Minecraft Goat Horns: All 8 Sounds and How to Get Them

Eight goat horns exist, and four of them only come from screaming goats. Here is exactly which blocks knock a horn loose, how to breed screaming goats, the pillager outpost chest that can hold a horn, and why blowing one in the Deep Dark is a bad idea.

Killing a goat does not get you a goat horn; you get a little experience and nothing else. The horn only comes loose when a goat rams something hard, which means the whole hobby is standing in front of an animal that wants to headbutt you and stepping aside at the right moment. This guide covers what makes a horn drop, how to get the four screaming-goat variants, the pillager outpost chest that also holds one, and what a horn does to everything within earshot. Facts below are checked against the Minecraft Wiki and Java Edition 26.3 data, the current release as of 2026-11-01.

Goat horns at a glance

There are eight variants. Four come from regular goats and four only from screaming goats. Each horn plays its own sound.

The names above match the game's own language file, and the split into a regular and a screaming tag is in the vanilla data. A horn is not stackable, and its rarity is Uncommon (it was Common until Java 1.21.2 and Bedrock 1.21.30).

How a goat gives up a horn

An adult goat that still has a horn loses one and drops it when it charges into a block from a short list: stone, coal ore, copper ore, iron ore, emerald ore, packed ice, and logs. On Java the list is the block tag snaps_goat_horn, and in the 26.3 data the log entry is the overworld natural logs tag, so nether stems are not on it. A data pack can change the list.

The rules that decide how many horns you get:

  • Adults only. Baby goats never drop horns, even though baby goats have horns again in Java 26.1 and Bedrock 26.10.
  • At most two per goat. Goats do not regrow horns. Once both are gone the goat is bald, and per Mojang's own Taking Inventory article its ram attacks just give it a headache.
  • Some goats spawn short. Per the wiki, an adult goat has a 10% chance to spawn missing one horn, so that goat is worth one drop, not two.
  • Both horns match. A given goat drops only one variant, so its second horn is a duplicate of its first.

Making a goat ram something

Per the wiki, a regular goat tries to ram a single unmoving target it can see within 4 to 16 blocks, once every 30 seconds to 5 minutes. A screaming goat tries every 5 to 15 seconds. The target can be a player, an armor stand, or almost any mob other than a ghast or another goat. The charge locks onto where the target is standing, so if the target steps aside, the goat runs on until it stops within a couple of blocks or hits something solid.

The practical setup follows from that. Stand still with a stone, ore or log face directly behind you, wait for the goat to lower its head, and sidestep. A connecting hit deals 1 to 3 damage depending on difficulty and 9 blocks of knockback, so do not do this next to a cliff. Holding wheat makes a goat that was winding up abandon the charge and walk to you, so keep it out of your hand while you farm.

Finding goats, and screaming goats

Goats spawn in groups of two to three on stone, gravel, packed ice or snow blocks in snowy slopes, jagged peaks and frozen peaks. Each natural spawn or baby bred from two regular goats has a 2% chance of producing a screaming goat. It looks identical to a regular goat; only the sounds and the faster ramming give it away.

Breeding is the way out of that 2%. These are the wiki's numbers for the baby's type:

ParentsChance of a screaming baby
Two regular goats2%
One regular, one screamingabout 50%
Two screaming goats100% on Java, 98% on Bedrock

So the plan is to find one screaming goat in the wild, breed it with wheat, and then breed screamers with each other. A screaming goat is also the better horn source because its 5-to-15-second ram interval is far shorter than a regular goat's 30 seconds to 5 minutes. The wiki does not say how a goat's horn variant is chosen, and I could not find a source for it, so treat variants as luck and expect to need more than four screaming goats to cover all four. Put a name tag on the goats you keep; the name tags guide explains what naming does and does not protect.

The other source: pillager outpost chests

Goats are not the only source. In the Java 26.3 data, the pillager outpost chest has a goat horn pool with 0 or 1 rolls (a uniform range, so about even odds of getting one) and the horn it gives is picked from the four regular horns only: Ponder, Sing, Seek or Feel. Bedrock's sample loot table does the same with a data value of 0 to 3, which is those same four.

That makes outposts a decent shortcut for the regular set if you are raiding them anyway, and no help at all for the screaming four. See the raids and pillagers guide for how to clear an outpost safely.

Blowing the horn: range and cooldown

Use the horn and the player raises it and plays the sound. The instrument data in Java gives a range of 256 blocks and a use duration of 7 seconds, and the wiki confirms a 7-second cooldown (140 ticks). Three details matter:

  • The cooldown is shared across variants. Switching to a different horn does not skip it.
  • The cooldown is per player. On a server, several players can blow in quick succession.
  • Range is capped by view distance. On a server the 256 blocks is limited by the server's view distance.

Mojang's article suggests using it to coordinate an ambush or warn teammates of an illager attack. The wiki also notes that the Seek horn is the same sound as the ominous horn that announces a raid, which makes it a bad choice as a team signal when raiders are about.

Do not blow it in the Deep Dark

A horn is not just a sound. Playing one fires the instrument_play game event, which is on the vanilla list of vibrations and on the list of events the Warden can listen to. The wiki's vibration table puts it at frequency 3, the same tier as shooting a projectile. Sculk sensors react to it, and a calibrated sculk sensor facing the right frequency can be wired to detect it. Wool blocks vibrations from traveling.

In practice: never blow a horn in an ancient city, and if you want a horn-triggered contraption, build it away from sculk you do not control. The Deep Dark and Warden guide covers what to do once the Warden has heard you.

Collecting all eight

  1. Get the regular four first. Walk a snowy slope or peak, find goats, and use the ram trick near stone or logs. Pillager outpost chests can fill gaps if you are already there.
  2. Look for a screaming goat. Listen for the different sounds; one in about fifty spawns, so you may need to scan several groups.
  3. Breed it. Feed wheat to the screamer and a second goat, then breed screamers together for near-certain screaming babies.
  4. Ram each screamer. Every screaming goat yields up to two horns of one variant. Keep rotating goats until the four screaming variants are in your chest.
  5. Want a side goal? The advancements list includes the goat boat advancement, and the taming and breeding guide covers wheat breeding basics.

Quick Action Checklist

  • Only adult goats drop horns, at most two, both the same variant.
  • Stone, coal, copper, iron, emerald ore, packed ice and logs are the blocks that make a goat lose a horn.
  • Screaming goats are 2% of natural goats; two screamers breed 100% screamers on Java and 98% on Bedrock.
  • Four horns are regular-only, four are screaming-only. Outpost chests give regular horns only.
  • 7-second cooldown shared across all horns, 256-block range.
  • No horns near sculk: the Warden can listen to the sound.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get a goat horn in Minecraft?
In Minecraft, you get a goat horn by making an adult goat ram into a stone, coal ore, copper ore, iron ore, emerald ore, packed ice or log block, which makes it drop one of its horns. Goats live on snowy slopes, jagged peaks and frozen peaks. You can also find one in a pillager outpost chest, where a horn appears about half the time.
How many goat horn sounds are there in Minecraft?
Minecraft has eight goat horn sounds: Ponder, Sing, Seek and Feel from regular goats, and Admire, Call, Yearn and Dream from screaming goats. Each plays a different sound, and all eight work the same way otherwise.
How do you get a screaming goat in Minecraft?
A natural or normal-bred goat in Minecraft has a 2% chance to be a screaming goat. Breeding a screaming goat with a regular goat gives about a 50% chance of a screaming baby, and breeding two screaming goats gives a screaming baby 100% of the time on Java Edition and 98% on Bedrock Edition.
What is the goat horn cooldown in Minecraft?
A Minecraft goat horn has a 7-second cooldown (140 ticks) after each use. The cooldown applies to every goat horn variant, so switching to a different horn does not bypass it, but it is tracked per player.
How many horns does a goat drop in Minecraft?
An adult Minecraft goat can drop up to two goat horns in its lifetime, because goats never regrow them, and one horn if it spawned missing one. Both horns from the same goat are always the same variant, and baby goats never drop horns.
Can a goat horn attract the Warden in Minecraft?
Yes. In Minecraft, playing a goat horn fires the instrument play vibration event, which the Warden can listen to and sculk sensors detect at frequency 3. Avoid blowing a horn in the Deep Dark or near sculk sensors unless you want the response.
