Half-Life 2 Co-op: The Synergy Mod Explained

One line in this vertical's own console commands guide points at Synergy and moves on. That line undersells a mod with more Steam reviews than most 2005 releases, a November 2024 rewrite that more than tripled its player cap, and a networking overhaul that quietly killed the one thing that used to make Half-Life 2 co-op a router-configuration chore.

This vertical's own console commands guide mentions Half-Life 2 co-op exactly once, in one sentence, to say the hacky maxplayers 4; sv_lan 1 console trick is not the real answer and "the wiki points anyone serious about co-op at the Synergy mod instead." Then it moves on to the next cheat code.

That line has been sitting there undersold. Synergy is a free, Steam-distributed Source mod that lets you and up to several dozen friends play the actual Half-Life 2 campaign, Lost Coast, Episode One and Episode Two together, and as of late 2024 it stopped being the kind of project you had to already know a Discord server to find working instructions for. A rewrite fixed years of crashes, more than tripled the player cap, and — the detail that actually matters if you have ever tried to get a friend into a Source game — began killing off the requirement to forward a port on your router just to let someone connect.

What Synergy actually is

Synergy is a standalone, free-to-play entry on Steam (app 17520), developed by a volunteer group called the Synergy Team, and it requires that you own Half-Life 2. Its lineage runs back further than most Half-Life 2 mods still receiving updates: Combine OverWiki traces it to two predecessor projects, Dev Coop and DC Cooperative 2, active since 2003, with Synergy itself entering development in early 2005 and first releasing that September.

Twenty-one years on, it is not a curiosity. As of this writing, Synergy's Steam page carries 11,723 reviews across all languages at an overall "Very Positive" rating, with its English-language reviews sitting at 89% positive out of 5,529, and a Metacritic score of 82. Steam Deck compatibility is listed as Playable. That is a larger review count than plenty of full-priced 2005-era releases manage in their lifetime, for a mod most Half-Life 2 owners have never opened.

What you can actually play in it

The Steam description is blunt about the scope: "Synergy enables you to play through the Half-Life 2 series and many other singleplayer Source Mods cooperatively with friends." Concretely, that means the full Half-Life 2 campaign, Lost Coast, and Episode One and Episode Two, all playable start to finish with a group rather than solo.

It goes further than Valve's own content, too. A 2015 update from the official Synergy site logged content support added for several other Source titles' assets — Age of Chivalry, Counter-Strike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source, Dystopia, Eternal Silence, Half-Life 2: Update, NEOTOKYO, Portal, Team Fortress 2 and Zombie Panic: Source among them — which is what lets fan-made cooperative maps built on those games' assets run inside Synergy. Community campaigns get the same treatment: MINERVA: Metastasis, the tight solo campaign covered in the mods guide, has been playable in Synergy since 2009 and starts with the console command map metastasis_1.

The 20th Anniversary Update almost broke it

For nine years, none of this changed. Synergy's own Steam announcement for version 24.11, posted Wednesday, November 27, 2024, opens by admitting it: "It's been a long time. The last official Synergy update was way back in 2015!" The team had been quietly working in a development branch with no public releases, and Valve's 20th Anniversary Update to the base game forced their hand — the anniversary build introduced changes that broke Synergy outright, and the team pushed 24.11 out earlier than planned specifically to catch up.

What 24.11 actually fixed, per that announcement, reads like a mod finally getting the maintenance pass a decade had denied it: numerous crashes including the "infamous 'unconnected' player bug," jittering player models, absurd map-specific difficulty spikes in the Half-Life 2 campaign, broken level transitions on backtracking maps, and invisible viewmodels under some conditions. It also added things the mod never had — saved-game support that restores connected players when a host reloads, Steam Cloud sync for settings and saves, Steam Workshop support for dedicated servers, official Linux dedicated server support, and initial native Steam Deck support (the team's own caveat: "UI still leaves a lot to be desired"). A hotfix, 24.11.1, followed two days later on November 29 for a softlock in an Episode Two map.

If you tried Synergy before late 2024 and it crashed or refused to connect, that version is the reason. It has been rewritten since.

Player counts, and the annual Rebel Rush event

The same 24.11 update raised Synergy's standard maximum player count from 10 to 32 — a bump the team buried in a single bullet point at the bottom of a long changelog, which undersells it. Ten was the ceiling this mod had shipped with since 2015.

That is not actually the highest number Synergy has run, though. Once a year the team hosts Rebel Rush, an organized one-day community playthrough of the entire Half-Life 2 series on a dedicated high-end server, coordinated through the Half-Life Discord. The most recent one, Rebel Rush 2025, ran for about 10 hours starting Saturday, November 15, 2025, on a special rebelrush Steam beta branch, and the announcement said outright it would be "doubling the player limit from 127 to 255" compared to the previous year's event. Reaching that ceiling took real engineering, not just a config change — the team said they'd applied "many performance optimizations" since the prior Rebel Rush specifically to support it, and still expected "a few moments of lag and perhaps a crash or two" pushing the Source engine that far past its design envelope.

Rebel Rush also carries the mod's only Steam achievement. It is called Rebel Rusher, its description is simply "Participate in a Rebel Rush event," and as of this writing it has been earned by 0.2% of all players who own Synergy — a number that makes sense once you know it is tied to a single scheduled day a year rather than anything you can unlock on your own.

Connecting to a friend without port forwarding

Here is the update that actually matters for a normal two-or-three-person session, and it landed in two pieces right after the November rewrite.

Version 24.12.1, posted December 17, 2024, added backend support for Steam Networking — the team's own framing was direct: "This means you can play Synergy with your friends without the hoster needing to port forward their listen client or dedicated server." Version 24.12.2, posted December 31, 2024, went further and made it the default: Synergy now routes internet connections through Valve's Steam Datagram Relay (SDR) automatically, which hides your IP address from anyone you connect to, encrypts traffic in both directions, and — for anyone running a dedicated server — anonymizes its public IP so port forwarding is no longer required for it to appear in a server browser at all.

Two things worth knowing before you plan an evening around this. First, connecting to someone on your own LAN still bypasses the relay and goes direct, exactly as before, because routing local traffic over the internet just to come back would add latency for nothing. Second, as of the most recent documented update, there is still no one-click "join game" button through the Steam friends list — the December 31 notes say plainly that "UI updates are still in progress to make playing with Steam friends easier," and nothing in Synergy's Steam announcement feed since has said that shipped. The console workaround below is the current method, and it works today.

Hosting a game

Launch Synergy and start a game the normal way — a listen server starts automatically and behaves the same way it always has. Open the developer console and type status. One of the printed lines will look like steamid : [A;1;123456789:03210] (01234567890123456); the long number in parentheses is your SteamID64. Send that number to whoever is joining you.

Joining a game

With your host's SteamID64 in hand, open the console and type connect followed by that number — for example connect 01234567890123456. This works against both listen servers and dedicated servers, and a dedicated server's status output prints its own SteamID64 the same way if the host needs to share it. Neither side needs to touch their router.

Installing it is not like installing MMod

If you have already read the best mods guide, you know Source mods split into two camps: standalone Steam entries you just install, and classic mods that need the free Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer tool dropped into a sourcemods folder first. Synergy is the first kind. It has its own Steam store page, its own "Install now" button, and nothing to unzip anywhere. Add it to your library, install it, and it launches like any other game — the only prerequisite is owning Half-Life 2 itself.

Where to actually get help

One honest caveat: do not go looking for current information on Synergy's own official website. It still exists at synergymod.net, but the front page's most recent post is dated May 2015, and the site itself throws visible PHP warnings on load. It is a relic of the pre-2024 era this guide has spent most of its length describing.

The places that are actually current are all linked directly from Synergy's Steam page: the Steam Events feed for patch notes (where every update cited in this guide was posted), the team's Discord, and a public issue tracker on GitLab (gitlab.com/SynergyMod/Synergy) for bug reports. If a future patch changes anything in this guide, that is where it will show up first.

Quick Action Checklist

  • Install Synergy from Steam (app 17520). It is free, standalone, and only requires that you own Half-Life 2 — no Source SDK Base setup needed.
  • Expect crashes and a 10-player cap if you somehow end up on a pre-November-2024 build; update to 24.11 or later.
  • To host: start a game, type status in the console, and send your SteamID64 to whoever is joining.
  • To join: type connect followed by your host's SteamID64. Port forwarding is not required for either side since the December 2024 Steam Networking update.
  • There is still no one-click Steam friends invite button as of the most recent patch — the console command above is the current method.
  • Watch for the annual Rebel Rush event (Rebel Rush 2025 ran 255 players on November 15, 2025) if you want the mod's one achievement, Rebel Rusher.
  • Try MINERVA: Metastasis inside Synergy with map metastasis_1 once the base campaigns are done.
  • Get current patch notes from Synergy's Steam Events feed or Discord, not from synergymod.net, which has not been updated since 2015.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to play Half-Life 2 co-op?
Synergy, a free standalone mod on Steam (app 17520), is the tool built specifically for this. It lets a group play the Half-Life 2 campaign, Lost Coast, Episode One and Episode Two cooperatively, plus community campaigns like MINERVA: Metastasis and content from several other Source games. It requires owning Half-Life 2, installs directly from Steam with no extra setup, and received a major stability and networking rewrite in late 2024 after nine years without an update.
How do you play Half-Life 2 co-op with a friend without port forwarding?
Since Synergy's December 31, 2024 update (version 24.12.2), the mod routes internet connections through Valve's Steam Datagram Relay by default, which removes the port-forwarding requirement for both listen servers and dedicated servers. To connect, the host types status in the developer console to get their SteamID64, shares it with the joining player, who then types connect followed by that number. There is not yet a one-click Steam friends invite button, so this console method is the current way to link up.
How many players can play Half-Life 2 co-op at once in Synergy?
Synergy's standard maximum was raised from 10 to 32 players in the November 27, 2024 update, version 24.11. The mod also runs an annual community event called Rebel Rush on a special high-player-count server branch; Rebel Rush 2025, held November 15, 2025, ran with a 255-player cap, doubled from 127 the previous year, and required extra performance optimizations to reach.
What is the Rebel Rush event in Half-Life 2: Synergy?
Rebel Rush is Synergy's annual community event, coordinated through the Half-Life Discord, where the Half-Life 2 campaign and its episodes are played cooperatively on one heavily populated dedicated server for about ten hours. Rebel Rush 2025 ran on November 15, 2025, with a player cap of 255. It is also the only way to earn Synergy's single Steam achievement, Rebel Rusher, held by 0.2% of players as of this writing, since it is granted for participating in the event rather than for anything achievable outside it.
Do you need the Source SDK to install Synergy for Half-Life 2?
No. Unlike classic Source mods such as MMod or MINERVA, which require installing the free Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer tool and dropping a mod folder into the sourcemods directory, Synergy is a standalone Steam application with its own store page and an ordinary Install button. The only requirement listed on its Steam page is owning Half-Life 2.
Does Synergy support Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode Two?
Yes. Synergy's Steam description states it lets players go through the Half-Life 2 series cooperatively, and Combine OverWiki confirms Lost Coast, Episode One and Episode Two are all part of that supported campaign list alongside the base game. All of it runs from a single free Steam install once Half-Life 2 is owned.
