How to Beat Malenia in Elden Ring: Full Boss Guide
Bandai Namco's own anniversary infographic counted 329 million attempts against Malenia, Blade of Miquella in one year — more than any other boss the infographic broke out. The reason isn't her health bar, it's the mechanic layered on top of it: she heals off almost everything she lands. Here is her full moveset, phase by phase, the resistances that actually work, a verified damage-reduction stack, and what patches have and have not changed about the fight.

Bandai Namco's own one-year anniversary infographic, released in March 2023, put a number on Malenia specifically: 329 million attempts against Malenia, Blade of Miquella in the game's first twelve months, more than any other boss the publisher broke out — in a game where she is entirely optional.
The reason isn't her health bar, and it isn't really Waterfowl Dance either, not on its own. It's one mechanic layered under everything she does: she heals off nearly every attack that connects, blocked or not. A fight you are winning can undo four seconds of your work in a single bad trade. Here is exactly what that means, her moveset broken into what's dangerous and what's noise, and what patches have and have not touched about her since 2022.
This is a fight guide, not an access guide — if you still need to find her, the boss order guide covers where she sits in the run and why she's worth saving for last.
Where the fight is, and what it costs to get there
Malenia is fought at the bottom of Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, in an open cavern immediately past the Haligtree Roots Site of Grace. Her arena has no obstacles and a shallow pool of water at its center — more on that pool below. She's an optional Remembrance boss: nothing in the main campaign requires killing her, and both multiplayer summons and Spirit Ashes are permitted for the fight.
The mechanic that runs this fight: she heals off every hit
Elden Ring's own boss data states it plainly: she regains lost HP with every successful attack, even if the attack is blocked. That single line is the whole fight. It means turtling behind a shield doesn't deny her anything, it means a single mistimed dodge can erase a full combo's worth of your damage, and it means every other piece of advice below — resistances, stagger, stance — matters only because it's how you stop her from touching you in the first place.
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| HP — Phase 1 | 18,473 |
| HP — Phase 2 | 14,778 |
| HP — total | 33,251 |
| Defense | 123 |
| Stance (poise) | 80 |
| Rune reward | 480,000 |
| Drops | Malenia's Great Rune, Remembrance of the Rot Goddess |
The 480,000-rune drop and the Remembrance's own rewards — the Hand of Malenia katana and the Scarlet Aeonia incantation — are covered stat-for-stat in the Remembrance rewards guide; what Malenia's Great Rune actually does to your flask is in the Great Runes guide. Both numbers above match Elden Ring's own boss data page for her, cross-checked against the Elden Ring Wiki.
Phase 1: Blade of Miquella's moveset

In phase 1 she fights entirely with her sword, dealing Standard, Slash and Pierce damage. Her moveset:
| Attack | What it does |
|---|---|
| Slash | Horizontal sword slash, sometimes chained into multiple hits; can lunge to close distance first |
| Grab | Steps back, then lunges to grab you — impales and slams if it connects. Cancel it with damage during the wind-up, or dodge to the side |
| Running Slash | Strafes around you before slashing horizontally |
| Upwards Slash | Leaps and swings up, then comes down with a downward slash |
| Kick | A spin-kick |
| Rapid Slashes | Three quick slices, then a fourth after a short delay |
| Thrust | Leaps and thrusts forward |
| Waterfowl Dance | Her signature attack — covered on its own below |
The fight's one piece of genuinely good news: she staggers easily, and her wind-up animations can be interrupted by attacking into them. Blood loss and frostbite buildup are specifically effective at staggering her out of an attack entirely — which matters, because interrupting her is the one way to stop a heal before it happens rather than dodging around it.
Waterfowl Dance, hit by hit
Waterfowl Dance is a leap into the air, a brief hover, then four bursts of rapid slashes that home in on you individually, each burst covering more ground than the last. Elden Ring's own moveset data calls it out directly: it is genuinely difficult to dodge at close range, but it is possible to roll through the attacks or simply run away from them.
Two dodge approaches, both grounded in that same principle:
- Create distance first. If you're already several meters out when she leaps, run backward through the first two bursts, then roll toward her — the third and fourth bursts are aimed at where you were, not where you're going, and tend to miss.
- Interrupt it before it starts. Because her wind-ups are interruptible and blood/frost buildup staggers her, a weapon that's already built meaningful bleed or frost against her can cancel Waterfowl Dance before the leap even finishes.
Bloodhound's Step — the Ash of War usable on almost any melee weapon, which grants brief invisibility and a longer, faster dodge than a standard roll — is a useful tool for closing the gap on this attack cleanly. It is weaker than it used to be: patch 1.06 (9 August 2022) cut its travel distance, its invincibility frames, and its performance when used repeatedly. It still works against Waterfowl Dance; it's no longer the free pass it was at launch.
One structural note worth knowing before you're in the fight: Elden Ring Wiki's own testing states that Malenia's first phase cannot be ended by a critical hit or by status/damage-over-time effects — she's held at 1 HP until a standard, non-critical attack lands. If you're chipping her with scarlet rot or poison procs and she stalls at a sliver of health, that's why.
Phase 2: Goddess of Rot
Once phase 1's health bar hits zero, a transformation cutscene plays and Malenia, Goddess of Rot begins phase 2 already down to 80% of her own health pool — not a fresh full bar, and not a continuation of phase 1's pool either; her phase 2 total of 14,778 is a separate number from phase 1's 18,473. She now deals Holy damage alongside Standard, Slash and Pierce, and most of her attacks in this phase can inflict scarlet rot buildup on top of raw damage.
Her added phase 2 moveset:
| Attack | What it does |
|---|---|
| Scarlet Aeonia | Scripted opener — dives and plants a giant flower that blooms into a scarlet rot cloud |
| Scarlet Plunge | Leaps and plunges her blade down, detonating rot in front of her |
| Flying Slash | Glides in with a sweeping slash, followed by a thrust |
| Scarlet Phantoms | Creates a rot pool beneath her and releases several phantom copies of herself that slash and thrust before vanishing, then dives herself |
Scarlet Aeonia opens the phase, and it's scripted
Scarlet Aeonia always fires the instant phase 2 begins, before you get a hit in. Elden Ring Wiki's guidance is specific and worth following exactly: it can be avoided from any range by sprinting sideways until the flower finishes blooming. Standing still or moving toward her is how this attack ends runs that survived all of phase 1 clean.

What actually hurts her
Malenia's resistance profile, straight from Elden Ring's own boss data:
| Damage type | Negation / resistance |
|---|---|
| Standard, Strike, Slash, Pierce | 10% negation each |
| Magic | 20% negation |
| Lightning | 20% negation (10% while she's standing in the arena's water) |
| Fire | 0% negation (her listed weakness) |
| Holy | 40% negation — the highest on her chart |
| Poison / Scarlet Rot | 1,481 buildup resistance — very high, don't bother |
| Bleed (Hemorrhage) | 421 buildup resistance — comparatively low, and a listed weakness |
| Frostbite | 306 buildup resistance — her lowest of the four buildup stats, and a listed weakness |
| Sleep | 689 buildup resistance |
| Madness, Death | Immune |
Three things follow directly from that table. First, holy weapons and incantations are close to the worst tool you can bring — 40% negation is her single highest stat. Second, poisoning or rotting her is close to pointless: 1,481 buildup resistance is more than three times her bleed resistance, so a rot- or poison-focused weapon will rarely proc before the fight is already decided by something else. Third, fire, bleed and frostbite are her named weaknesses, and frostbite's real value isn't the proc damage — it's the 20% damage-amplification debuff a frost proc applies for 30 seconds afterward, which is covered in full in the status effects guide.
The arena's water pool is a small, easily-missed lever: standing in it raises her fire negation to 10% (worse for burning her there) and drops her lightning negation to 10% (better) simultaneously — it's listed on her own combat data, not a community rumor.
A damage-reduction stack from three slots that don't compete
Because so much of this fight comes down to "don't get hit, and if you do, survive it," three separate, verified pieces of gear stack because they live in three different systems that never fight each other for a slot:
| Source | Effect | Slot |
|---|---|---|
| Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman | 20% physical damage reduction | Talisman (persistent) |
| Golden Vow (incantation) | +10% damage negation, all types, 80 seconds | Aura buff |
| Opaline Hardtear (Wondrous Physick) | +15% damage negation, all types, 3 minutes | Physick tear |
None of these compete: talismans are persistent effects that stack freely with everything, Golden Vow occupies the single Aura buff slot on its own, and Physick tears run independently of both. Run the multiplication and it's real: 0.80 × 0.90 × 0.85 = 0.612, which is roughly 39% less damage taken across the whole fight, before armor. The talismans guide and Wondrous Physick guide cover where to find the talisman and tear and what else competes for those slots.
Stance breaks: why solo with a Spirit Ash beats co-op here
Malenia's stance value is 80, and per Elden Ring's own data she must be parried three times in a row to trigger a stance break and open her up for a critical hit — the same threshold covered generally in the stance-break guide, which is also where the harder numbers on charged-heavy and guard-counter stance damage live.
One rule from that guide is worth repeating here specifically: a summoned player or NPC ally cuts your own stance damage against a boss by 40% — Spirit Ashes do not carry that penalty. Against a fight this punishing for a mistimed hit, that's a real reason to bring a Spirit Ash to split her attention rather than call for co-op help, if stance-breaking her for a critical is part of your plan.
What patches have actually changed about this fight
Every official patch note that names Malenia the boss, checked against Bandai Namco's own patch archive:
- 1.04.1 (27 April 2022) — "Fixed a bug with Malenia, Blade of Miquella in which her HP was not healed correctly in the online multiplayer environment." A hotfix to a bug that had made her heal excessively in co-op, not a nerf to her intended healing.
- 1.05 — "Fixed a bug that caused the boss 'Malenia, Goddess of Rot' to have low HP under certain circumstances." Another bug fix, this time to phase 2.
- 1.06 (9 August 2022) — Did not touch Malenia or Waterfowl Dance directly. It increased general roll distance for light equip load and, separately, cut Bloodhound's Step's travel distance and invincibility frames — the indirect changes noted above.
No patch note from Bandai Namco has ever named Waterfowl Dance itself. If you've heard "they nerfed Waterfowl Dance," that specific change isn't in anything the publisher has actually shipped — what changed is the general roll and Bloodhound's Step adjustments in 1.06, which happen to affect how easy she feels to dodge without the attack itself being touched.
Quick Action Checklist
- The healing is the fight. Every connecting hit — even a blocked one — restores her HP. Dodging and interrupting matter more here than in almost any other fight in the game.
- Waterfowl Dance is dodgeable, not unfair. Run it out at range, roll in on the third and fourth bursts up close, or interrupt the wind-up with bleed or frost buildup before she leaps.
- Bloodhound's Step still helps, but it's not what it was at launch — patch 1.06 cut its distance, i-frames and repeat performance.
- She's held at 1 HP if you finish phase 1 with a critical hit or a status proc rather than standard damage.
- Sprint sideways the instant phase 2 starts — Scarlet Aeonia is scripted and unavoidable in place, but easy to clear moving.
- Skip holy, skip rot/poison. Bring fire, bleed or frost instead — all three are her named weaknesses, and frost's 20% damage-amp debuff is worth more than its proc.
- Stack Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman + Golden Vow + Opaline Hardtear for roughly 39% less damage taken from three slots that don't compete with each other.
- Bring a Spirit Ash over a co-op summon if a stance-break critical is part of the plan — player summons cut your own stance damage by 40%, Spirit Ashes don't.
