Elden Ring Memory Stones: All 8 Locations and Max Slots

Every character starts with two memory slots, and Comet Azur alone needs three. Here are all eight Memory Stones, the tortoise puzzles and missable gesture that guard them, the talisman that takes you to twelve, and the spells that cost more than one slot.

Comet Azur costs three memory slots. Every character in Elden Ring starts with two.

That is the whole problem in two sentences. Spells do not cost you stats to carry, they cost slots. The game gives you two, and both major wikis list two ways to get more: a key item called a Memory Stone, of which there are eight, and one talisman that adds two on top. Meanwhile a string of legendary and Remembrance spells eat two or three slots apiece. Here is where all eight stones are, what stands in front of each one, and how far twelve slots really stretches.

Two slots, eight stones, one talisman

Memory slots are how many sorceries and incantations you can have ready at once. You fill them at a Site of Grace through Memorize Spell, so changing the lineup means resting again. You still need a staff for sorceries and a sacred seal for incantations, but the slot count is what caps the menu.

SourceSlots it addsRunning total

Each Memory Stone (8 exist)110
Moon of Nokstella talisman, while equipped212

The Fandom and Fextralife wikis both put the default at two and the ceiling at 12. Three details sit around that table:

  • No attribute raises it. Mind buys FP, not slots. Fextralife's Memory Stone page calls the stones a departure from Dark Souls 3's Attunement stat, which bundled FP and slots together.
  • Stones work from your inventory. The talisman does not. Fextralife notes a Memory Stone counts the moment you hold it, while the Moon of Nokstella has to be equipped — in one of the four talisman slots you are already fighting over.
  • Shadow of the Erdtree adds none. Both wikis list eight stones, all in the Lands Between, and neither lists a DLC item that raises the cap.

Three of the original ten origins arrive with both slots already filled, per Fandom's origin pages: the Astrologer carries Glintstone Pebble and Glintstone Arc, the Prophet Catch Flame and Heal, the Confessor Urgent Heal and Assassin's Approach. Buy a third spell on any of them and it sits in your inventory, not your menu, until you find a stone. That belongs in the starting class decision too.

7Mt. GelmirDropped by Demi-Human Queen Maggie, northeast of the Hermit VillageAn optional field boss
8Caelid (Dragonbarrow)Chest at the top of Lenne's RiseA Spiritspring jump on Torrent

Five are chests at the top of sorcerers' rises, two are boss drops, and one is for sale. The sorcerer theme is in the item description itself: the stones are "prized by the sorcerers who produce them."

Six of them are yours before you leave Liurnia

Rows 1 to 6 all sit in the Weeping Peninsula, Liurnia or the Roundtable Hold. The Hold opens once Melina invites you, which the Fandom wiki ties to resting at a Site of Grace in Liurnia or Caelid, or to beating Margit, the Fell Omen. After that the Twin Maiden Husks sell the stone with no Bell Bearing attached. At 3,000 runes it is about half a level at level 30, where a single level costs 5,915 (the full price curve), and it is the one stone you can simply buy. Do it on your first visit.

Only Maggie on Mt. Gelmir and Lenne's Rise in Dragonbarrow sit outside those three areas. A caster who sweeps the Weeping Peninsula and Liurnia is on eight slots, two plus six, without setting foot in either.

The two tortoise towers

Oridys's Rise and Testu's Rise share a lock. The door is sealed, a statue by the entrance holds a glowing book that reads "Seek three wise beasts", and the beasts are spectral tortoises you have to find and hit.

Oridys's Rise sits on a plateau on the east side of the Weeping Peninsula. Fextralife's route up is the Spiritspring east of the Castle Morne Rampart grace. The three tortoises:

  • A few steps north of the tower, opposite the entrance.
  • Hidden in the bushes beside the steps up to the door. Look for the blue glow through the leaves.
  • Invisible, in a small pond southwest of the tower. It gives itself away by splashing, so hit the splashes.

Testu's Rise is on a small island north of the Academy of Raya Lucaria, and it adds a crowd of spectral skeletons that spawn to get in your way. Its tortoises:

  • By the cliffs northwest of the tower, on the same level.
  • High in a tree east of the tower. Hit it with anything ranged and it falls to its death.
  • On a ledge halfway down the cliff to the southeast.

One Fextralife note saves a wasted trip: rest at a grace before all three are dead and you may have to read the statue's book again to respawn the ones you missed. In both towers the chest is at the top. Climb the ladder, turn right, take the stairs.

The Converted Tower wants a gesture you can miss

The Converted Tower in western Liurnia, a dark stone tower flanked by crumbling walls in the foreground, with pale castle spires rising through the mist behind it.

The Converted Tower stands in western Liurnia, just south of the Minor Erdtree there. The upper floor is sealed by a statue of Marika just inside the entrance, and the key is a gesture: perform Erudition in front of it.

Erudition comes from Sorcerer Thops at the Church of Irith, and it costs you a key. The Academy Glintstone Key you loot behind Glintstone Dragon Smarag is the one you need to get into the Academy, and the Fandom wiki notes Thops will not accept it. He wants the spare, which is on a corpse lying on a chandelier that hangs from the rafters of the Academy's Church of the Cuckoo, reached across the rooftops northeast of the Debate Parlor grace. Hand him that one and he gives you the gesture.

Two reasons to do it properly. The Fandom wiki flags the gesture as missable: kill Thops before you hand over the key and it is gone. And the Converted Tower is the easy use of it. Fandom's Erudition and Converted Fringe Tower pages say the gesture is also required at the Converted Fringe Tower in northeast Liurnia, performed while wearing one of the five Glintstone Crowns both wikis list for it (Karolos, Olivinus, Twinsage, Lazuli or Witch's), and that tower holds Cannon of Haima and Gavel of Haima. Miss the gesture and you miss both.

If you only want the stone, there is a way round the statue. Both wikis describe climbing the broken walls around the tower, and Fextralife adds that the climb works on foot but the last jump onto the rear balcony needs Torrent's double jump. From the balcony, the steps lead up to the chest in the top room.

Two stones are boss drops

The Red Wolf of Radagon guards the route through the Academy of Raya Lucaria, reached from the Schoolhouse Classroom grace. Fextralife lists it at 2,204 HP, paying 14,000 runes and a Memory Stone, and marks it as optional for the game but required to reach Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, the same fight the respec guide sends you to for Rebirth. If you are going to the Academy at all, you are killing it. You need the Academy Glintstone Key to get in.

Demi-Human Queen Maggie is entirely optional. She is a field boss on Mt. Gelmir, northeast of the Hermit Village, surrounded by demi-humans and Glintstone Sorcerers, and only she has to die to end the fight. Fextralife lists her at 7,515 HP and weak to fire, slash, poison and scarlet rot, and she drops 13,000 runes, a Memory Stone and a Golden Rune [1].

The Comet Azur sorcery icon from Elden Ring, a turquoise comet streaking across a grey parchment scroll.

The real reason to go is who lives next door. Fandom describes Maggie as guarding the resting place of Primeval Sorcerer Azur, and Fextralife names the Site of Grace just past her fight after him. Interact with Azur and he hands you Comet Azur, the only sorcery either wiki prices at three slots. One trip gets you the spell and one of the stones it needs.

Seluvis's Rise and Lenne's Rise

Seluvis's Rise is the southwestern tower of the Three Sisters, on the grounds behind Caria Manor. The Fandom wiki says the Three Sisters can only be reached by going through the manor and killing Royal Knight Loretta, and Fextralife says the tower door stays barred until you have spoken to Ranni at Ranni's Rise and Seluvis has invited you in. After that it is a short climb: Seluvis waits on the ground floor, and a ladder behind him runs up to the chest.

Lenne's Rise is in the northeast of Dragonbarrow, off the path to the Bestial Sanctum, and the front door is not an option. The entrance is sealed and, per Fandom, the imp statue outside has been broken. The way in is the Spiritspring by the tower: ride into it on Torrent, jump, steer onto the roof, and drop onto the balcony on the south face. Inside, a lift and a short climb take you up to the chest. Mind the poison around the base.

The Moon of Nokstella is the last two slots

The Moon of Nokstella talisman icon from Elden Ring, a dark grey moon disc in a silver frame studded with small blue gems.

The talisman is in Nokstella, Eternal City, in a chest at the base of the giant chair-crypt in the city's upper northwest. The trip there is the long part. Nokstella sits in Ainsel River Main, and Fandom's Ainsel River Main page gives two ways in. The first is the sending gate at Renna's Rise, which stays sealed until you have entered Ranni's service and handed her the Fingerslayer Blade, and the blade is in Nokron, which opens only after Starscourge Radahn dies. The endings guide walks that chain step by step. The second skips Ranni's quest: a coffin on the shore of the shallow lake in Deeproot Depths carries you to Ainsel River Main.

It weighs 0.8 and it costs a talisman slot, so whether it earns its place depends on what you cast:

  • A pure caster running two- and three-slot spells: yes. Two more slots is room for one more Rennala's Full Moon-sized spell.
  • A melee build carrying a few one-slot buffs: no. Golden Vow, Flame, Grant Me Strength and a heal take three of your ten slots and leave seven empty. That talisman slot does more as damage or defence.

The spells that cost two or three slots

Most spells cost one slot. Fextralife's spell data lists 24 that cost more, and Fandom's infoboxes agree on 21 of them:

SpiraIncantation (DLC)2Enir-Ilim, up the stairs from the First Rise grace

The asterisks are where the wikis split. Fandom prints one slot for Elden Stars and Founding Rain of Stars and leaves Rellana's Twin Moons blank. Fextralife lists two for all three, wiki.gg's Elden Stars page also says two, and its Founding Rain of Stars notes say it needs two to equip, so the table goes with two. If you are planning a build around either spell, check the Memorize Spell screen before you commit the slots.

Put those numbers against the budget and the ceiling starts to matter. An Intelligence build carrying Comet Azur, Ranni's Dark Moon, Rennala's Full Moon and Meteorite of Astel has spent nine slots on four spells: one to spare on ten slots, three with the Moon of Nokstella. A Faith build carrying Placidusax's Ruin, Scarlet Aeonia and Black Blade has spent eight on three, and Golden Vow plus Flame, Grant Me Strength fills the last two of ten.

Remembrance spells are the slot hogs

The pattern in that table is where the spells come from. Nineteen spells can be taken from a Remembrance or the Heart of Bayle, and by Fextralife's numbers 14 of them cost two or three slots. The five that cost one are Fortissax's Lightning Spear, Burn, O Flame!, Bloodboon, Land of Shadow and Rotten Butterflies.

That is worth knowing before you stand in front of Finger Reader Enia, because the choice there is permanent unless you duplicate the Remembrance first. On a character with four slots, one two-slot spell is half the menu before you have cast it once.

What patch 1.17 changed

Patch 1.17, released 27 August 2026, touched two of the two-slot sorceries: Bandai Namco's notes list increased power for Founding Rain of Stars and reduced casting time for Meteorite of Astel. None of its entries changes a slot cost, a Memory Stone or the Moon of Nokstella.

Memory Stones in New Game Plus

Memory Stones carry into the next Journey. Fextralife's New Game Plus page files them under the non-quest items you keep, in the group whose extra copies are not found again once you have them. So a stone you took on Journey 1 does not come back, and one you missed is still waiting for you. Talismans carry over as well, the Moon of Nokstella included. The rest of what survives is in the New Game Plus guide.

Quick Action Checklist

  • Buy the Twin Maiden Husks' stone on your first visit to the Roundtable Hold. 3,000 runes, one in stock, no Bell Bearing needed.
  • Hit three spectral tortoises to open Oridys's Rise and Testu's Rise. Watch for splashing water and tree branches.
  • Give Thops the spare key from the chandelier in the Church of the Cuckoo, not your own. Erudition opens the Converted Tower and, with one of five specific Glintstone Crowns on, the Converted Fringe Tower, and it is gone if Thops dies first.
  • Or climb the Converted Tower and use Torrent's double jump to reach the rear balcony.
  • Kill the Red Wolf of Radagon on the way to Rennala. It drops a stone.
  • Talk to Ranni before you try Seluvis's Rise. The door stays shut until Seluvis invites you in.
  • Do Maggie and Azur in one trip. The stone and the three-slot Comet Azur are neighbours on Mt. Gelmir.
  • Take Torrent through the Spiritspring to land on Lenne's Rise's south balcony.
  • Wear the Moon of Nokstella only if you cast multi-slot spells. Otherwise the talisman slot is worth more than two memory slots.
  • Check the slot cost before trading a Remembrance. 14 of the 19 Remembrance and Heart of Bayle spells cost two or three.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Memory Stones are in Elden Ring?
Elden Ring has 8 Memory Stones, per both the Fandom and Fextralife wikis. One is bought from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold for 3,000 runes, five are in chests at the top of sorcerers' rises (Oridys's Rise, Testu's Rise, the Converted Tower, Seluvis's Rise and Lenne's Rise), and two are boss drops (the Red Wolf of Radagon and Demi-Human Queen Maggie). Shadow of the Erdtree adds none.
What is the maximum number of memory slots in Elden Ring?
The maximum is 12 memory slots in Elden Ring. Every character starts with 2, each of the 8 Memory Stones adds 1 for a total of 10, and equipping the Moon of Nokstella talisman adds 2 more. The stones work as soon as they are in your inventory; the talisman only counts while it is equipped. No attribute, including Mind, raises the slot count.
Where is the easiest Memory Stone in Elden Ring?
The easiest Elden Ring Memory Stone is the one sold by the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold for 3,000 runes, with one in stock and no Bell Bearing or boss required. The Roundtable Hold opens after Melina invites you, which happens after resting at a Site of Grace in Liurnia or Caelid or after defeating Margit, the Fell Omen.
Which Elden Ring spells use three memory slots?
Three Elden Ring spells cost three memory slots in both the Fandom and Fextralife spell data: the sorcery Comet Azur, given by Primeval Sorcerer Azur near the Hermit Village on Mt. Gelmir, and the incantations Placidusax's Ruin and Scarlet Aeonia, from the Remembrance of the Dragonlord and the Remembrance of the Rot Goddess. Fextralife lists 21 more spells at two slots.
Where is the Moon of Nokstella in Elden Ring?
The Moon of Nokstella talisman, which adds 2 memory slots, is in a chest at the base of the giant chair-crypt in the upper northwest of Nokstella, Eternal City. Nokstella sits in Ainsel River Main, which has two entrances: the sending gate at Renna's Rise, which unseals after you enter Ranni's service and give her the Fingerslayer Blade from Nokron (Nokron opens after Starscourge Radahn is defeated), or a coffin in Deeproot Depths that skips Ranni's quest.
How do you open the Converted Tower in Elden Ring?
Perform the Erudition gesture in front of the Marika statue inside the Converted Tower in western Liurnia to unseal its upper floor and the Memory Stone chest. Erudition comes from Sorcerer Thops at the Church of Irith when you give him the spare Academy Glintstone Key from the chandelier in the Church of the Cuckoo. Without the gesture, you can climb the broken outer walls and use Torrent's double jump to reach the rear balcony.
Does Shadow of the Erdtree add Memory Stones?
No. Both the Fandom and Fextralife wikis list 8 Memory Stones in Elden Ring, all in the Lands Between, and neither lists a Shadow of the Erdtree item that raises the memory slot cap above 12. Per Fextralife's spell data, the DLC does add ten spells that cost two memory slots each, including Messmer's Orb, Light of Miquella and both Heart of Bayle incantations.
Do Memory Stones carry over to New Game Plus in Elden Ring?
Yes. Elden Ring keeps your Memory Stones when you start a new Journey, per Fextralife's New Game Plus page, and stones you already collected do not appear again. Any stone you missed on your first Journey is still there to pick up. The Moon of Nokstella carries over too, since talismans are kept.
