you rope down into a tool shop. PowerPyx puts it one aisle over, with stairs beside it leading up to a desk of supplements.
  • Hostile Territory (16) is on the top floor of the building the Scars are fighting from, after a crawl under the rubble. PowerPyx and Digital Trends both put it next to an artifact, which PowerPyx names as the letter from a Seraphite father to his son.
  • The Forest (17) is in La Rosa's Auto Shop, in the left corner of the garage.
  • The Shortcut (19 and 20) are in the Interbay phone store and in a side room next to a shrine.
  • The Island (22) is in one of the Seraphite village huts, after the watchtower where two Scars jump you.

The Coast bench is the one you see twice. You walk back through the same building in the next chapter, Return to the Coast. PowerPyx says it is tracked under The Coast only, and Digital Trends says the second visit does not count as a new workbench for the trophies. Using it again does nothing for your count.

Santa Barbara: the last two

Hacienda Polanco, the Rattlers' base in Santa Barbara in The Last of Us Part II: a round, domed building with a tiled roof seen through palms and tall grass past a metal mesh fence, with a figure standing to the right of a stack of wooden pallets.

Bench 24 is in Pushing Inland, in the kitchen of the house with a clicker on its roof. PowerPyx says you have to clear the enemies in that building before you can use it.

Bench 25 is the last one in the game. It is in the Rattlers' base, the old resort the wiki calls Hacienda Polanco and recognises by its domed building. The wiki's Santa Barbara act page, in its entry for the Sparkthug trading card, places the bench in the area where Ellie first fights the Rattlers inside their dome area. PowerPyx and Digital Trends put it in the wooden shack in the middle of that fight. If you have the other 24, Prepared for the Worst pops here.

Walking past counts, and nothing is gone for good

Two rules make this a lot less tense than it sounds.

You do not have to use a bench for it to count. The trophy text is "Find all workbenches", not "use". PowerPyx says you only need to get within a few meters of one. Digital Trends agrees that standing near it is enough, but adds that the distance isn't clear. Take its advice and press the prompt on every bench anyway. It costs nothing, apart from the fight at bench 8.

None of them are missable. PowerPyx says every Part II collectible can be picked up later through Chapter Select and that they carry over into New Game+. If the trophy hasn't popped by the end credits, the table above tells you which chapters to replay. Only 19 of the 46 have a bench.

Some bench rooms double as parts stashes. PowerPyx and Digital Trends both count 29 parts on the upper floor of the W&B Arcade and 18 in the Forward Base tent.

Part I's benches are a separate hunt

The Part I remake has its own version of the trophy. The wiki's Part I trophy list has a silver Prepared for the Worst for finding all workbenches in the 2022 remake, plus a silver called Sharpest Tool in the Shed for finding all workbench tools. Part I's set is smaller and works differently: the wiki's Workbench page lists 11 locations for the first game, and upgrades there check a tools level as well as your parts. Part II dropped tools. Our Part I weapons guide has the Part I locations. The wiki notes that the Tommy's Dam bench is destroyed when the bandits attack the dam, so spend your parts there before that happens.

Quick Action Checklist

  • Count to 25, not 23. Push Square's list of 23 skips Road to the Aquarium's two benches.
  • Ellie has 15 benches and Abby has 10, and the Santa Barbara pair is Ellie's.
  • In the Field pops at bench 12, the Flooded City garage, if you have found every bench before it.
  • At the Seraphites apartment bench, get ready for four WLF deserters before you press the prompt, then grab the Explosives manual from their bedroom.
  • Take the boat's left channel before the Seattle Sleep Warehouse in The Flooded City. That garage is a detour off the boat route.
  • Skip the Coast bench when Return to the Coast walks you past it again. It only counts once.
  • Interact with every bench even though proximity counts. Neither PowerPyx nor Digital Trends gives the exact distance.
  • Missed one? Chapter Select. Nothing here is missable, and the act table shows the 19 chapters worth replaying.

The rest of Part II's completion hunt is in our Part 2 collectibles guide, and if you are replaying in timeline order, the Chronological mode guide lists all 46 chapters in the order that mode plays them. The rest of the series is on our The Last of Us coverage hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many workbenches are in The Last of Us Part 2?
The Last of Us Part II has 25 workbenches. The wiki's act pages give 1 in Jackson, 4 on each of Ellie's three Seattle days, 5, 3 and 2 across Abby's three Seattle days, and 2 in Santa Barbara. Ellie finds 15 and Abby finds 10. Push Square's list shows 23 because it leaves out the two benches in Road to the Aquarium.
Where is the first workbench in The Last of Us Part 2?
The first workbench in The Last of Us Part II is in the Patrol chapter of the Jackson act, inside Eugene's hideout in a library outside Jackson where Ellie and Dina shelter from a snowstorm. It is past the generator you start in the hallway.
Which workbench unlocks the In the Field trophy in The Last of Us Part 2?
In the Field, the silver trophy for finding 12 workbenches in The Last of Us Part II, pops at the 12th bench in story order if you have found all the earlier ones. That is the first workbench in The Flooded City, in a dark garage with blue drums down the left-hand channel before the Seattle Sleep Warehouse.
Do you have to use a workbench for it to count toward Prepared for the Worst?
No. The Prepared for the Worst trophy in The Last of Us Part II asks you to find all workbenches. PowerPyx says getting within a few meters of one counts, and Digital Trends also says standing near it is enough. Neither gives an exact distance, so interacting with each bench is the safe habit.
Can you miss workbenches in The Last of Us Part 2?
Not permanently. PowerPyx says every collectible in The Last of Us Part II can be found later through Chapter Select and carries over into New Game+. Workbenches are in 19 of the 46 chapters, so a missed one means replaying a single chapter, not the whole game.
Which workbench in The Last of Us Part 2 triggers an ambush?
The workbench in an apartment during The Seraphites chapter of Ellie's Seattle Day 2. When you interact with it, four WLF deserters come out of a nearby room and attack, per the wiki's Seattle Day 2 page, PowerPyx and Digital Trends. The Explosives training manual is in the bedroom they come out of.
