Minecraft Music Discs: Every Disc and How to Get It

Twelve of the 22 music discs come from a creeper killed by a skeleton or one of its variants. The other ten come from ten different places, and eight of those are a structure. Here is every disc, its composer, its length, its odds, and the comparator value it puts out — including the seven signal levels that two different discs now share.

A Minecraft jukebox placed on moss at the mouth of a lush cave, with glow berry vines and a spore blossom hanging from the ceiling above a dark drop.

There are 22 music discs in Minecraft. The creeper-killed-by-a-skeleton trick gets you exactly twelve of them — the entire C418 set, and nothing else.

The other ten come from ten different places, and eight of those places are a structure you have to go and find. One is a crafting recipe. Two are guaranteed drops off a mob if you kill it in a very particular way. And the newest one, added in 26.2, sits in a chest minecart at a 42.1% roll — the friendliest disc odds in the game by a distance.

Here is the whole set: composer, track length, source, published odds, and the comparator value each disc puts out, which is where the collection stops being decoration and starts being redstone.

A Minecraft jukebox in a wooden house on Bedrock Edition, with nine different music discs filling the player's hotbar below it.

Twelve discs share one source; the other ten do not

The twelve original C418 discs — 13, cat, blocks, chirp, far, mall, mellohi, stal, strad, ward, 11 and wait — all drop from the same event, which makes them the only twelve a single build can farm. Everything Lena Raine, Samuel Åberg, Aaron Cherof, Amos Roddy, Hyper Potions and fingerspit wrote comes from a specific place or a specific kill instead.

Renewable is a slightly different list, and worth separating out. The wiki's renewability field marks the twelve C418 discs plus Tears and Lava Chicken as renewable, because ghasts and chicken jockeys keep spawning; Precipice and Creator are listed non-renewable except via vault; Pigstep, otherside, 5, Relic, Creator (Music Box) and Bounce are non-renewable outright.

That is the whole shape of disc collecting. Twelve discs come off one farm. The other ten you go and fetch, two of them from a mob and eight from a structure.

Two length notes worth having if you are building anything timed: blocks is the longest track at 5:45, and 11 is the shortest at 1:11, with Creator (Music Box) two seconds behind it. A hopper loop built around one disc and then swapped to another will not keep its timing.

The creeper trick, precisely

A creeper drops a random disc from the twelve-disc C418 pool when it is killed by a skeleton, wither skeleton, skeleton horse, stray, bogged or parched. Six killers on paper; fewer than that in practice.

  • Wither skeletons do not use bows. The Minecraft Wiki states they therefore cannot attack a creeper without commands, and cannot cause the drop directly.
  • Skeleton horses are listed as a commands-only case for the same reason — the wiki tags them "(via commands)" in the killer list.
  • That leaves skeleton, stray, bogged and parched as the four you will actually meet.

There is also a genuinely odd one documented as working-as-intended: TNT lit by a flaming arrow credits every kill in the blast to whoever fired the arrow. If a skeleton ignites TNT with a Flame bow, or by shooting an arrow through fire or lava, every creeper caught in that explosion drops a disc. Two bug reports, MC-210303 and MCPE-150884, were both resolved as intended behaviour.

Read the page carefully and that TNT note quietly reopens the wither skeleton case: the wiki lists "being a wither skeleton" as one of the qualifying ignition routes, marked Java-only. So the flat statement that a wither skeleton can never earn you a disc is the wiki's own direct-attack rule, not the whole picture — the indirect TNT path is documented on the same page.

One practical detail for anyone building a disc farm above ground: parched do not burn in sunlight. Skeletons, strays and bogged all carry the burn_in_daylight entity tag; parched, the desert skeleton variant added in 1.21.11, does not. They also spawn in place of 50% of desert skeleton spawns on Java, and since the wiki lists deserts as the only biome parched spawn in, a desert is where an above-ground farm still has a live archer through a clear day instead of losing it at dawn.

The two guaranteed mob drops

Two discs ignore probability entirely, and both are gated on how you land the kill rather than on luck.

Tears drops from a ghast killed by its own fireball after you deflect it back. Hit the fireball, let it return, and the disc is guaranteed. Kill the ghast any other way and you get its usual drops but no disc.

Lava Chicken drops from a chicken jockey — but only if you kill the rider before the chicken. Kill the chicken first and the jockey is no longer a jockey, and the disc does not drop.

The structure discs, by what they cost you

Every published structure odd in one place. These are per-chest (or per-brush) rolls, not per-structure:

StructureContainerDiscChance
Mineshaft in a sulfur caveChest minecartBounce42.1%
Ancient cityChest5 (as disc fragment)29.8%

Trial chambersVaults and reward chestsPrecipice3.6%
Dungeon (monster room)Chestotherside3.1%
StrongholdAltar chestotherside2.5%
Trial chambersDecorated potCreator (Music Box)1.4%

Three things fall out of that table.

Pigstep has already been made easier once. Java 1.16.2 raised its bastion chest chance from 3.3% to 5.6%, and a bastion remnant carries several general chests, so a full sweep is the play rather than a single opportunistic loot.

otherside has three sources and all three are bad. 8.4% in an ancient city, 3.1% in a dungeon, 2.5% in a stronghold altar chest. If you are hunting one specifically, the deep dark is where to spend the trip, and you can pick up disc fragments in the same chests.

The trial chamber figure needs a footnote. The Music Disc page reports Precipice at 3.6% across trial chamber vaults and reward chests together. The per-container breakdown — where a normal vault rolls it at 4.2% — is in the ominous vault loot table, which also puts Creator at the same 7.5% slot weight as the heavy core.

Disc 5 is the only one you can craft

Disc "5" never generates as a disc. It generates as disc fragments in ancient city chests at 29.8%, and nine fragments combined in a crafting table make the disc.

Nine Minecraft disc fragments displayed in a 3-by-3 grid of item frames on deepslate bricks inside an ancient city, with music disc 5 framed beside a jukebox.

That makes an ancient city trip unusually efficient for a collector: the same chests roll 13, cat, otherside and the fragments, and the fragments stack to 64 so a partial haul is never wasted. Fragments were reclassified from Common to Uncommon rarity in 1.21.2 on Java and 1.21.30 on Bedrock — a tooltip change, not an odds change.

Bounce: the newest disc, and the easiest chest roll in the game

Bounce, by fingerspit, arrived with Java Edition 26.2 "Chaos Cubed" on 16 June 2026 and Bedrock 26.30 the same day. It generates in chest minecarts inside mineshafts that spawn in sulfur caves — a 42.1% roll, the highest published chance in the structure table above.

Two Minecraft jukeboxes on a sulfur-block stage in a sulfur cave, with three framed music discs, pale sulfur cubes on the floor and two players in front of them.

The catch is entirely in finding the biome, not in the loot roll. Sulfur caves are the hard-to-locate part; once you are in one and you hit mineshaft rails, the disc is close to a coin flip per chest minecart.

Worth stating plainly: 26.3 is still snapshot-only. Snapshot 10 landed on 25 August 2026 and adds no music disc, no jukebox change and no jukebox song definition change. Bounce is the current end of the list on both editions.

The comparator table: 22 discs, 15 signals

A comparator reading a jukebox outputs a value fixed to the disc inside it, and it keeps outputting that value after the track finishes — the signal tracks the disc being stored, not the music playing. That makes a jukebox a genuinely usable 4-bit item detector.

Except the game ran out of numbers. There are 22 discs and only 15 non-zero signal strengths, so seven of the fifteen levels are now shared by two discs each:

SignalDisc(s)
0(empty)
113
2cat
3blocks
4chirp
5far
6mall
7mellohi
8stal, Bounce
9strad, Lava Chicken
10ward, Tears
1111, Creator (Music Box)
12wait, Creator
13Pigstep, Precipice
14otherside, Relic
155

Eight discs still have a signal to themselves — 13, cat, blocks, chirp, far, mall, mellohi and 5. The other fourteen are paired. If you are building a jukebox-based selector, those eight are the only ones a comparator can identify unambiguously.

The pattern in the table is worth reading off directly. The original twelve took 1 through 12 in order; Pigstep, otherside and 5 filled 13, 14 and 15; and every disc added after that had to reuse a level, assigned downward from 14 — Relic 14, Precipice 13, Creator 12, Creator (Music Box) 11, Tears 10, Lava Chicken 9, Bounce 8. That is why every collision in the table sits at 8 or above.

Jukebox mechanics worth knowing

The block itself costs eight planks and a diamond, which is a lot for a decoration and the reason the wiki's note that jukeboxes work as furnace fuel is funnier than it should be.

A Minecraft jukebox on crimson nylium in a crimson forest, with two green note particles rising from it against the red canopy.

  • Audio carries 64 blocks. Note particles come out the top while a track plays.
  • A playing jukebox emits redstone strength 15 on its own, no comparator needed, and redirects adjacent redstone dust to point at itself.
  • That signal locks any adjacent hopper. A hopper under a jukebox cannot pull the disc while the music plays — but when the track ends the hopper unlocks and ejects it automatically. That is the whole basis of a playlist machine.
  • A hopper minecart ignores the lock. It is not affected by the jukebox's redstone impulse, so it can pull a disc out mid-track. Pair it with droppers and hoppers to re-insert and you have a loop.
  • Powering the hopper from anything else stops the eject, which is how you pause a playlist at the end of the current disc instead of mid-track.
  • Hoppers, droppers and crafters can all insert a disc. The crafter case is specific: a crafter assembling disc fragments into "5" can feed the finished disc straight in.
  • Tamed parrots and allays dance within 3 blocks of a playing jukebox — and a dancing allay fed an amethyst shard splits in two, which is the allay duplication loop.

Two things that used to be true

Wikis and old guides both lag on removals, and this item has two.

Bedrock buried treasure no longer contains discs. From Bedrock 1.4.0, mellohi and wait were a Bedrock-exclusive buried treasure drop. Bedrock 1.21.130 removed them from that table. Any guide still promising a disc from a treasure map predates that change.

Relic's comparator value changed on Bedrock. It output 15 on Bedrock until 26.1, which set it to 14 to match Java. Before that update, Relic and "5" both read 15 on Bedrock; now Relic shares 14 with otherside instead. A Bedrock selector built on the old value is reading the wrong disc.

Twelve from creepers, nine fragments from an ancient city, one deflected fireball, one chicken jockey, and the rest from structure loot. That is all 22 — and since discs stack to one apiece, the complete set is 22 slots, which fits in a single 27-slot shulker box with five to spare.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are 22 music discs in Minecraft as of Java Edition 26.2 and Bedrock Edition 26.30. Twelve were composed by C418 (13, cat, blocks, chirp, far, mall, mellohi, stal, strad, ward, 11 and wait), four by Lena Raine (Pigstep, otherside, Creator and Creator (Music Box)), two by Aaron Cherof (Relic and Precipice), and one each by Samuel Åberg (5), Amos Roddy (Tears), Hyper Potions (Lava Chicken) and fingerspit (Bounce). The most recent addition is Bounce, which arrived with the Chaos Cubed update on 16 June 2026.
