Half-Life 2 G-Man Sightings: Where to Spot Him, Map by Map

Between the opening monologue and the ending, the G-Man turns up twelve more times in Half-Life 2, mostly at a distance or on a screen. Here is where each one is, by chapter and map, plus the three in Episode Two and the ones Valve cut.

The G-Man, briefcase in hand, standing at the railing of Station 7's wooden walkway in front of a weathered red barn, a steel tower and smokestacks on the hazy skyline behind him, in Half-Life 2's Water Hazard chapter.

Half-Life 2 lets the G-Man talk to you twice: the "Rise and shine" monologue that opens Point Insertion, and the frozen-time speech at the end of Dark Energy. In between, he says nothing, and he is still around. He stands on a canal walkway as your airboat comes in. He shows up on a security monitor in Nova Prospekt, adjusting his tie. And through a pair of Combine binoculars on Highway 17, you can watch him chatting with Colonel Cubbage on the top floor of a building across the bay.

Valve wrote an achievement for finding all of them. It was called Eagle Eye, it never shipped, and the achievements guide covers it alongside the rest of the cut list. This page is the checklist Eagle Eye would have needed: the sightings, chapter by chapter and map by map, plus the console-only ones, the three in Episode Two, and the ones Valve built and then deleted.

What counts as a sighting

The opening monologue and the Dark Energy ending are not on this list. They are cutscenes, and you cannot miss them. A sighting is the other kind: the G-Man somewhere he has no reason to be, usually gone by the time you get close. Combine OverWiki's own summary is that outside the finale he is only ever visible from a great distance or on video screens.

Both big Half-Life wikis, Combine OverWiki and the Half-Life Wiki, keep a list of his exact in-game locations. For the PC version of Half-Life 2 the two lists match: twelve sightings. They fall into three groups:

  • Six on screens: monitors, televisions and Breencast displays
  • Five out in the world, all at a distance
  • One hidden in a texture, which nobody can see without editing a screenshot or the texture itself

Four of the twelve are in Water Hazard, which is more than any other chapter has.

All twelve Half-Life 2 sightings, in one table

Map names are the ones both wikis give. The console's map command loads any of them directly, so you can check a single sighting without replaying a chapter. The console commands guide covers switching the console on.

One map name needs a footnote. Both lists put Joe's boxcar on d1_canals_01, but Combine OverWiki's own screenshot of that sighting is labelled d1_canals_01a. If one doesn't drop you at the boxcar, try the other.

Read the chapter column for the gaps as well. Neither wiki lists a PC sighting in Point Insertion, Sandtraps, Entanglement, "Follow Freeman!" or Our Benefactors, and Dark Energy only has the ending.

He does not wait for you

Most of the in-world sightings end the moment you get close or move on, so the trick is noticing them early, not searching for them afterwards.

  • Station 7: OverWiki's Station 7 page says you first see him on the outdoor walkway as you arrive by airboat. Get closer and he disappears into the barn, which is full of zombies.
  • The dam ledge: he's there until you turn the wheel that raises the gate. After that, he's gone.
  • The binoculars: the Half-Life Wiki says that if you look through them a second time, the G-Man and Cubbage have disappeared. He isn't at New Little Odessa when you get there either.
  • Ravenholm's exit: both wikis say he can barely be seen, so slow down when you come out at the end of the chapter.

Two of the screen sightings need you to do something first. You cycle Kleiner's monitor and the Nova Prospekt monitors by using them, and Kleiner's takes a few flips before the G-Man comes up.

Water Hazard is his chapter

Four sightings, all of them on the airboat run through the canals.

The G-Man standing alone on a paved walkway by a railing at the Water Hazard dam under an orange evening sky, power pylons and smokestacks on the hills behind him.

The first two share Station 7's map, d1_canals_06. One is the walkway sighting in this page's header image. The other is a Breencast monitor that flickers his image in among Breen's. According to both wikis, that image comes from texture files in the leaked 2003 build, and it was first seen in Valve's E3 2003 video "Psyche."

The third, on d1_canals_12, comes from above. He watches from a ledge as you drive underneath, so you have to look up while steering.

The fourth is the one with the sign. On d1_canals_13, the last map before Black Mesa East, he stands on a concrete ledge near the gate controls, and a sign points at the spot where he stands. It says "Observation." Both wikis call that a coincidence. This is also the dam map where you finish off the Hunter-Chopper, and Combine OverWiki puts the Singing Vortigaunt's cave on it too, behind the half-open grate on the left-hand pipe past the gate. That puts two of Half-Life 2's secrets on one map. The achievements guide has the route to the cave and its Vorticough achievement. The vehicle chapters guide covers surviving the chopper fight first.

Six of them are on screens

Half the list is the G-Man turning up on Combine and Resistance displays: monitors, televisions and the Breencast screens.

Kleiner's lab (d1_trainstation_05). Cycle the main monitor and one camera feed shows him on the far side of a fence before he walks off. Both wikis add a strange detail. If you noclip to that spot, he is physically there, standing in what appears to be a leftover piece of the leaked build's train station, and he appears to be killable.

Joe's boxcar (Route Kanal). When you drop into the boxcar, its Vortigaunt is powering an old TV that shows the G-Man where Breen should be. Both wikis say he appears to be in the same studio Breen broadcasts from, Combine logo included. Once the Vortigaunt notices you, it stops the transmission.

A Vortigaunt hunched beside an old television on a wooden stand, the G-Man's face filling the screen, with a stencilled RESIST slogan and a pinned map on the red boxcar wall behind it.

Water Hazard's Breencast (d1_canals_06). See above.

Nova Prospekt (d2_prison_02). Near the start of the chapter you cycle a bank of security monitors, and one of them shows him walking up to a door window, looking through at a lambda cache and straightening his tie. The Nova Prospekt guide covers the chapter around it.

The tenement TV (d3_c17_02). This is the strangest one. After a Dropship carries Dog off in Anticitizen One, discordant music starts coming out of a ruined building nearby. Inside is a corridor from much earlier in the game: both wikis identify it as the one that opens d1_trainstation_03 in Point Insertion. Where the exit door used to be there is rubble, and an unplugged television showing the G-Man standing in a wooden boat with a crow on his shoulder. He straightens his tie and the set switches off. According to the Half-Life Wiki, the screen breaks on its own if you get close, unless you pick the TV up with the gravity gun.

A dark room lit only by an old television showing the G-Man standing in a wooden rowing boat with a crow on his shoulder, one hand at his tie.

The music is a real file you can find. The file list for Valve's shipped hl2_sound_misc package includes sound/music/radio1.mp3, the file both wikis name as the tune. There is a follow-up, too. Valve's caption file gives citizens an idle line, "I can't get this tune out of my head," followed by whistling, and both wikis read that as a reference to the same tune.

The plaza Breencast (d3_c17_03). Back in Trainstation Plaza, the giant screen flickers between Breen and the G-Man, the same effect as in the canals, until rebels topple it. Both wikis note that the rebels show no sign of seeing him.

The face nobody found in Eli's lab

Number 7 is the only one you can't spot by looking. In Eli's lab at Black Mesa East (d1_eli_01), one of the units the Vortigaunt is working on has the G-Man's face on its yellow end. OverWiki says the face is only in the texture's blue channel. To see it, you screenshot it and adjust the image, or pull the texture out and isolate that channel.

The source is the artist himself. In a July 5, 2019 tweet, Dhabih Eng, a Valve concept artist who went full-time there in February 1999 according to Combine OverWiki, wrote that "no one ever found the gman face I put in Eli's lab." That was nearly fifteen years after Half-Life 2 came out, and by his account nobody had spotted it in all that time.

Two you only see from far away

Ravenholm's exit (d1_town_05). After you leave Ravenholm, he walks into a tunnel behind a few train cars, right behind Shorepoint Base. Both wikis use the word "barely" for how much of him you see.

New Little Odessa (d2_coast_03). On Highway 17, a squad of Combine soldiers is watching New Little Odessa from a small house across a bay through Combine binoculars. Clear the house and look through them yourself. According to Combine OverWiki, the G-Man and Colonel Odessa Cubbage are talking on the top floor of the settlement's main building. When you arrive at New Little Odessa he's gone, and you are left with Cubbage and the gunship fight the vehicle chapters guide covers.

Xbox and PS3 have a different list

The console ports don't match the PC list, and the differences go both ways.

VersionDifferenceSource
Original Xbox (2005)Adds a 13th sighting on d1_trainstation_01: his image flickers on a large Breencast monitor just before you meet BarneyBoth wikis
Original Xbox (2005)No Highway 17 binoculars sighting. Combine OverWiki says the binoculars themselves aren't in this versionBoth wikis
PlayStation 3Joe's boxcar TV is blank instead of showing the G-ManHalf-Life Wiki

So the only Point Insertion sighting that shipped is on a console. That's one more small item for the platforms guide, which covers what each version does and doesn't include.

Episode One has none, on purpose

Apart from its opening scene, where Vortigaunts pull Gordon out of the G-Man's void while he looks on, Episode One has no sightings at all. Both wikis say so, and Valve said why in the Episode Two developer commentary. In node EP2-Comment117, Valve's Jeff Lind says the team "suppressed G-Man visitations completely to show that he had lost track of Gordon."

That makes the absence part of the story. Episode One is the stretch of the trilogy where the G-Man isn't watching.

Episode Two's three sightings

Since the November 2024 anniversary update, Episode Two has been on Half-Life 2's main menu (the episodes guide covers both Episodes). The G-Man gets back in touch during Alyx's healing in Chapter 2, This Vortal Coil, where he speaks to Gordon directly in a vision. After that he is watching again. The same Lind node puts it plainly: "he is actively watching again. Keep an eye out for him."

The last one has a second witness. Combine OverWiki points out that Alyx is watching the screen when he appears, and suggests it may be what prompts her to pass on the "prepare for unforeseen consequences" message the G-Man gave her in the vision.

The sightings Valve cut

A few more sightings exist only in development files, leaked maps and cut content. The cut content guide covers the WC map pack and the 2003 leak they mostly come from.

  • A flying tram in Point Insertion. The WC map pack's version of d1_trainstation_03 has the G-Man riding on the front of a tram that flies above the street. Both wikis describe it as mirroring his first appearance in Half-Life.
  • Two windows in Ravenholm. The leak's d1_town_01 shows him through a window for a moment before he vanishes. Its d1_town_05 has him standing in a dim room behind a window and staying there, with a chair, a carpet, a headcrab that doesn't attack, and a shotgun with an ammo box on a bed. Retail Ravenholm has no sighting inside the town itself.
  • A crow in a test map. The Half-Life Wiki describes a WC map pack map called ickypop in which a flying crow holds the G-Man in mid-air. The wiki suggests it may have been a test for the tenement TV scene.
  • A tunnel in Episode Two. OverWiki records a removed sighting in Riding Shotgun (ep2_outland_08): the G-Man standing on top of the blocked tunnel beside the helicopter fight arena, then walking away.
  • Two achievements. Eagle Eye ("Find all of the G-Man's appearances in Half-Life 2") is known from strings in a leaked Postal III build. OverWiki also lists a smaller one, Man of Mystery ("Find at least one G-Man"), which it traced to Episode Two's internal test app.

What the 2024 update touched: his eyes

If you are wondering whether this list still applies to the current Steam build, there's no sign that anything changed. The update announcements on Half-Life 2's Steam page go back to 2013 and mention the G-Man twice, both times about his eyes in the opening sequence. A May 23, 2013 beta note fixed his left eye being off-centre. The November 15, 2024 anniversary update adjusted the introduction "to closely match the original sequence," including the specular highlights on his eyes. None of the announcements mentions a change to any of the twelve sightings.

The anniversary update's new developer commentary won't help you find him either. Combine OverWiki's transcript of its 282 nodes doesn't mention the G-Man once. Across the transcripts for Half-Life 2, Episode One and Episode Two, the one node about the sightings is the Episode Two node quoted above.

Quick Action Checklist

  • The opening monologue and the ending don't count. Both wikis list the same twelve sightings on PC.
  • Water Hazard has four. Look up at Station 7's walkway as the airboat comes in, watch the Breencast monitor on the same map, look up from the airboat on d1_canals_12, and check the "Observation" ledge on d1_canals_13 before you turn the gate wheel.
  • Cycle Kleiner's monitor in "A Red Letter Day" and the security monitors early in Nova Prospekt until he appears.
  • Use the Combine binoculars in the second house past the Shorepoint tunnel on Highway 17. Look the first time, because a second look shows them gone.
  • After Dog is carried off in Anticitizen One, follow the discordant music into the ruined tenement.
  • Don't hunt for the Black Mesa East face in-game. It's only in a texture's blue channel.
  • Expect nothing in Episode One. Valve suppressed the sightings on purpose.
  • In Episode Two, look for him on the bridge in Freeman Pontifex, at the White Forest Inn in Under the Radar, and on the screen in Our Mutual Fiend.
  • Use map followed by a map name in the console to check a single sighting without replaying a chapter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many times does the G-Man appear in Half-Life 2?
Apart from the opening monologue and the ending, both Combine OverWiki and the Half-Life Wiki list twelve G-Man sightings in the PC version of Half-Life 2. Six are on screens (Kleiner's monitor, Joe's boxcar TV, two Breencast displays, the Nova Prospekt security monitors and a TV in Anticitizen One), five are at a distance in the world, and one is a face hidden in a texture in Eli's lab. Water Hazard has the most, with four. The original Xbox port adds one more in Point Insertion but drops the Highway 17 binoculars sighting.
Where is the G-Man in Water Hazard?
Water Hazard has four G-Man sightings, the most of any Half-Life 2 chapter. On d1_canals_06 he stands on Station 7's walkway as your airboat approaches, then walks into the barn, and his image also flickers on a large Breencast monitor on the same map. On d1_canals_12 he looks down from a ledge as the airboat passes under. On d1_canals_13, the dam map before Black Mesa East, he stands on a concrete ledge near the gate controls, by a sign reading "Observation," and is gone once you turn the wheel to raise the gate.
Is the G-Man in Half-Life 2: Episode One?
Only in Episode One's opening scene, where Vortigaunts pull Gordon away from him. There are no hidden sightings in Episode One. Valve explained in the Episode Two developer commentary that it suppressed G-Man visitations completely in Episode One to show that he had lost track of Gordon.
Where can you see the G-Man in Half-Life 2: Episode Two?
Episode Two has three G-Man sightings after he speaks to Gordon during Alyx's healing in This Vortal Coil. In Freeman Pontifex (ep2_outland_06) he stands on a bridge before you go down to get the car. In Under the Radar (ep2_outland_10) he is at the White Forest Inn, where the car's way is blocked. In Our Mutual Fiend (ep2_outland_11b) he flickers on the screen that showed Mossman's recording, just before Alyx passes his message to Eli. A Valve commentary node in Episode Two tells players to keep an eye out for him.
Was there an achievement for finding the G-Man in Half-Life 2?
Not one that shipped. A cut Half-Life 2 achievement called Eagle Eye, "Find all of the G-Man's appearances in Half-Life 2," is known from strings in a leaked Postal III build, and Combine OverWiki lists a second cut achievement, Man of Mystery, "Find at least one G-Man," traced to Episode Two's internal test app. Neither appears in the released achievement lists.
Where is the hidden G-Man face in Black Mesa East?
In Eli Vance's lab in Half-Life 2's Black Mesa East chapter (map d1_eli_01), the G-Man's face is on the yellow end of one of the units the Vortigaunt is working on. It is stored only in the texture's blue channel, so you can't see it in normal play without editing a screenshot or extracting the texture. Valve concept artist Dhabih Eng revealed it in a July 2019 tweet saying no one had ever found it.
