SPIEL Essen 2026 Tickets: Prices, Hours and the Halls

There is no box office at SPIEL Essen 2026. There is no four-day ticket. And on September 28, twenty-four days before the doors open, the official ticket shop marks two of the four days as down to their last few tickets.

That is the shape of SPIEL now — Merz Verlag, which runs it, bills it as the world's largest public fair for board games — and it is a very different planning problem from the one it was a few years ago. SPIEL sold out for the first time in 2024, by the organiser's own account. In 2025 it sold out on all four days, and the first three were gone before the fair even opened. For 2026 it has added an eighth hall, and the ticket counts are tracking the same way.

Here is what SPIEL Essen 2026 costs, which days you can still get, where your games are, and the one add-on that quietly needs two tickets.

Four days, and two are nearly gone

SPIEL Essen 2026 runs Thursday, October 22 to Sunday, October 25 at Messe Essen, Messeplatz 1, 45131 Essen. Hours, straight off the official ticket page:

Two sources, and they are worth reading together. The right-hand column is SPIEL's most recent ticket-status news post, which is undated on the site and put Saturday at 90 per cent, Thursday and Friday at 75 per cent each and Sunday at 50. The shop's own traffic-light labels, read on September 28, put Friday in the same "only a few left" band as Saturday. Thursday and Sunday are the days with room.

The trend line is the thing to plan around. SPIEL's news feed reported Thursday to Saturday at 50 per cent, then Saturday alone at 75 per cent "with just over five weeks to go", then Saturday at 90. Last year the first three days sold out before opening day and Sunday went on the Sunday afternoon of the show itself. Nothing guarantees 2026 runs the same way, but nobody should be planning a Saturday on the assumption it will still be there in mid-October.

Sunday is the day to buy if you are flexible, with one catch: it costs the same €25 for one hour less.

What a ticket costs in 2026

Tickets are sold only through the online shop, and every admission ticket on the price list is a day ticket. There is no multi-day pass on it — SPIEL dropped four-day tickets in 2025, explaining at the time that every four-day ticket forced it to block four individual day tickets under the site's safety capacity limit, and that most four-day holders only came for three days anyway.

Children under four get in free. The reduced ticket covers pupils, students, people with a severe-disability card (degree 50 or more), people doing a voluntary social year, and anyone attending in full cosplay. SPIEL's FAQ defines that as a complete costume or LARP outfit of a recognisable character from a board game, video game, film or series; a pair of elf ears does not count. Bring the proof, because it can be checked at the entrance.

Year on year, the normal ticket is up €1.50, or 6.4 per cent, and the family ticket is up €5. The early-bird discount closed on August 4.

Four days at the normal price is €100. The business ticket at €46 buys entry from 9:30 a.m. through fast lanes at the East, South and West entrances, the B2B Lounge in the Parkrestaurant in Hall 7, and the new matchmaking tool, but it needs uploaded, personalised proof that you work in the board game industry. The business-plus-parking tickets for car park P6 are sold out on all four days.

Payment in the shop is by Mastercard, Visa, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Each ticket is personalised with a name and a visit date at checkout, and the shop is explicit that tickets cannot be returned and days cannot be swapped.

The family ticket needs two children to pay off

The family ticket admits up to two people aged 13 or over plus up to three children aged 4 to 12, and everyone on it has to come through the entrance together. Whether it saves money depends entirely on how many children you bring.

Two adults and one child is the trap: the product called a family ticket is a euro dearer than buying the three tickets separately. And a 13-year-old counts as one of the two "adult" places, not as a child.

The add-ons, and the one that needs two tickets

All of these are bought in the same shop. The Golden Demon entry, the laser tag and the Educators Day certificate all need a fair ticket for the same person; the Werewolves show does not.

The Golden Demon entry needs two day tickets. The shop flags it with a warning: the add-on requires a day ticket for one of Thursday to Saturday and a day ticket for Sunday. That follows from the schedule. Entries are registered at a desk open 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and only 10:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday — the deadline for all categories is Saturday, October 24 at 12:00 — while miniatures are collected and the awards handed out on Sunday, and SPIEL's Golden Demon page says you must be there in person for both registration and the award ceremony. So the real minimum cost of entering is €62 (two normal day tickets plus €12), or €56 on reduced tickets. With the Saturday entry slot already sold out, entrants are now choosing between Thursday and Friday for the drop-off.

The laser tag price comes with a €10 voucher for the Warhammer shop in Hall 1, so a painter who was going to buy paint anyway is really paying €15. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early: late admission is not possible.

The Werewolves Night is audience-only — you watch a round of around 20 Rocket Beans players, you do not get a seat at the table — and you can buy it without a fair ticket. It is also streamed live on YouTube and Twitch via Rocket Beans TV.

Eight halls for the first time

SPIEL 2025, by the organiser's own figures, drew 220,000 visitors from more than 80 nations to 948 exhibitors from 50 countries, across seven halls and about 77,500 square metres, with 1,716 new releases. For 2026 SPIEL has converted Hall 8 — previously the waiting area — into exhibition space, taking the fair to all eight halls plus the Galeria and 81,200 square metres, what Merz Verlag calls the maximum capacity of the grounds and its fourth floor-space record in a row. The official exhibitor list carried 979 entries when we read it on September 28.

Losing the old waiting area changed the entrances. The North entrance opens for the first time this year during peak morning hours; it sits behind the Grugahalle and leads directly into Hall 5. And there is a new indoor waiting area in Hall 1A, next to the South entrance, where you can queue under a roof until the hall gates open at 10:00 a.m.

Here is what is in each hall, counted from the official exhibitor list. An exhibitor with stands in two halls counts in both.

Hall 5 has more exhibitor entries than any other hall. Hall 7 has the fewest of the eight, but that is where Asmodee, Kosmos, Ravensburger and Hasbro sit, and Asmodee alone lists seven stands there.

The printable hall plans are dated July 20, and SPIEL warns they can still change. The free SPIEL app got its 2026 update on September 3, with interactive hall maps, the release list and the stage schedule, and it can hold your ticket.

Hall 5 is the card game hall

If you read this site for Magic, Riftbound, Pokémon, CookieRun: Braverse or Cyberpunk TCG, the new North entrance is your door. The card game publishers are clustered in Hall 5, per the official exhibitor list:

The big card-sleeve brands are in the same hall — Ultra PRO at 5E400, Dragon Shield at 5H700, Gamegenic at 5M500 — so sleeves and deck boxes are a short walk from the demo tables. Disney Lorcana is the exception to the cluster: it sits with the rest of Ravensburger in Hall 7.

A few notes from the listings themselves. CookieRun: Braverse is at 5E500, the booth Devsisters named in its August 24 "Hello, Europe!" announcement, which promises Learn to Play sessions — our Braverse organised play calendar has the rest of its year. Cyberpunk TCG has a stand on SPIEL's list at 5G700, even though WeirdCo's own conventions page still reads "TBD" for both its Essen location and what is on offer. Bandai's NARUTO CARD GAME event page confirms tutorial sessions at SPIEL without naming a stand; the only Bandai card game entry on the exhibitor list is Bandai TCG at 5J500, so check the app before walking over. In Hall 1, the Gundam: Assemble stand at 1B725 describes a new miniatures game launching October 31, 2026, with a free painting session where you paint a miniature and keep it. Archon Studio, whose StarCraft miniatures game we covered at Gen Con, is at 1E211.

The card game world also gets its own evening this year. The TCG Awards — set up by Card Sports League and Hana Sports & Entertainment in partnership with Merz Verlag — hold their first gala on the Thursday night of the fair, across 13 categories: nine fan-voted Community Awards, three jury-judged Business Awards and a metric-based Player of the Year. The top three finalists are already up on the TCG Awards site for every category except Local Game Store of the Year, which still reads "to be announced". Game of the Year is between Magic: The Gathering, One Piece TCG and Star Wars: Unlimited; Newcomer of the Year between Gundam TCG, Riftbound and Star Wars: Unlimited. The gala itself is an industry night: €200 a seat, food and drink included, and the shop only sells it to accounts verified in its "TCG Industry" category. SPIEL says the ceremony will also be streamed live.

What is on the Hall 4 stage

The SPIEL.talks stage in Hall 4 runs every day from 11:00 a.m., free with any fair ticket, no booking. Sessions are marked English or German, and Manuel Fritsch — editor-in-chief of IGN Germany and a Spiel des Jahres juror — hosts the whole programme. The picks:

• Thursday, 3:10 – 3:50 p.m.: Peter Mohrbacher, "How to be an Indie Creator", in English. Mohrbacher, known for his Magic: The Gathering illustration and his Angelarium project, is SPIEL's 2026 ambassador and co-designed this year's posters.
• Friday is Educators Day: a full day of talks on games in education, therapy and research. Free to sit in; the €5 add-on only buys a certificate.
• Saturday, 2:00 – 6:00 p.m.: Meet & Play in Saal Essen rather than on the stage — a free, community-organised meet-up with board game content creators.
• Sunday, 11:40 a.m. – 12:10 p.m.: the Cosplay Catwalk.
• Sunday afternoon: the Golden Demon award ceremony — with a clash in the published times, covered below.

The Deutscher Spiele Preis, the German community-voted game award Merz Verlag has run since 1990, announces its winners at the SPIEL press conference. The top three family and adult games, published only in alphabetical order, are Artengarten (Feuerland), Boss Fighters QR (Pegasus Spiele) and Galactic Cruise (PD-Verlag). Getting there, and getting your games home

Take the U11. It runs from Essen main station to the fairground in about five minutes. The Messe Ost/Gruga stop is at the East entrance, which leads to Hall 8, and has a lift. The Messe West-Süd/Gruga stop serves the West entrance (Hall 3) by ramp and the South entrance (Hall 1) about 300 metres on. SPIEL's travel page carried no disruption notice on September 28 — unlike 2025, when SPIEL warned of rail works on the Essen–Dortmund line running through the fair.

Driving is the worse option by the organiser's own advice. Visitors are sent to car parks P2 and P10, with shuttle buses to the halls; parking costs €12 a day near the fair and €10 at P10, and cars cannot stay overnight. Düsseldorf Airport is about a 20-minute drive.

Store as you shop. Cloakrooms at the East, South and West entrances take jackets and small bags for a one-off €3. For the haul, the bag storage at the end of the Galeria takes large bags and suitcases at €3 per bag plus €2 every time you reopen it — so batch your drop-offs. Coin lockers at the West and South foyers cost €1.

Or ship it. The MBE shipping service is in Hall 8 at stand 8A110, packaging included, and every drop-off is one shipment — you cannot build up a parcel over the day.

Rates marked with an asterisk exclude VAT. For the USA, Canada and Mexico, Asia and Central America, and rest-of-world rates, SPIEL's rate card adds that MBE charges on whichever is higher, real weight or volumetric weight (length × width × height in cm, divided by 5,000) — so a box of big-box games can bill heavier than it weighs. Note that Germany's 20 kg and 30 kg bands are both published at €37.

The arithmetic for anyone flying home to North America: 20 kg for €230 is €11.50 a kilo, and 30 kg for €310 drops that to about €10.33. Compare that with your airline's excess baggage fee before you decide which one hurts less.

The rules that catch people out

Get a wristband before you leave. Tickets cannot be scanned twice. If you step out for lunch, you need a re-entry wristband from the exit or you are not getting back in.

Do not wear a cajon backpack. The giant box-shaped game backpacks may not be carried on your back in the aisles. Pull them, like rolling suitcases, and watch the people around you. Handcarts are not banned, but SPIEL recommends against them.

Tickets are personal. No refunds, no day swaps, and resale is prohibited under the terms. If you fall ill, you can pass a ticket to someone you know with a short written authorisation and a copy of your ID.

Bring cash. Whether a booth takes cards is up to the exhibitor. There are ATMs at the Messehaus Ost, Süd and West buildings, and SPIEL itself warns they can run dry during the fair. Free Wi-Fi exists only in the East, South and West foyers, not in the halls.

Cosplay props have hard limits. Foam, rubber, latex, cardboard, soft plastic or wooden props (wood no thicker than 3 cm) up to 1.5 metres long are allowed; shields up to 80 cm across; bows only without a real string. No metal blades, and no realistic replica firearms. Security's call is final.

You can bring food and drink. Animals are not allowed apart from medical assistance dogs.

Accessibility. An accompanying person for a visitor with the relevant marker on a German severe-disability pass gets in free, arranged by email after buying the main ticket. Wheelchairs can be borrowed free for the day against a €50 deposit, reserved through Messe Essen.

What is not published yet

Being straight about the gaps, twenty-four days out.

• The TCG Awards winners and gala start time. The top three per category are published, but the winners are revealed on the night, and the shop listing says only "the evening of 22 October" on the fairground. Local Game Store of the Year has no finalists listed yet.
• The Deutscher Spiele Preis winner. Only the alphabetical top three is out; the order comes at the SPIEL press conference.
• How to join a NARUTO CARD GAME tutorial. Bandai's SPIEL page, read on September 28, says participation details "will be announced at a later date".
• Cyberpunk TCG's Essen plans. SPIEL lists a stand; WeirdCo's own page still says TBD for both the stand and what is on offer.
• The Golden Demon ceremony time. The Golden Demon page puts the award ceremony at 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday; the SPIEL.talks programme lists it at 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Plan for 4:00.
• Bag storage hours. The FAQ says 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. Sunday); the storage page says 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. Sunday). Assume the later opening.
• Shuttle frequency. The FAQ says buses from P2 and P10 run every 10 to 15 minutes; the travel page says every 15 to 20 minutes on average.
• Whether any day sells out before the doors open. Last year three did. SPIEL says it will post updates on its channels, and the shop's traffic-light labels are the live read.

Quick Action Checklist

• Buy now if you want Friday or Saturday. Both read "only a few left" in the shop on September 28. Thursday and Sunday have room.
• Buy online, in advance. There is no box office, and each ticket is fixed to a name and a date.
• Cosplaying? Buy the reduced ticket — €22 instead of €25 — and wear the full costume.
• Do the family-ticket sum. It saves €31 for two adults and three children, and costs €1 more than singles for two adults and one child.
• Entering Golden Demon? Buy two day tickets — Thursday or Friday plus Sunday — and register by Saturday at noon.
• Card games are in Hall 5; Lorcana is in Hall 7. Use the North entrance in the morning for Hall 5.
• Take the U11, get a re-entry wristband before you leave the grounds, and bring cash.
• Shipping home? MBE is at 8A110 in Hall 8. Weigh it against your airline's excess-baggage fee.
