Half-Life 2 Voice Actors: Who Plays Every Character
The G-Man and Barney Calhoun sound nothing alike, so it never registers that they are the same actor. That is the kind of fact a chapter walkthrough has no room for. Here is the full Half-Life 2 cast, character by character: who voices who, the casting stories worth knowing, and the one recasting the trilogy made without ever announcing it.

The G-Man and Barney Calhoun do not sound alike. One talks in the slow, over-stressed cadence of a man choosing every syllable on purpose; the other talks like a beat cop who has seen worse than headcrabs and is mostly just tired. Nothing about either performance suggests they came out of the same throat. They did — Michael Shapiro voices both — and no chapter walkthrough has any reason to mention it, because it does not change how you play Route Kanal or Nova Prospekt.
This is the cast list this vertical has never run: who voices who in Half-Life 2, the casting stories behind the ones worth knowing, and the recasting the trilogy made without ever announcing it. It is not the same ground as the developer commentary guide — that page is about the 44 Valve staff, like writer Marc Laidlaw and animator Ken Birdwell, who recorded commentary tracks about how the game was built. This is the separate cast of actors who performed the characters those staff wrote.
The full Half-Life 2 voice cast, in one table
No human character below was ever recast — the same actor voices each one in every trilogy game they appear in. The one cast change inside the trilogy itself belongs to a non-human race, the Vortigaunts, covered in its own section below.

Michael Shapiro voices both Barney Calhoun and the G-Man
Credited in-game as Mike Shapiro, Michael David Shapiro was born December 29, 1965, in Springfield, Massachusetts. He is a working stage actor and theater director outside his voice work, and inside Half-Life he has played the friendliest recurring face in the series and its most unreadable one, in the same two games, without either performance tipping you off to the other.

Barney is City 17's undercover Resistance mole, played loose and conversational — he is the one handing you weapons and cracking wise at Black Mesa East. The G-Man is Half-Life's recurring handler, played with the deliberately wrong-footed stresses the story and lore guide covers from the writing side. Shapiro carried the G-Man into Half-Life: Alyx in 2020, thirteen years after Episode Two — Barney doesn't appear in that game, so only one of the two roles made the jump.
Merle Dandridge beat a hundred other actors for Alyx
Merle Dandridge was born in Okinawa, Japan, and grew up moving through U.S. Air Force and Strategic Air Command bases before settling in Nebraska. According to Valve's Bill Van Buren, she was chosen from the final five out of more than a hundred actors who auditioned for Alyx, with the team looking for someone who could sound "beautiful," "charming," and "warmly intimate," then shift into "a strong, confident, and believable action character" without the tone breaking.
Dandridge voiced Alyx through all three games in the trilogy, and by her own account in an interview with Valve News Network, one of the character's most quoted lines was not scripted: "Don't leave me," Alyx's last line in Episode Two, slipped out during recording and made it into the final game. She was originally cast to reprise the role for Half-Life: Alyx in 2020 and recorded most of that game's dialogue before Valve replaced her with Ozioma Akagha late in development — a separate, later Half-Life title, not a Half-Life 2 recasting, but the reason Alyx has had two different voices across the wider series.
Robert Culp turned Wallace Breen into a real performance
Robert Culp was an established television actor before Half-Life 2, best known for playing secret agent Kelly Robinson opposite Bill Cosby on I Spy from 1965 to 1968. Valve cast him as Wallace Breen, and the story and lore guide covers why the writing lets Breen make his case for collaboration out loud instead of playing him as a cartoon villain — Culp's delivery is a large part of why that scene lands.

Culp died of a heart attack outside his Los Angeles home on March 24, 2010, at age 79. Breen never got new recording sessions for Episode One — the game reuses Culp's original Half-Life 2 lines for the broadcasts that continue there. That is also part of why the Citadel finale guide treats Breen's fate as unresolved rather than settled: Valve never brought Culp back to record a definitive answer, on top of never showing one on screen.
Robert Guillaume and Michelle Forbes played Eli and Mossman
Robert Guillaume voiced Dr. Eli Vance across all three games. He won two Emmy Awards for Soap in 1979 and Benson in 1985 — becoming the first Black actor to win the Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series — and later voiced Rafiki in Disney's The Lion King. Guillaume died October 24, 2017, at age 89.
Michelle Forbes voiced Dr. Judith Mossman, also across all three games. She is best known on television for playing Ensign Ro Laren on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Admiral Helena Cain on the rebooted Battlestar Galactica, with additional roles on 24, Homicide: Life on the Street, and Prison Break.
The Vortigaunts changed actors between Episode One and Two
The Vortigaunts' voice change is the only recasting inside the trilogy itself — not a separate-game swap like Alyx's between Half-Life 2 and Half-Life: Alyx, but an actor change between two entries of the same three-game arc. Louis Gossett Jr. voiced them in Half-Life 2 and Episode One. Gossett won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for An Officer and a Gentleman and starred in the Iron Eagle film series; he died March 29, 2024, at age 87.

Tony Todd took over the role starting with Episode Two and kept it for Half-Life: Alyx in 2020. Todd was best known for playing the title role in the Candyman films, alongside parts in the Final Destination series and 24. He died November 6, 2024, at age 69 — meaning both actors who ever voiced a Vortigaunt in this trilogy died within the same eight months of each other.
Father Grigori and the Fisherman share a voice actor
Jim French voiced Father Grigori, the shotgun-wielding priest who runs the Ravenholm chapter, and the same actor plays the unnamed Fisherman who opens Lost Coast — a detail that goes unremarked in-game since the two characters never share a scene. French was primarily a radio personality and producer, credited with writing and producing more than 627 radio shows by 2008, including The Adventures of Harry Nile. He also voiced Bill in Left 4 Dead. French died in December 2017, at age 89.
Gordon Freeman has no voice actor, and that's on purpose
Half-Life 2 never casts anyone as Gordon Freeman, because Gordon never speaks. The Half-Life Wiki lists his voice actor field as not applicable and describes the silence as intentional across the entire saga — the design choice that keeps Gordon from registering as a separate character independent of the player controlling him. He is built to be occupied, not watched — the same principle the beginner's guide covers from the mechanics side, in how little Half-Life 2 explains before dropping you into it.
One wrinkle worth knowing if you have heard Gordon called mute outright: the Half-Life PlayStation 2 manual's copy of his Black Mesa acceptance letter references a "recent telephone conversation" between Freeman and Black Mesa staff, which the Half-Life Wiki notes as evidence he can presumably speak, even though the games never let him. Silent is the accurate word. Mute is not, strictly.
Five of these actors have died since Half-Life 2 shipped
Half-Life 2 is old enough now that its cast reflects it. Five of the actors covered in this guide have died: Robert Culp (Wallace Breen) in 2010, Robert Guillaume (Eli Vance) in 2017, Jim French (Father Grigori and the Fisherman) in December 2017, Louis Gossett Jr. (the original Vortigaunt) in March 2024, and Tony Todd (the Vortigaunt from Episode Two onward) in November 2024. Michael Shapiro, Merle Dandridge, Michelle Forbes, and Harry S. Robins are not listed as deceased on the Half-Life Wiki as of this writing.
Quick Action Checklist
- Barney Calhoun and the G-Man are both voiced by Michael Shapiro — the same actor, two characters that never sound alike.
- Merle Dandridge won the role of Alyx Vance from a field of over a hundred auditioning actors and voiced her through all three games in the trilogy.
- Wallace Breen is Robert Culp; his Episode One broadcasts reuse Culp's original Half-Life 2 recordings rather than new sessions.
- The Vortigaunts recast mid-trilogy: Louis Gossett Jr. through Episode One, Tony Todd from Episode Two onward.
- Father Grigori and Lost Coast's Fisherman share a voice actor, Jim French, even though the two characters never appear together.
- Gordon Freeman has no voice actor and does not speak in any Half-Life game — treat "mute" as close but not exact; "silent" is the precise word.
- Five cast members covered here have died: Culp, Guillaume, French, Gossett Jr., and Todd.
