What Is POBG? PUBG's Maintenance Mode Mini-Game

Update 42.3's headline features were the RPD, the first LMG Meta Rotation and Crosshair Customization. Under a heading of its own, the same patch notes turned a recurring chicken-fighting arcade mode — one KRAFTON has now shipped three separate times since 2021 — into a standing fixture of every PC maintenance window.

What POBG actually is

Per the Update 42.3 patch notes, under the heading "(PC) POBG: Maintenance Mode":

A new offline mini-game, POBG, has been added for you to enjoy during server maintenance. Play while you wait!

That heading's parenthetical is doing real work. KRAFTON tags PC-exclusive sections of the 42.3 notes with a leading (PC), and for this one it goes further: "The following updates apply to PC platforms (Steam, Epic)." Console picked up the rest of Update 42.3 during its own 20 August maintenance window, but nothing in KRAFTON's text extends POBG to it.

What KRAFTON confirmed, in one table

That is the entire confirmed feature list. No menu path, no control scheme and no stated end date appear in the patch notes — a gap covered below.

Where PlayerOmnom came from

POBG is not new, and Update 42.3 is not its first comeback. KRAFTON built it for April Fools 2021 as a two-week joke, then brought it back a second time — as a full event mode, not a joke — in Update 37.1, dated 11-12 August 2025. The original 2021 announcement is written entirely in character as a chicken uprising:

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner. You Survivors revel in your victories over each other and still have the gall to drag us into it. Well, no more [...] look for the arcade cabinet in your precious menus [...] For I am PlayerOmnom and these are my Battlegrounds now. –PlayerOmnom

That signature is where the fan shorthand "PlayerOmnom's Battlegrounds" for the acronym comes from — KRAFTON's own copy never spells it out, but the community has read it that way since 2021. The original shipped as a playable 2D top-down arcade shooter on the Steam client and ran on a hard deadline: playable only through 12 April 2021.

POBG did not stay retired. Update 37.1's patch notes, dated 11-12 August 2025, announced it was back as a full event mode: "The fan-favorite mode PlayerOmnom's Battlegrounds finally returns... Defeat the chicken uprising in this top-down pixel shooter!" That version was a much bigger build than the 2021 joke — a third-person, solo, stage-based shooter spanning six maps (Erangel, Miramar, Karakin, Vikendi, Sanhok and Paramo), with enemies and bosses that got tougher each stage, including a boss named Captain Crispy introduced alongside the Paramo stage. Matches did not count toward the Survivor Pass or grant Arcade Points or BP, and the mode did not carry over into the following patch, Update 37.2 — so that 2025 run was itself limited-time.

Update 42.3 doesn't reuse either of those earlier builds. There is no villain copy this time, no stage-clearing run across six maps, and — as far as KRAFTON has published — no closing date. What began as a two-week joke in 2021 and came back as a full event mode in 2025 has now returned a third time, reworked into a permanent line item under Maintenance Mode with just Normal and Hard completion times to chase.

What the patch notes don't say

This is the half worth knowing before your next maintenance window.

• No stated menu path. The patch notes never say where in the client POBG appears. KRAFTON's own announcement video is titled "Play POBG when you can't play PUBG. Open during scheduled maintenance starting with Update 42.3" — read literally, that frames it as something that opens once the client detects maintenance, not a menu entry you would otherwise stumble into.
• No stated permanence. "Has been added" carries no expiry, unlike 2021's explicit 12 April cutoff. Treat this run as standing until KRAFTON says otherwise, not confirmed to be forever.
• Barely mentioned elsewhere in our own coverage. Our Update 42.3 crosshair guide, published two days after this patch, names POBG once in passing as one of three (PC)-tagged sections in 42.3 and never explains what it is. This post is that explanation.
• No control scheme or scoring detail beyond Normal/Hard times. KRAFTON states what is tracked, not how the game plays moment to moment.

Quick Action Checklist

• POBG only opens during a live server maintenance window — you cannot queue it on demand
• It is PC only, scoped to Steam and Epic; nothing in the 42.3 notes extends it to console
• Your best Normal and Hard times save to the PC you're on, not your PUBG account — a new rig starts blank
• Playing when maintenance ends does not cut your run short; you finish it out
