Half-Life 2 on Console, Mac and Steam Deck: Every Version
Half-Life 2 has shipped on seven platforms and one arcade cabinet, and only one of those versions still gets patches from Valve. Here is every official port, what each one is missing, and the right way to play it on whatever you own.

Half-Life 2 has been sold on seven platforms and rebuilt once as a Japanese arcade cabinet. As of September 30, 2026, the version Valve still patches is the Steam one, and it isn't on a console.
That gap got wider in November 2024. The 20th Anniversary Update put Episode One, Episode Two, Lost Coast, 3.5 hours of developer commentary and Steam Workshop support inside the Steam release. None of it reached the consoles, where the newest release dates from 2007. So "can I play Half-Life 2 on this?" is really two questions: does a version exist, and what is it missing?
This vertical's beginner's guide assumes you are on Steam. This page is for everyone else, and for anyone deciding which copy to buy.
The short answer, platform by platform
Combine OverWiki and the Half-Life Wiki give the same platform list for Half-Life 2: Windows, Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, macOS, Linux and Nvidia's Shield. Taito's arcade spin-off sits alongside it. Here is where each one stands.
| Platform | What you get | First released | Status on September 30, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows (Steam) | Half-Life 2 with both Episodes, Lost Coast, commentary and Workshop | November 16, 2004 | Current. $9.99 on the US Steam store |
| Linux and Steam Deck (Steam) | The same Steam build | Linux support added June 26, 2013 | Current. Steam Deck Verified |
| macOS (Steam) | Native Mac build | May 26, 2010 | Removed June 12, 2024 |
| Xbox | Port published by EA | November 15, 2005 | Superseded by The Orange Box |
| Xbox 360, playable on Xbox One and Series X and S | The Orange Box | October 10, 2007 | Playable through backward compatibility |
| PlayStation 3 | The Orange Box, ported by EA | December 11, 2007 in North America | PS3 only |
| Android | Nvidia's port | May 12, 2014 | Shield devices only at launch |
| Japanese arcades | Half-Life 2: Survivor, by Taito | June 28, 2006 | Online service shut down February 1, 2010 |
PS4, PS5 and Nintendo's consoles are not on either wiki's list. There is no official Half-Life 2 for any of them.
Steam is the version Valve still patches
Valve's Half-Life 2 announcement feed on Steam shows the anniversary patch on November 15, 2024, fixes on November 16, 18 and 26, a Linux launch-crash fix on February 11, 2025, and a July 23, 2025 update, the most recent as of this writing.
For $9.99, the Steam version is the complete set:
- Episode One and Episode Two are on the main menu, and Valve's notes say you move on to the next one automatically when you finish. The episodes guide covers both.
- Lost Coast is in the Extras menu. The Lost Coast guide has the details.
- Developer commentary switches on from the New Game screen, per Valve's change notes. The commentary guide maps all of it.
- Half-Life 2: Deathmatch is added to your library with the purchase, according to the store page. See the Deathmatch guide.
- Steam Workshop campaigns and replacement content load from inside the game.
One buying note. Steam still sells The Orange Box for $19.99, and Steam's own package data prices its contents at $19.98 bought separately. Half-Life 2 now carries the Episodes, Lost Coast and Deathmatch, Portal costs $9.99, and Team Fortress 2 is free. The bundle is Half-Life 2 plus Portal for one extra cent.
Linux uses the same purchase. Valve's June 26, 2013 update note reads "Added support for Linux operating systems," after a Linux beta that Engadget covered in May 2013. Steam's store data for Half-Life 2 still lists Windows and Linux, and the Linux build has kept getting fixes: Thai font rendering in November 2024 and a launch crash in February 2025.
If a mod breaks on the current build, Valve archived the pre-anniversary game as a public beta branch called steam_legacy, labelled "Pre-20th Anniversary Build." Pick it from the Betas tab in the game's Steam properties.
Steam Deck: Verified, with a menu built for it
Steam's compatibility data rates Half-Life 2 Verified on Steam Deck. It passes the four checks Valve lists: the default controller configuration fully works, the on-screen button glyphs match the Deck, interface text is legible, and the default settings perform well.
That rating was engineered, not inherited. A February 18, 2022 update added "UI and Input support for Steam Deck verification," and a February 24 follow-up fixed external controllers on the Deck and added chapter icons for the Deck's interface.
The anniversary update then brought that work to other devices:
- Launching from Steam Big Picture mode now uses the gamepad interface that was previously on Steam Deck. The
-gamepaduilaunch option does the same anywhere. - A new Gamepad settings menu arrived, along with separate aim-assist modes for mouse and gamepad.
- The new Enhanced aim-assist mode tries to track enemies and snap to them while you are driving. Switch it on before the airboat, not during it. The vehicle chapters guide covers the fights where you will want it.
- A November 26, 2024 patch added a stick-sensitivity slider.
Saves follow you, too. Steam lists Steam Cloud support for Half-Life 2, so a campaign you start on a desktop picks up on the Deck.
Mac: native for 14 years, then removed
Half-Life 2 reached the Mac on May 26, 2010, together with both Episodes. Valve's announcement made them SteamPlay titles: if you owned the games on PC, you already had them on Mac, and Steam Cloud moved saves between the two.
Valve kept that build alive for a long time. A September 2013 update improved threaded performance on Linux and Mac OS X, and a February 28, 2022 patch fixed corrupted models on OS X.
Then, on June 12, 2024, a Valve patch removed macOS support from a batch of its Source games, Half-Life 2 included, according to SteamDB data reported by iMore the following day. Steam's store data for Half-Life 2 now lists Windows and Linux only. The anniversary update landed five months after that, so no native Mac build has ever carried it.
iMore pointed Mac owners at Apple's Game Porting Toolkit as a way to run the Windows version. That is a workaround Valve does not support. The two streaming routes further down are the cleaner answer.
Xbox: The Orange Box still runs on Series X
The first console Half-Life 2 was a port for the original Xbox, published by EA on November 15, 2005. Combine OverWiki sums up its reception: positive, but critics cited the missing multiplayer and frame-rate problems, and it scored lower than the PC version.
The Xbox version worth your time is The Orange Box, released on Xbox 360 on October 10, 2007, the same day as the PC edition. One disc held five games: Half-Life 2, Episode One, Episode Two, Portal and Team Fortress 2. It also carried 99 achievements, which Combine OverWiki counts as the most of any Xbox 360 game. The achievements guide covers how Half-Life 2's share of them worked.

Microsoft added The Orange Box to Xbox One backward compatibility in October 2016. On October 18, 2018, it became one of four Valve games enhanced for Xbox One X, and Xbox Wire said those enhanced Xbox 360 games run at "9X the original pixel count." Microsoft's store page today lists The Orange Box for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, tagged 4K Ultra HD and Xbox One X Enhanced.
On an Xbox One X or Series X, then, you get the whole trilogy at a higher resolution than the 360 ran it. On any current Xbox, you don't get anything Valve added later:
- No Half-Life 2 commentary. Every Orange Box game except Half-Life 2 shipped with commentary. The base game only got its track in Valve's November 2024 update, on PC.
- No Lost Coast. It was a download for PC Orange Box owners, and it isn't one of the five games on the disc.
- No Workshop and none of the 2024 fixes.
Cheats on the console versions run on button codes rather than typed commands. The console commands guide lists the Xbox 360 and PS3 codes.
PlayStation: one port, and EA built it
Sony owners got one Half-Life 2: The Orange Box on PS3, released November 23, 2007 in Europe and December 11, 2007 in North America. Valve built the PC and Xbox 360 versions in-house and outsourced the PS3 port to EA. Before launch, Gabe Newell told Edge magazine it was "harder to get it to the same standard" as the other two.
He was right. Combine OverWiki records that 1UP's preview of a late beta found frame-rate problems throughout, and that the PS3 version's review scores suffered for it. A patch reached North America on March 19, 2008, but its notes did not mention the frame rate.

That is the whole PlayStation story. With no PS4 or PS5 version, the PS3 Orange Box is the only official way to play Half-Life 2 on Sony hardware.
Android: the Nvidia Shield exclusive
On May 12, 2014, Half-Life 2 and Portal arrived on Google Play at $10 each, available only on Nvidia's Shield devices. Nvidia did the port with what TechCrunch described as Valve's "guidance and blessing," and Engadget reported that both games downloaded to the device and ran locally rather than streaming from a PC. Episode One followed on December 15, 2014, for the Shield Tablet at $7.99, and it required a controller.
The port kept Half-Life 2's achievements, minus one. Combine OverWiki notes the Shield version has every PC achievement except Lambda Locator, the 45-cache hunt. On a phone that isn't a Shield, you need to stream.
Streaming: the answer for phones and Macs
There are two supported ways to play the Steam version on hardware that can't run it:
- Steam Remote Play. Steam's store page tags Half-Life 2 for Remote Play on Phone and Remote Play on Tablet. The game runs on your own PC and streams to the device.
- GeForce NOW. NVIDIA's public game list shows Half-Life 2, Steam app 220, as available. NVIDIA offers GeForce NOW apps for Mac, iOS and iPadOS, Android, Chromebook and web browsers, and the service streams the copy you own on Steam from NVIDIA's servers.
Both give you the current Steam build, commentary and Episodes included. No console version can say that.
Half-Life 2: Survivor, the Japan-only arcade version
The strangest official Half-Life 2 only came out in Japan. Taito's Half-Life 2: Survivor reached arcades on June 28, 2006, running on Taito's Type X+ hardware with a 32-inch widescreen LCD at 1360x768.

It was built around the cabinet. You moved and aimed with two joysticks, and you jumped and crouched with two foot pedals. Combine OverWiki notes that the simplified controls cost the game its flashlight, suit zoom and manual reloading. It shipped three modes:
| Mode | What it was |
|---|---|
| Story | The Half-Life 2 campaign cut down to its combat sections |
| Battle | Four-on-four team deathmatch, red team against blue, with Combine and Resistance characters allowed on either side |
| Mission | Up to four players against timed objectives, such as collecting gems dropped by antlions |
Taito also pulled from Valve's cutting-room floor. Survivor has a Sniper Rifle based on the one cut from Half-Life 2, and its female Combine sniper model is based on the cut Combine Assassin. The cut content guide covers what else Valve dropped.

Player data lived on NESYS smart cards. The network service behind them shut down on February 1, 2010. Combine OverWiki says that ended online play: Story and Mission modes stayed playable on the cabinets, but scores stopped saving, and Battle mode was cut back to its offline Single and Tutorial options.
Two things that are not new versions
The browser port. On June 24, 2026, a developer going by slqnt, working with 98006, released an unofficial port of Half-Life 2 that runs in a web browser, according to Gigazine. It is not from Valve, and Gigazine points out that Valve holds the copyright, so it may be taken down.
Half-Life 2 RTX and the VR Mod. Both are free mods that attach to the Steam version, and Steam lists each as Windows-only. Neither adds a platform. The RTX guide and the VR Mod guide cover them.
Which version to play
- Anything that runs Steam: the Steam version. It has the commentary, the Workshop and both Episodes built in, and it is the version Valve is still fixing.
- Steam Deck: the same version, Verified. Turn on Enhanced aim assist before the vehicle chapters.
- Xbox One or Series X|S and no PC: The Orange Box is a perfectly good way to play the trilogy, at a higher resolution on a One X or Series X. You give up Lost Coast and the Half-Life 2 commentary.
- Mac or phone: stream the Steam copy through Remote Play or GeForce NOW.
- PS3 only: it works, but it is the port the frame-rate complaints were about. Take any other option you have.
Quick Action Checklist
- Buy Half-Life 2 on Steam for $9.99, not The Orange Box for $19.99. The bundle only adds Portal, and Steam prices that at one cent more than buying the two separately.
- One Steam purchase covers Windows, Linux and Steam Deck. Half-Life 2 is Deck Verified.
- On a gamepad, open the Gamepad settings menu and try the Enhanced aim-assist mode before the vehicle chapters.
- Use the
steam_legacybeta branch only if an older mod breaks on the current build. - On a Mac, don't look for a native build. It was removed on June 12, 2024. Stream the Steam version instead.
- On Xbox One or Series X|S, The Orange Box runs through backward compatibility and is Xbox One X Enhanced. It has no Lost Coast and no Half-Life 2 commentary.
- On PlayStation, the 2007 PS3 Orange Box is the only official version. There is none for PS4, PS5 or any Nintendo console.
- On a phone, use Steam Remote Play or GeForce NOW. The 2014 Android port was sold for Nvidia Shield devices.
