Breath of the Wild Hateno House: Every Upgrade and Cost
Buying Link's house in Hateno Village is only the first half of Hylian Homeowner. Bolson then sells 14 additions at 100 rupees each, and nine of them do something. Here is the full 4,400-rupee bill, the conversation that unlocks the renovation menu, and what is worth hanging on the walls.

Bolson's renovation pitch starts at 5,000 rupees and drops to 100 before he finishes the sentence. It is the second fake price he quotes you for the same building, after the 50,000-rupee demolition bill he opens the sale with, and both times the real number is the small one.
Add it all up and the house in Hateno Village costs 4,400 rupees and 30 bundles of wood: 3,000 for the building, then 1,400 for the fourteen additions Bolson sells at 100 apiece. Nine of those fourteen give the house a job: eight wall mounts for your gear, and a bed. The other five are lighting, a door, a name sign, flowers and trees. This guide covers the order the side quest "Hylian Homeowner" unlocks in, what every addition does, what the walls actually hold, and what is worth hanging on them.
What the house costs, start to finish
| Step | Rupees | Also costs | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deliver Bolson's wood | 0 | 30 bundles of wood | Bolson agrees to sell |
| Pay for the house | 3,000 | — | The house, plus one free weapon mount |
| 2 weapon mounts | 200 | — | Three weapon mounts in all |
| 3 bow mounts | 300 | — | Three bow mounts |
| 3 shield mounts | 300 | — | Three shield mounts |
| Bed | 100 | — | Free sleep at home |
| Lighting, door, sign, flowers, trees | 500 | — | Looks |
| Total | 4,400 | 30 wood | Quest complete, plus free furniture |
Every price is from Zelda Wiki's "Hylian Homeowner" and Link's House pages, which put each addition at 100 rupees and the full set at 1,400. If 4,400 rupees is a stretch early on, the rupee farming guide covers the quickest ways to raise it.
Buying it: wood first, then the 3,000
The house sits at the southern end of Hateno Village, across the bridge over Firly Pond, and when you first walk up, Bolson Construction is knocking it down. Ask the crew what they are doing and Karson tells you the last owner went off to the castle to report for service and never came back. Fandom's Zelda wiki reads that line as a hint that the house was Link's own a century ago.

Bolson is round the back. Offer to buy and he quotes 50,000 rupees, then cuts it to 3,000 rupees plus 30 bundles of wood whatever you answer. The quest log, as Zelda Wiki transcribes it, puts the payments in a fixed order: the wood first, and only then the 3,000. Bolson calls the delivery "good-faith wood," his proof that you are serious. The Tarrey Town guide covers the haggle and the quest chain it leads into.
For the thirty bundles, Zelda Wiki's Wood entry says bundles can be found at settlements such as Hateno Village and at stables, and that any bladed weapon or a Remote Bomb will fell a tree; strike or bomb the fallen log and it becomes a bundle.
Pay the 3,000 and Bolson lets you keep the weapon mount already inside, a stock item he says never sold.
Hudson has to leave before Bolson will renovate
The quest log's next step, as Zelda Wiki transcribes it, just says to talk to Bolson. It leaves out that his 100-rupee menu does not open yet. Zelda Wiki's Bolson entry says he offers it after Hudson has left for Akkala, and Hudson's entry says Hudson leaves once you talk to him and wish him luck. That same conversation starts "From the Ground Up," the Tarrey Town quest. So the order is: pay, find Hudson, say goodbye, then go back to Bolson.
Catch Bolson before 9:05 PM. From then, per Zelda Wiki, he and Karson cross the bridge over Firly Pond to sleep in one of the company's model homes.
All 14 additions, and which ones do anything
Every addition is 100 rupees. The names in the first column are the options on Bolson's menu.
| Addition | How many | Cost | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weapon mount | 2 | 200 | Displays one weapon each; three in all with the free one |
| Bow mount | 3 | 300 | Displays one bow each |
| Shield mount | 3 | 300 | Displays one shield each |
| Bed | 1 | 100 | Lets you sleep at home for free |
| Lighting | 1 | 100 | Looks only |
| Door | 1 | 100 | Looks only |
| A sign with my name! | 1 | 100 | Looks only |
| Plant some flowers! | 1 | 100 | Looks only |
| Plant trees! | 1 | 100 | Looks only |
Zelda Wiki describes a use for the mounts and the bed, and none for the other five. That makes it 900 rupees of function and 500 of decoration. The case for buying the five anyway is further down: the quest only completes, and the free furniture only arrives, once you own all fourteen.
Nine slots, three of each

The mounts work the same way for all three gear types, per Zelda Wiki's pages for each:
- Equip it to hang it. Walk up to a mount with the weapon, bow or shield you want to display equipped, and you get the option to put it up.
- Take it back whenever, if you have room. A mounted item can be retrieved at any time, as long as there is space for it in your inventory.
- Not the Master Sword. Try to hang it and the game tells you "You cannot display the Master Sword." Zelda Wiki adds that it can't be dropped or knocked out of your hands either, and it runs out of energy rather than breaking, so it never needed a hook.
Nine slots is a trophy case, not a vault. Zelda Wiki's Hestu table takes the pouches to 19 weapons plus the Master Sword's own slot, 13 bows and 20 shields; the Korok seed guide prices every upgrade. The house adds three to each.
On the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition there is a much bigger stash: the Item Sharing box in Zelda Notes holds up to 100 items, with limits that the Switch 2 Edition guide lays out.
What is worth a hook
With three hooks per type, hang what is hardest to get back.
The Hylian Shield from Hyrule Castle. Granté in Tarrey Town sells a replacement for 3,000 rupees, but per Zelda Wiki only when you do not already have one, and a bought copy never comes with a Weapon Bonus. Only the castle copy can reach 144 guard or 1,160 durability; the shield guide has the full table. Zelda Wiki does not say whether a shield on your wall counts as having one, so do not plan on buying a spare while the original hangs there.
Anything carrying a bonus you want to keep. Zelda Wiki's Weapon Bonus entry says bonuses are handed out at random when an item is first obtained, so a good yellow roll belongs to that one item. The weapon durability guide covers what each bonus is worth.
amiibo-only gear. The Twilight Bow and the Hero's Shield, for two, only come out of amiibo chests, per their Zelda Wiki pages. Scanning the figure again can drop another, but only as a rare roll; the amiibo guide has the odds and the rest of the list.
What does not need a hook is the Champions' arms. All five pieces below have someone who will remake them if they break or are lost for good:
| Champion item | Remade by | What they want |
|---|---|---|
| Great Eagle Bow | Harth | A Swallow Bow, a Diamond, 5 bundles of wood |
| Lightscale Trident | Dento | A Zora Spear, a Diamond, 5 Flint |
| Boulder Breaker | Rohan | A Cobble Crusher, a Diamond, 5 Flint |
| Scimitar of the Seven | Buliara | A Gerudo Scimitar, a Diamond, 5 Flint |
| Daybreaker | Buliara | A Gerudo Shield, a Diamond, 5 Flint |
That table is from the Great Eagle Bow, Lightscale Trident and Boulder Breaker pages on Zelda Wiki, plus Buliara's page for the two Gerudo pieces. The smiths do want the original gone: Harth sends you off to find a Great Eagle Bow that was merely dropped somewhere, and Rohan will not forge a Boulder Breaker that can still be recovered.
The bed is free, and that is all it is
The 100-rupee bed lets you sleep at home without paying. Zelda Wiki's Bed entry groups Link's House with the Great Deku Tree's Navel and the Old Man's Cabin: beds that refill your hearts for free and, for that reason, offer no upgraded bed. So no bonus hearts.
The comparison is the inn a short walk away. Per Zelda Wiki's inn table, the Great Ton Pu Inn in Hateno charges 20 rupees for a regular bed and 40 for a soft one, and inns with a 40-rupee bed give one Extra Heart for it. The home bed saves you the 20. It does not replace the 40 when you want the extra heart.
Buy all fourteen and Bolson throws in furniture

Order the last addition and Bolson calls you a "housing monster," then has Karson bring in furniture you did not pay for. Zelda Wiki lists a dining table, storage boxes under the staircase and a cabinet. That closes "Hylian Homeowner." Neither wiki describes the new pieces doing anything, so treat them as set dressing; compare the empty room above with the renovated one further up.
The sign is worth a closer look if you read Hylian script. Zelda Wiki translates its large line as "Master Link" and the small one as "Presented by Sakurada Builders," Sakurada being Bolson Construction's name in the Japanese version.
The Champions' Ballad picture goes by the bed

If you own The Champions' Ballad, the house gets one more piece. Kass gives you the Picture of the Champions at the end of the main quest "EX The Champions' Ballad," and per Zelda Wiki, once "Hylian Homeowner" is complete, you can hang it on the wall next to your bed. The Champions' Ballad guide covers the quest that earns it.
Hateno, around your front door
The other argument for the house is its neighborhood. From Zelda Wiki's Hateno Village entry and the pages it links:
| Nearby | What it is for | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| Myahm Agana Shrine | The village's shrine, also at the south end, beside Bolson Construction's model homes | — |
| The Great Ton Pu Inn | Beds at 20 and 40 rupees | — |
| East Wind | General store that sells Arrows and Bomb Arrows | Best bows |
| Ventest Clothing Boutique | The Hylian and Soldier's armor sets and the Warm Doublet | Best armor |
| Kochi Dye Shop | Dyes for 20 rupees plus five materials of the matching color | Dye guide |
| Hateno Ancient Tech Lab | Purah's lab, overlooking the village from the east | Compendium guide |
| Horned Statue | On the path to Firly Pond; buys a Heart Container or Stamina Vessel for 100 rupees and sells one back for 120 | Master Sword guide |

What happens to it in Tears of the Kingdom
In the sequel the house is Zelda's. Zelda Wiki says it has become Princess Zelda's House, though Link can still sleep in the bed, and both wikis place the Picture of the Champions there. Zelda Wiki adds a condition: it only hangs if the console holds Breath of the Wild save data from "EX The Champions' Ballad." Link's new place is a Dream Home he builds on a cliff southeast of Tarrey Town, buying the parts from Grantéson in the side quest "Home on Arrange." More on the sequel is on the Tears of the Kingdom hub.

Quick Action Checklist
- Collect 30 bundles of wood first. Bundles turn up at settlements and stables, and any bladed weapon or a Remote Bomb fells a tree.
- Give Bolson the wood, then the 3,000 rupees. The weapon mount inside is free.
- Talk to Hudson and wish him luck. Bolson's renovation menu only opens once Hudson has left for Akkala.
- See Bolson before 9:05 PM, when he leaves to sleep in a model home across Firly Pond.
- Budget 1,400 rupees for all 14 additions at 100 each. The eight mounts and the bed do something; the other five are looks.
- Buy all 14 to finish "Hylian Homeowner" and get the free dining table, storage boxes and cabinet.
- Hang what is hardest to replace: the castle Hylian Shield, gear with a bonus you want, and amiibo-only items. Champion weapons can stay in your pouch, because their smiths remake them.
- Do not bother trying to hang the Master Sword. The game will not let you.
- Hang the Picture of the Champions by the bed once The Champions' Ballad is done.
