How to Make a Saddle in Minecraft: Recipe and Loot Odds

Saddles have been craftable since June 2025: three leather and one iron ingot. Here is the recipe and what it really costs, every chest, trade and mob drop that still gives one with Java and Bedrock odds, the five chests that stopped, all eleven mobs it fits, and how shears take it back.

A Minecraft player in a pink shirt standing by a crafting table outside a wooden stable, with pieces of leather and an iron ingot floating beside their hand, a saddled brown horse in front of the stable, more horses in the stalls and red badlands hills behind.

For fifteen years a saddle was something you found, fished up or bought. Saddles arrived in Infdev in June 2010 with no recipe, and they stayed that way until June 17, 2025, when the Chase the Skies drop (Java Edition 1.21.6, Bedrock Edition 1.21.90) gave them one: three leather and one iron ingot.

The same update also rewrote where the old ones come from. Five chest loot tables lost their saddle and got 1 to 5 leather instead, and shears became a way to take a saddle back off a mob. A guide that tells you saddles cannot be crafted, or sends you to dungeons and desert temples to find one, describes a version of the game that no longer exists.

The odds below are worked out from the game's own data files for Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50, the Wilderness Bound releases of September 15, 2026, and checked against Mojang's changelogs and the Minecraft Wiki. Bedrock's two hotfixes since, 26.51 and 26.52, list no saddle, loot or trade changes in the wiki's patch notes. The Java 26.4 snapshots so far, up to Snapshot 4 on October 13, touch saddles only with a sound bug fix.

The saddle recipe

The Minecraft Java Edition crafting table screen with one leather in the top-middle slot and leather, an iron ingot and leather across the middle row, producing a saddle in the output slot, over a grassy savanna at dusk.

The recipe is shaped. Put one leather in the middle of a row, then leather, iron ingot, leather across the row beneath it. It is three slots wide, so it does not fit the 2×2 grid in your inventory; you need a crafting table. The two rows can sit at the top or the bottom of the 3×3 grid, and Mojang's own screenshots show both. One craft makes one saddle.

On both editions the recipe pops up the first time you pick up leather, per Mojang's changelogs.

What a saddle really costs

The iron ingot is the cheap part. The leather is where the work is:

  • Cows. A cow drops 0 to 2 leather, one on average without Looting, so a saddle is about three cows. Mooshrooms, horses, donkeys, mules, llamas, trader llamas and hoglins drop leather too.
  • Rabbit hide. Four hide craft one leather, so twelve hide make a saddle's worth.
  • Old saddle chests. The five chests in the section further down now roll 1 to 5 leather where the saddle used to be, three on average: exactly one saddle's worth.

For scale, the novice leatherworker's leather trade pays 1 emerald for 6 leather, so the leather in a saddle is worth half an emerald at that trade, while a master leatherworker sells the finished saddle for 6. If you have cows, craft it.

Every other way to get a saddle

Crafting is the default, but the old sources still work. These tables cover every loot table in the Java 26.3 data that contains a saddle, with Bedrock 26.50's figures beside them.

Chest odds, best to worst

The chance a single chest holds at least one saddle:

StructureContainerJava 26.3Bedrock 26.50
Nether fortressChest33.3%33.3%
Abandoned campCommon chest27.5%27.5%, 1 or 2 per saddle roll
VillageTannery chest17.3%17.3%
VillageWeaponsmith chest14.4%14.4%
End cityChest12.7%12.7%
Bastion remnantHoglin stable chest12.0%13.6%
VillageSavanna house chest11.3%11.3%

A Nether fortress chest gives the best odds of any chest, and you are going there for blaze rods and nether wart anyway; our fortress and bastion guide covers the route. In the Overworld, the best chest is the common chest in an abandoned camp, added with Wilderness Bound on September 15, 2026; on Bedrock each saddle that chest rolls comes as one or two. A village tannery is the leatherworker's house, so a village with one gives you a 17.3% chest and, eventually, a villager who sells the thing outright.

Fishing, trading and mob drops

SourceOdds or price
Fishing, as a treasure catch0.83% per catch on Java, 1.18% / 1.53% / 1.89% with Luck of the Sea I / II / III; 0.81% on Bedrock
Master leatherworker6 emeralds, 12 uses before a restock; every master on Java, half of them on Bedrock
Ravager1 saddle on every death on Java; on Bedrock only when a player kills it
Saddled strider spawnJava: 1 in 30 adult striders, ridden by a zombified piglin. Bedrock: 2 in every 100 strider spawns, riderless because of an open bug
Any saddled mobDrops its saddle when it dies

Four notes on that table:

  • Fishing only rolls treasure in open water on Java, which our fishing guide explains. The saddle is one of six equally weighted treasure items there. Bedrock has no open-water rule and weights its treasure differently, which is why its figure is a hair lower.
  • The leatherworker sells it at master level, the fifth and last. On Java, a master leatherworker offers two trades drawn from a pool of exactly two, so every master has the saddle. On Bedrock the master tier picks one of two, a dyed leather helmet or the saddle. The workstation is a cauldron; our villager jobs guide covers assigning one.
  • The ravager drops its saddle regardless of Looting. That saddle on its back is only part of its texture: you cannot saddle a ravager, and Mojang's notes say shears cannot take a saddle off one. You meet ravagers in raids.
  • Saddled striders spawn on both editions, but the full strider jockey is Java-only for now. Mojang's bug tracker has an open report, MCPE-236161, that the zombified piglin rider no longer spawns on Bedrock; per the report, the strider still arrives wearing its saddle. Bedrock's strider file rolls that saddled spawn for 2 in every 100 striders.

Five chests that stopped giving saddles

Mojang's 1.21.6 changelog removed saddles from these five loot tables and put 1 to 5 leather in their place, and Bedrock 1.21.90 made the same change. The leather took over the saddle's old slot weight, so the odds barely moved. Only the item changed:

ChestSaddle chance in Java 1.21.5Chance of 1 to 5 leather in Java 26.3
Monster room (dungeon) chest27.9%25.3%
Desert pyramid chest23.5%22.2%
Ancient city chest16.1%16.5%
Jungle pyramid chest12.9%12.7%
Stronghold altar chest2.5%2.5%

The small shifts come from later edits to those tables, not from the swap: copper horse armor joined the dungeon, desert pyramid, jungle pyramid and stronghold altar tables, and the name tag left the ancient city table, which is why that one went up. Bedrock's leather odds in the same five chests are within a tenth of a point of Java's.

So these chests are not a saddle source any more, but they are not a dead end either. About a quarter of dungeon chests now hold 1 to 5 leather, three on average, which is exactly what one saddle needs. Our stronghold guide has the rest of the altar chest table.

What a saddle goes on

A Minecraft player in a green shirt and blue overalls riding a saddled pink pig across a grassy meadow while holding a carrot on a stick, with a hill topped by pink cherry trees behind them.

Java's list of mobs that can wear a saddle, the game's can_equip_saddle entity tag, has eleven entries. Here is what each one needs before the saddle goes on, and how you steer it after:

MobBefore the saddle goes onSteering
Horse, donkey, muleTame it by riding it until hearts appearYou steer directly
Zombie horseKill or knock off its zombie rider, then tame it by riding; tameable without commands since Mounts of Mayhem (Java 1.21.11, Bedrock 1.21.130)You steer directly
Skeleton horseJava: horses from a skeleton trap are already tame. Bedrock: it cannot wear a saddle and steers without oneYou steer directly
CamelNothing; camels can be ridden as foundYou steer directly
Camel huskNothing, once both its riders, the husk and the parched, are goneYou steer directly
PigAdults onlyCarrot on a stick (fishing rod + carrot)
StriderAdults onlyWarped fungus on a stick (fishing rod + warped fungus)
NautilusTame it with pufferfish, a 1-in-3 chance per fish; adults onlyYou steer directly
Zombie nautilusThe same pufferfish taming, once its drowned rider is goneYou steer directly

Pigs and striders are the two that will carry you without going where you point; the stick in your hand does the steering.

A saddled strider, a red Minecraft Nether mob with an orange saddle on its back, standing in a small lava pool cut into a netherrack floor beside a patch of stone bricks.

Four mobs look like they should take one and do not:

  • Llamas and trader llamas take a carpet and a chest, and you cannot steer one. Our horses and mounts guide covers llama caravans.
  • The happy ghast takes a harness, not a saddle; the happy ghast guide has the recipe.
  • The ravager, as above, wears a saddle on its texture only.

For how fast each mount runs, how to breed better horses and how taming actually works, the horses and mounts guide, the taming and breeding guide and the nautilus guide take it from here. The zombie horsemen and camel husk jockeys that bring the two undead mounts to you are in our spear guide.

Putting a saddle on and getting it back

On. Use the saddle on the mob, or open the mob's inventory (sneak and use it, or press your inventory key while riding) and drop the saddle into the saddle slot. Pigs and striders have no inventory, so by hand it is use-on-mob only. A dispenser loaded with saddles can also saddle a mob standing in front of it.

Off. This is the other half of the 1.21.6 change. Shears now remove a saddle, along with horse armor, harnesses and llama carpets. Mojang's changelogs for both editions list the limits:

  • It does not work while the mob has a rider.
  • It does not work while you are sneaking. On mobs with an inventory, sneak-use opens the inventory instead.
  • It does not work on a ravager.
  • A dispenser holding shears snips leads, but it will not strip saddles or other gear.

For pigs and striders, which have no inventory, shears are the only way to get the saddle back without killing the mob, per the Minecraft Wiki. On a horse wearing armor as well, the first snip takes the armor and the second takes the saddle, per the Minecraft Wiki. And a saddled mob that dies drops its saddle.

One quirk deletes a saddle outright. On Java, a saddled pig struck by lightning turns into a zombified piglin, and the saddle is deleted rather than dropped. The bug report, MC-304420, is still open. If you keep a saddled pig, keep it under a roof.

Java vs Bedrock: the delta list

The recipe and most of the chest odds match. The differences:

Java 26.3Bedrock 26.50
Master leatherworkerAlways sells the saddleSells it half the time
Ravager dropEvery deathPlayer kills only
Abandoned camp common chest1 saddle per roll1 or 2 saddles per roll
Bastion hoglin stable chest12.0%13.6%
Fishing0.83%, open water only0.81%, no open-water rule
Skeleton horseNeeds a saddle to steerCannot wear one; steers without
Saddled striders1 in 30 adults, with a zombified piglin rider2 in 100 spawns, riderless (MCPE-236161, open)

Quick Action Checklist

  • Craft it: one leather on top, then leather, iron ingot, leather in the row below, on a crafting table.
  • Count cows, not chests: about three cows' worth of leather, or twelve rabbit hide, plus one iron ingot.
  • Open Nether fortress and abandoned camp chests if you want a free one: 33.3% and 27.5% per chest.
  • Stop looting dungeons, desert and jungle pyramids, ancient cities and stronghold altars for saddles. They roll 1 to 5 leather now.
  • Buy from a master leatherworker for 6 emeralds if leather is the bottleneck: every master on Java, half of them on Bedrock.
  • Kill ravagers in raids: one saddle each on Java, every time.
  • Prep the mount first: tame horses, zombie horses and nautiluses; saddle only adult pigs, striders and nautiluses; bring the carrot or warped fungus on a stick.
  • Take it back with shears, not while someone is riding and not while you are sneaking.
  • On Java, keep saddled pigs out of thunderstorms. Lightning deletes the saddle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you make a saddle in Minecraft?
A Minecraft saddle is crafted from 3 leather and 1 iron ingot on a crafting table: one leather in the middle of a row, then leather, iron ingot and leather across the row beneath it. The recipe is three slots wide, so it does not fit the 2x2 inventory grid. Saddles became craftable on June 17, 2025, in Java Edition 1.21.6 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.90 (the Chase the Skies drop), and one craft makes one saddle.
Can you craft a saddle in Minecraft Bedrock Edition?
Yes. Minecraft Bedrock Edition added the same saddle recipe as Java, 3 leather and 1 iron ingot, in version 1.21.90 on June 17, 2025. Before that, saddles had no crafting recipe on any edition and could only be found in chests, fished up, bought from a master leatherworker or taken from mobs such as ravagers.
Where do you find saddles in Minecraft?
Besides crafting, Minecraft saddles generate in Nether fortress chests (33.3% per chest), abandoned camp common chests (27.5%), village tannery chests (17.3%), village weaponsmith chests (14.4%), End city chests (12.7%), bastion hoglin stable chests (12.0% on Java, 13.6% on Bedrock) and savanna village house chests (11.3%). Ravagers drop one on every death on Java, master leatherworkers sell them for 6 emeralds, and fishing catches one about 0.8% of the time. Dungeon, desert pyramid, jungle pyramid, ancient city and stronghold altar chests no longer contain saddles since Java 1.21.6 and Bedrock 1.21.90.
Which villager sells saddles in Minecraft?
The leatherworker, whose workstation is a cauldron, sells a saddle for 6 emeralds once it reaches master level, the fifth and final trade tier. On Java Edition every master leatherworker offers the saddle, with 12 uses before it restocks. On Bedrock Edition a master leatherworker offers either the saddle or a dyed leather helmet, so about half of them sell saddles.
How do you take a saddle off a horse or pig in Minecraft?
Use shears on the saddled mob. Since Java 1.21.6 and Bedrock 1.21.90, shears remove saddles, horse armor, harnesses and llama carpets, but not while the mob has a rider, not while you are sneaking, and never from a ravager. For pigs and striders, shears are the only way to get the saddle back without killing the mob. For horses, donkeys, mules, camels and nautiluses you can also drag the saddle out of the mob's inventory slot. A horse wearing armor loses the armor to the first snip and the saddle to the second.
What animals can you put a saddle on in Minecraft?
In Minecraft Java Edition, eleven mobs can wear a saddle: horses, donkeys, mules, skeleton horses, zombie horses, camels, camel husks, pigs, striders, nautiluses and zombie nautiluses. Horse-type mobs and nautiluses must be tamed first, and pigs, striders and nautiluses must be adults. Pigs need a carrot on a stick and striders a warped fungus on a stick to steer. On Bedrock Edition, skeleton horses cannot wear a saddle and are steered without one. Llamas take a carpet, the happy ghast takes a harness, and ravagers cannot be saddled.
