PUBG Team Communication Guide: Comms That Win Fights

Most squads don't lose fights because they got out-aimed — they lose because four people were playing four different games. Here's how to build comms that actually win fights: callout structure, info discipline, who talks when, and how to IGL without being insufferable.

Queue up with three friends who all have better aim than you, give them no comms structure, and they'll lose to a coordinated squad of average shooters almost every time. That's not a feel-good theory — it's the entire reason pro PUBG teams pay in-game leaders and scrim comms protocols for hours. Four players sharing one clear picture beat four players with four private pictures, and the gap is bigger than any gap in raw aim.

This guide is about building that shared picture. Not the vocabulary — our PUBG callouts glossary already covers what the words mean. This is the layer on top: how to structure a callout so it lands, what to shut up about, who talks during a fight, how to make decisions as a unit, and how to actually practice comms instead of hoping they emerge naturally after 500 matches. (Spoiler: they don't. Bad habits emerge naturally. Good comms are built on purpose.)

Why good comms beat good aim

A PUBG fight is an information race wearing a gunfight costume. The squad that knows where the enemies are, how many there are, and what state they're in gets to choose when and how the fight happens. The squad that doesn't gets chosen.

Think about what actually kills squads in the mid-game: someone gets knocked by a shooter nobody else saw, two players turn the same corner into the same enemy while the other two watch a dead angle, or the squad splits because half of them thought "we're rotating" meant now and half thought it meant after looting. None of those are aim problems. All of them are information problems, and every one of them is fixable with words.

Here's the falsifiable version: PUBG gives every player a compass bar reading 0–360 degrees — 0/360 north, 90 east, 180 south, 270 west — visible at the top of the screen at all times. That means any player, regardless of aim, can transmit an enemy position to three teammates with roughly one second of speech: "contact 275, 150 meters." A squad that does this consistently turns every 1v1 spot into a 4v1 information advantage. That's the whole pitch. The rest is execution.

The anatomy of a useful callout

The Bootcamp compound on Sanhok — a multi-level, multi-entrance fight where 'he's inside' is a useless callout and 'ground floor, east door, one cracked' wins the refrag.

Every good callout answers three questions in a fixed order: where, how far, what state. Direction first because it's the thing teammates act on before you finish the sentence. Distance second because it decides whether they swing, scope, or ignore. State last because it sets the follow-up: push a knocked player, respect a full-health one.

  • Where: compass bearing or a shared landmark. "Contact 045" or "contact, ferry pier, water tower." Never "left," never "over there," never "behind us" — your behind isn't their behind.
  • How far: rounded meters. "50" means SMG range, push it. "200" means DMR range, hold and trade shots. "400" means nobody panic, keep rotating. Precision to the meter is pointless; precision to the bracket is everything.
  • What state: "one cracked," "knocked him," "he's full, has a 4x," "two of them, one no helmet." This is what turns a spot into a decision.

Then there's the second half nobody practices: closing the loop. When the enemy you called dies or repositions, say so. "275 is down" or "he moved, lost him, last seen pushing the ridge." A callout that never gets updated is worse than no callout — your squad is now holding an angle on a ghost while the real enemy flanks. Stale information kills exactly as efficiently as no information, it just takes ten seconds longer.

One more habit that separates decent comms from great ones: call your own status without being asked. "Reloading." "Pushing the blue side door." "I'm one shot, falling back." Your teammates can't cover a reload they don't know is happening. Knocked players have the most important version of this job — a downed teammate who calls the exact position of the shooter converts their own death into a trade. Info discipline: what not to say

Comms fail in two directions. Squads that say too little lose to information they never shared. Squads that say too much lose to information they buried. The second failure is sneakier because everyone feels like they're communicating.

The rule is simple: during a fight, the voice channel belongs to information that changes decisions. These things qualify:

  • Enemy positions, movements, and states
  • Your own status and position when it changes
  • The plan and changes to the plan ("pushing on my nade," "reset, regroup at the rocks")
  • Utility calls ("flashing the door," "smoking the revive")

These things do not qualify, and every one of them costs your squad a callout that mattered:

  • Play-by-play narration of your own fight ("he's shooting me, oh my god, he almost got me")
  • Damage reports with no position attached ("I'm getting beamed!" — from where?)
  • Post-death analysis while three teammates are still fighting. You're dead. Spectate, spot for the living, save the essay for the lobby.
  • Loot chatter mid-fight. Nobody needs to know you found an adrenaline right now.

The "getting shot" one deserves special attention because it's the most common comms failure in the game. Taking damage is information only when it comes with a direction. Train yourself to convert panic into a bearing: not "I'm being shot," but "taking shots from 190, elevated." Who talks when: fight comms protocol

Four people can't talk at once, and PUBG fights don't leave room for turn-taking negotiations. Good squads solve this with an implicit priority system, and you can make it explicit in one sentence before your next match: whoever has eyes on the fight owns the channel.

  • Engaged player calls. The teammate actively trading shots or watching the live angle gets priority. Everyone else yields the moment they start talking.
  • Everyone else fills gaps. Flank watch, count call ("that's three accounted for, one missing"), utility timing. Short, between the engaged player's calls.
  • Dead players go last and stay brief. Spectating teammates are a free drone feed — "two heading to your rock, east side" — but they wait for a gap. A dead player talking over a live one is stealing bandwidth from someone who can still shoot.
  • The IGL breaks ties. When two decisions conflict — push versus reset, take the compound versus rotate — one voice decides. Doesn't have to be loud. Has to be one.

There's also a volume rule that sounds dumb and wins fights: keep your tone flat. Panic is contagious on voice comms, and so is calm. A squad that calls "knocked, two pushing east side" in the same tone they'd order coffee processes information faster than a squad screaming it. Pro team comms sound boring. That's the point.

IGL-ing without being a jerk

Somebody has to make the calls. In-game leading has a reputation problem because most people's only exposure to it is a random screaming "ROTATE" at strangers, but an IGL is just the squad member who converts shared information into a single decision when the clock is running.

What an IGL actually decides: where to drop, when to rotate (pair this with our blue zone rotation guide — rotating early beats rotating perfectly), whether to take or avoid a fight, and how to enter the endgame. What an IGL doesn't do: micromanage aim, narrate the obvious, or relitigate a call mid-execution.

Three habits make an IGL worth following:

  1. Decide fast, even when it's 60/40. A mediocre plan executed by four players beats a perfect plan executed by two while the other two argue. In PUBG the clock is the blue zone, and it doesn't pause for consensus.
  2. Give calls a trigger, not just a verb. "Push" is a bad call. "Push when my smoke pops" is a good one. Triggers synchronize four people without a countdown.
  3. Own the misses without drama. "Bad call, my fault, reset to the treeline" costs three seconds and buys back trust. IGLs who defend bad calls stop being followed by mid-game, and a squad that stops following its IGL is four solos in matching outfits.

If your group has no natural leader, rotate the job by match, not by moment. The worst structure is the one where leadership is up for grabs during a fight.

Markers, pings, and the radio wheel

PUBG's non-verbal tools carry more weight than most squads give them, and if you play with a mixed group — some on voice, someone's mic broken, a random fill — they're the difference between comms and silence.

  • Map markers. Every squad member can place a marker on the map, and it shows up on the compass bar for the whole team, color-coded to the player who placed it. A marked rotation target beats thirty seconds of "which treeline? THAT treeline" every single time. Mark the drop, mark the rotation target, mark the compound you're about to hit.
  • The ping and radio message system. PUBG has a radio message wheel for exactly the situations voice can't cover — spotting enemies, calling directions, flagging loot — and it renders as text plus a world indicator for your team. If you're filling with randoms who won't talk, radio messages are your entire comms plan. Use them liberally; a squad of four silent randoms who ping is shockingly functional.
  • Voice channel discipline. PUBG has an All channel and a Team channel. There is no information your squad needs that belongs on All. Set it to Team and never think about it again.

The deeper point: pings and markers are pre-fight tools, voice is a during-fight tool. Squads that mark their plan before contact spend their voice bandwidth on enemies instead of geography.

Drills that build squad comms

Comms are a skill, which means they respond to deliberate practice and decay without it. You don't need scrims — you need intent in your normal queue.

  • One match, compass only. Ban relative directions for a full match. Every contact call must include a bearing. It feels stilted for two games and automatic by the fifth.
  • Assign the count. In your next squad fight, one designated player tracks enemy count out loud: "knocked one, that's one down, two accounted for, one missing." The missing-man call prevents more squad wipes than any aim improvement you'll make this month, because the unaccounted enemy is always the one who flanks.   • Dead-player review. When you die, don't alt-tab. Spectate your killer for thirty seconds and call what you learn. It keeps dead players useful and trains spotting under zero pressure.
  • The debrief question. After a lost fight, ask one question: "what did we know, and when did we know it?" Nine times out of ten the squad had the information to win and didn't share it, or shared it and didn't act on one voice. Fixing that is free MMR.

Run those for a week and your squad will communicate better than 90 percent of lobbies — not because you learned secret vocabulary, but because you built the boring machinery that makes information move faster than bullets.

  • Keep your tone flat — calm comms process faster than panicked ones
  • After lost fights, ask "what did we know and when?" and fix the information gap
