Tears of the Kingdom Lynels: All 34 Locations and HP

Breath of the Wild had 22 Lynels. Tears of the Kingdom has 34, and 19 of them are in the Depths, including every Silver Lynel on Thonky's list. There is no Monster Medal for them, so here is the full list by variant, what each one can take, what changed in the fight, and the 111 Lynel parts the Great Fairies will eventually ask you for.

A striped Lynel with glowing red eyes and a dark spiked mane emerging from red-black gloom in a Tears of the Kingdom cutscene, with a second Lynel half-visible to its right among drifting embers.

Thonky counts 34 Lynels in Tears of the Kingdom. Breath of the Wild had 22 across Hyrule, per Zelda Wiki, before Master Mode and DLC extras. And of the new 34, nineteen are in the Depths, including all three Silver Lynels on Thonky's list.

Lynels also have no Monster Medal. Gralens counts six other species, which our Monster Medals guide covers, but not these. This guide does: every Lynel by variant and layer, what each variant can take, what changed in the fight since the last game, and the 111 Lynel parts the Great Fairies will ask for. Locations and coordinates come from Thonky's Lynel list. HP, behaviour, drops and upgrade costs come from Zelda Wiki.

34 Lynels, and 19 of them are underground

Sorting Thonky's 34 rows by variant and by whether the elevation is negative (the Depths) gives this:

VariantHPSurfaceDepthsTotal
Lynel2,000538
Blue-Maned Lynel3,0007714
White-Maned Lynel4,000369
Silver Lynel5,000033
Total151934

Five of the 19 Depths Lynels are the Floating Coliseum's waves, which leaves 14 out in the open dark.

One caveat on the variant column. Zelda Wiki says Tears of the Kingdom's World Level system works much as Breath of the Wild's did, where enemies are replaced by stronger counterparts as hidden thresholds are crossed. Thonky names one variant per spot and doesn't say when in a playthrough it was recorded. Treat the variant as what Thonky saw, and the location as the fixed part.

Every open-dark entry sits next to a named Lightroot, and a lit Lightroot is a fast-travel point, so once you have lit the Depths map most of these are one warp and a short walk away.

The two sources differ on one spot. Zelda Wiki's Silver Lynel page lists its habitats as Beneath Hyrule Castle and the Floating Coliseum. Thonky has a White-Maned Lynel down the Hyrule Castle Chasm and puts its only open-dark Silver east of Wetland Stable's footprint instead. Neither says why.

Thirteen stables, one gap

Zelda Wiki's Depths page puts it in one line: stables on the Surface have Lynels near their locations in the Depths. Thonky's list bears that out for 13 of Hyrule's 14 full stables. Nine Depths Lynels stand directly beneath one, and four more stand just off one: Riverside, New Serenne, Snowfield and Wetland.

The gap is Tabantha Bridge Stable. Thonky lists no Depths Lynel under it. It does list a surface Lynel just southwest of the stable, so that corner of Hyrule isn't Lynel-free.

Their HP did not move

VariantTotK HPBotW HP
Lynel2,0002,000
Blue-Maned Lynel3,0003,000
White-Maned Lynel4,0004,000
Silver Lynel5,0005,000

All four are unchanged from Breath of the Wild, per the infoboxes on Zelda Wiki's four Lynel pages. That puts them with the Hinox, which also stayed at 600, and not with the Stone Talus, which went from 300 to 380. The Monster Medals guide has the full sub-boss tables.

The number worth knowing is the Floating Coliseum's. Its five waves, per Zelda Wiki, are a Lynel, a Blue-Maned, a White-Maned, then two Silvers, the last in Rock Armor. That adds up to 19,000 HP fought back to back, by my arithmetic. The coliseum's Lynels also ignore both the Lynel Mask and Majora's Mask, the mask that sits in its chest. The Depths guide covers the arena itself.

What changed in the fight

The core loop is still Breath of the Wild's: the 30-second stare-down, mounting, headshots. Our Breath of the Wild Lynel guide covers those basics. Zelda Wiki flags its Tears of the Kingdom Lynel section as below its own quality standards, so treat this list as what it documents so far:

  • The charge turns more sharply, and their aim now depends on how far away Link is.
  • They can shoot backwards. Elemental arrows are gone: every variant's spoils list an Arrow x10 bundle and nothing elemental.
  • A melee hit from behind doesn't instantly alert them.
  • Mounting has changed. How many strikes Link gets before he is thrown off now depends on how often he has already done it. If he runs out of stamina on its back, he takes the Lynel's base damage, where Breath of the Wild charged a quarter heart.
  • Some wear Rock Armor. It absorbs most attacks. Explosions and Crushing weapons break it, and a rock-armoured Lynel turns aggressive after any attack, even one the armour soaked.
  • Their roar destroys Zonai devices and anything built with Autobuild if they are close by. Park the hoverbike well away.
  • Dazzlefruit does nothing to them.

What starts a fight now

Zelda Wiki lists several new triggers and a few old ones that no longer count:

  • Drawing a bow at any distance sets one off. So does trying to draw one while facing it with no bow equipped, and so does the Earthwake Technique. Provoked this way, it skips the stare-down.
  • If Link is off the ground when the 30 seconds run out, it skips the roar and opens with arrows.
  • Hitting it with a projectile, such as an arrow or a thrown object, starts the fight even if it never saw him.
  • Mounting without attacking, a Parry, or a block with a strong shield no longer sends it into its enraged state.
  • A bomb that catches it in the blast without a direct hit doesn't count as an attack, so if it then spots you, you get the stare-down instead.
  • A Shock Emitter does nothing and doesn't provoke it. Flame and Frost Emitters do no damage, but they always provoke.

Masks got one upgrade. If a Lynel spots Link bare-faced and he then puts on the Lynel Mask or Majora's Mask, it "forgets" and lets him walk up. That doesn't work mid-fight, and Breath of the Wild didn't allow it at all. The Lynel Mask is one of Koltin's Bubbul Gem trades at four gems. The cave guide has his full ladder.

Who throws fire

  • A regular Lynel only spits fireballs once it is at or below half health. The other three variants can do it at any time.
  • The fire dome is a White-Maned move with any weapon. A Silver Lynel only uses it while holding a one-handed weapon. Silvers with two-handers or spears are limited to fireballs.

That last rule matters because Tears of the Kingdom Lynels don't carry Breath of the Wild's Lynel swords; Zelda Wiki's Lynel Sword page lists Breath of the Wild and Echoes of Wisdom as its main games, not Tears of the Kingdom. The wiki's wave list for the Floating Coliseum arms the first four Lynels with Hylian gear (a Soldier's Broadsword, a Soldier's Claymore, a Knight's Halberd and a Royal Broadsword) and the fifth, the rock-armoured Silver, with a Spiked-Iron-Ball Hammer. The Royal Broadsword sits with the first Silver, which is the one that can drop the dome on you.

What each variant drops

SilverLynel Hoof, Lynel Guts, Saber Horn, Mace Horn, Arrow x1055 / 15051 / 150

Each variant drops horns of its own tier. A Blue-Maned Lynel drops Blue-Maned Lynel horns, and so on. Lynel Hooves sell for 50 rupees and add 10 when fused, and their inventory text says they boost an arrow's attack power. Lynel Guts sell for 200. Lynels in the Depths can also drop Large Zonai Charges.

Three things in that table are worth a second look.

The two horns do different jobs. The Mace Horn is always 4 below its Saber Horn, but Zelda Wiki says the Silver Mace Horn makes a weapon Crushing, so it can break Hard Sediment, while Saber Horns make sharp weapons. Our Fuse guide ranks them against everything else.

The plain Lynel's list has no Lynel Guts. Zelda Wiki's spoils list and its Hyrule Compendium entry for the regular Lynel name the hoof, both horns and arrows, while the other three variants all list Lynel Guts. The wiki doesn't publish Tears of the Kingdom drop rates, so this is a gap in a list, not a measured zero. Still, if you want guts, fight a maned Lynel.

Silver Lynels lost their gems. Zelda Wiki's Breath of the Wild spoils list for the Silver Lynel includes Topaz, Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond and Star Fragment. Its Tears of the Kingdom list has none of them. The money is in the horns now.

The Great Fairies want 111 Lynel parts

A Silver Lynel from the Tears of the Kingdom Hyrule Compendium standing in a grassy valley, purple-and-white striped body, dark mane and branching gold horns, holding a long two-handed sword across its body.

I totalled every Lynel material in Zelda Wiki's armor enhancement table. It comes to 111 parts across 13 armor pieces:

ArmorLevelLynel parts per pieceAlso needs
Barbarian set (3 pieces)★★2 Lynel Saber Horns, 2 Lynel Mace Horns5 Razorshrooms
Barbarian set★★★3 Blue-Maned Saber Horns, 3 Blue-Maned Mace Horns3 Razorclaw Crabs
Barbarian set★★★★3 White-Maned Saber Horns, 3 White-Maned Mace Horns3 Bladed Rhino Beetles
Soldier's set (3 pieces)★★★★5 Lynel Hooves, 5 Lynel Guts30 Amber
Radiant set (3 pieces)★★★★3 Lynel Guts30 Luminous Stones, 3 Molduga Jaws
Fierce Deity set (3 pieces)★★★★2 Lynel Guts1 Dinraal's, Naydra's or Farosh's Horn
Ancient Hero's Aspect★★★★9 Silver Saber Horns, 9 Silver Mace Horns9 Gleeok Guts

By material, that's 30 Lynel Guts and 15 Lynel Hooves, plus 12 regular, 18 Blue-Maned, 18 White-Maned and 18 Silver horns.

Read it as a ladder and the Barbarian set is the interesting one. Its last three stars line up with the variants, one tier each: regular horns for two stars, Blue-Maned for three, White-Maned for four. Its first star costs three Mighty Thistles and no Lynel at all. Fully upgraded it reaches 20 defense a piece.

The Soldier's set is the sleeper. Zelda Wiki's table takes each piece to 28 defense at four stars, 84 for the set. That's the same ceiling as the Zonaite and Of the Wild sets in our armor guide, and its last star is paid in Lynel Hooves and Guts.

How many kills is that? Zelda Wiki says each Lynel now drops its Saber Horn and Mace Horn on defeat. If every kill yields one of each, the horns turn straight into a kill count: 6 regular Lynels, 9 Blue-Maned and 9 White-Maned for the Barbarian set, and 9 Silvers for the Aspect. That's 33 kills, one short of the number of Lynels on the map. Hooves and guts are harder to plan, because the wiki gives no Tears of the Kingdom drop rates for them. Our rupee guide prices the same guts and Silver horns as things you could sell instead.

Where to farm each tier

  1. Regular horns (6 kills). Five of Thonky's eight plain Lynels are on the surface. Four of them (Lindor's Brow, Tabantha Bridge, the Rito Village hills and south of New Serenne) sit in the map's northwest quarter by their coordinates; the fifth is by Skull Lake in Akkala.
  2. Blue-Maned (9 kills). This is the most common variant, at 14 on Thonky's list. Three surface ones cluster between the Lanayru Wetlands and Kakariko Village: the two east and northeast of Kakariko stand about 490 map units apart by their coordinates, the closest surface pair on the list, and the Wetlands one is about 550 from the northeast one.
  3. White-Maned (9 kills). Six of the nine are underground, under or beside Dueling Peaks, Highland, New Serenne and Snowfield stables, plus the one down the Hyrule Castle Chasm and the coliseum wave.
  4. Silver (9 kills). This is the hard one. Thonky lists three Silvers and two of them are coliseum waves. The Ancient Hero's Aspect alone wants nine of each Silver horn, so unless World Level promotes more Lynels in your file, you are farming Blood Moons. They bring defeated monsters back, and Zelda Wiki puts Tears of the Kingdom's Blood Moon timer at 144 minutes of play.

More Hyrule lives on the Tears of the Kingdom hub, and everything else we are playing is on the Mythras blog.

Quick Action Checklist

  • 34 Lynels on Thonky's list: 8 Lynel, 14 Blue-Maned, 9 White-Maned, 3 Silver. 15 are on the surface and 19 in the Depths, 5 of those in the Floating Coliseum.
  • Every Silver Lynel on the list is underground: two in the coliseum, one east of Korakut Lightroot, below the ground just east of Wetland Stable.
  • Depths Lynels sit under or near 13 of the 14 full stables. Tabantha Bridge Stable is the gap on Thonky's list.
  • HP is unchanged from Breath of the Wild: 2,000, 3,000, 4,000 and 5,000. The coliseum's five waves total 19,000.
  • Don't draw a bow near one unless you want the fight. It provokes at any distance and skips the stare-down.
  • Keep Zonai builds away. A Lynel's roar wrecks nearby Zonai devices and Autobuild creations.
  • Regular Lynels only throw fireballs below half health. Silvers only use the fire dome with a one-handed weapon.
  • Fight maned Lynels for guts. The plain Lynel's spoils list doesn't include them.
  • The armor tree wants 111 Lynel parts: 30 guts, 15 hooves, and 12 regular, 18 Blue-Maned, 18 White-Maned and 18 Silver horns.
  • The Soldier's set reaches 84 defense too, and its last star costs 5 hooves and 5 guts per piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Lynels are in Tears of the Kingdom?
Thonky's location list counts 34 Lynels in Tears of the Kingdom, up from the 22 Zelda Wiki counts in Breath of the Wild. By variant, Thonky has 8 regular Lynels, 14 Blue-Maned, 9 White-Maned and 3 Silver Lynels. Fifteen are on the Surface and 19 in the Depths, and five of the Depths Lynels are the waves of the Floating Coliseum beneath the Coliseum Ruins. There is no Monster Medal for Lynels.
Where are the Silver Lynels in Tears of the Kingdom?
Thonky lists three Silver Lynels in Tears of the Kingdom, all in the Depths. Two are the fourth and fifth waves of the Floating Coliseum, beneath the Coliseum Ruins in Central Hyrule. The third stands at coordinates 1047, -0284, -0468, east of Korakut Lightroot, beneath the area east of Wetland Stable on the Surface. Zelda Wiki lists Silver Lynel habitats as Beneath Hyrule Castle and the Floating Coliseum, and says the World Level system can replace enemies with stronger counterparts, so the Silver count in a given save file may differ.
How much HP do Lynels have in Tears of the Kingdom?
In Tears of the Kingdom a regular Lynel has 2,000 HP, a Blue-Maned Lynel 3,000, a White-Maned Lynel 4,000 and a Silver Lynel 5,000, the same values as in Breath of the Wild according to Zelda Wiki. The Floating Coliseum's five waves (one regular, one Blue-Maned, one White-Maned and two Silver Lynels) add up to 19,000 HP fought back to back.
Is there a Lynel under every stable in Tears of the Kingdom?
Almost. Zelda Wiki says stables on the Surface have Lynels near their locations in the Depths, and Thonky's Lynel list places a Depths Lynel beneath or beside 13 of the 14 full stables in Tears of the Kingdom: directly beneath East Akkala, South Akkala, Foothill, Woodland, Gerudo Canyon, Lakeside, Outskirt, Dueling Peaks and Highland, and just off Riverside, New Serenne, Snowfield and Wetland. Thonky lists no Depths Lynel under Tabantha Bridge Stable.
What do Lynels drop in Tears of the Kingdom?
Zelda Wiki's spoils lists give every Lynel variant in Tears of the Kingdom a Lynel Hoof, a Saber Horn and a Mace Horn of its own tier, plus a bundle of 10 arrows. Blue-Maned, White-Maned and Silver Lynels also list Lynel Guts, which the regular Lynel's spoils list omits. Saber and Mace Horns sell for 40 rupees from a regular Lynel, 70 from a Blue-Maned, 90 from a White-Maned and 150 from a Silver, and Lynels in the Depths can also drop Large Zonai Charges. Silver Lynels no longer list the gems and Star Fragment they dropped in Breath of the Wild.
Which armor needs Lynel parts in Tears of the Kingdom?
Thirteen armor pieces in Tears of the Kingdom ask for Lynel parts at a Great Fairy, 111 parts in total per Zelda Wiki's enhancement table. The Barbarian set takes regular, Blue-Maned and White-Maned Lynel Saber and Mace Horns at two, three and four stars. The Soldier's set takes 5 Lynel Hooves and 5 Lynel Guts per piece at four stars, the Radiant set 3 Lynel Guts per piece, and the Fierce Deity set 2 Lynel Guts per piece. The Ancient Hero's Aspect takes 9 Silver Lynel Saber Horns and 9 Silver Lynel Mace Horns at four stars.
Does the Lynel Mask work in Tears of the Kingdom?
Yes, with one new trick. In Tears of the Kingdom, if a Lynel spots Link without a disguise and he then puts on the Lynel Mask or Majora's Mask, the Lynel forgets and lets him approach, which Breath of the Wild did not allow. It does not work once a fight has started, and the Lynels in the Floating Coliseum ignore both masks. The Lynel Mask costs four Bubbul Gems at Koltin's Stall, and Cece sells replacements for 4,000 rupees.
